Growing Tomatoes In Raised Beds And Containers | Secret Soil Mix
Вставка
- Опубліковано 9 кві 2020
- Our secret tomato soil mix for planting and growing tomatoes in raised beds and containers. The problems is, we have no secrets when it comes to gardening. Your success is our success. Today we'll cover our growing medium and the soil additives we use in our raised bed garden. Garden boxes and containers give gardeners more control over the soil and we take advantage of that. We also use pelleted seeds to ensure good seed to soil contact which improves our germination rate. We'll show you how to space your tomatoes and the correct planting depth. We also want to discuss the positive effects of phosphorus, calcium and magnesium on root crops as well as the down side of nitrogen in the soil.
Items used in this soil mix include: Potting soil, bone meal, Epsom salt, and composted chicken or cow manure. See also: Super Soil

this is the first time hubby and I are doing raised beds. You are so helpful with your tips and tricks to have a successful raised garden!!! Thank you!!!!
Love watching you two in the garden!
Thank you so much Dale !
I am a brand new gardener, waiting for my grow bags to be delivered! So excited!
If you use the super soil for planting bags, I would double up on the perlite, and be prepared to water and feed a little more often...
Truly love your raised gardens. You make it so simple. TFS. Be safe guys.
Thank you ! We try to cut the learning curve for others in hopes of averting frustration that leads to giving up gardening... We already killed our share of plants... Hope we can spare others that... LOL
Thanks for the tips
Pretty cool! Can't wait to see them grow!! Great information !!
Hope they do well over there... More light, but more wind...
Love this planting method! I'm going to try it this year. Love your videos!
Thank you so much Linda... And yes, it will really help, even in bad soil....
I loved it! This was amazing. I can't wait to watch these tomatoes grow! I also have most of the stuff to raise me some tomatoes this way in my bucket. (minus the super soil) Thank you so much. Hope your both safe and God bless
We used just plain ol commercial bagged garden soil in this video to show people anyone can likely do it, even if you cannot make super soil at the time... And a bag of soil goes a LONG way ! Good luck Cathy ! And we hope you have a wonderful weekend !
You guys always put a smile on my face.
Thanks so much Mike ! These are some tough times... We are doing our best to keep it positive....
Awesome guys, thanks for sharing. Have a great weekend, Carl and Dawn homestead
Hope you have a great weekend too ! Stay safe guys !
Very interesting way to plant your tomatoes. I am looking forward to see how these turn out. Thanks for sharing it with us. You guys stay safe and well. God Bless Y'all.
They should do fine... We have planted this way before with good results... Thank you so much ! Hope you have a great weekend !
Oh wow. I didn’t know tomatoes were something you could direct sow. I’m headed out to the garden now to do this! Thank you guys again for sharing. Love the channel!
Oh yes... Direct sowing is a dying art... We love brushing up from time to time...

Thanks so much for your kind words ! So glad it was helpful !
You guys are awesome and keep reminding how unprepared I am even though I've spent 3 years studying. Ugh. I appreciate the reminder though. I need to continue to learn. Thank you!
We are all still learning... Usually be killing a plant or two... ahahaha
Awesome advice as always my dear friends! You guys are so full of knowledge and experience. Please stay safe! Always keep you two in my prayers 🤗

Looks fabulous. Thanks for the tips. I just love your different styles of planters. Happy Easter!
Thanks so much ! They have just sort of added up over the years... LOL
Great canning tomatoes. It will be fun seeing all your hard work pay off with a good harvest this year.
We are sure hoping for a great year with so many more in need... We'll see...
Great method! Cant wait to see them at harvest!
It is a real game changer in poor soils... Then you can turn it in and do it again, improving your overall soil along the way...
loved it and going to have another go at growing veggies this year.
Good luck ! If you run into troubles, you know where to find us !
I love you guys and your cute and helpful videos.
Thank you! I have been stressing about the cost of filling up my new raised beds. This was very helpful. I am new to your channel. Thanks for the straightforward explanation and demonstration.
Ah... No problem... I am glad it helped ! And as you stir it in each year to do it again, your soil will just get richer and richer...
I really like this method, I been doing this every years since you told me about it, great job.
Yeah man... Always puts the plants in the best soil they can be in... No sense working a whole bed unless you just want to...
Looking forward to trying this, thanks!
Hope you enjoy it!
So interesting. Peat helps with blight problem-you are always teaching me something new. Glad you are showing us the Gaia methods. Hope y’all have a great weekend.
Yeah... Peat forms in bogs so it is pretty sterile / inert.... Keeps that soil from bouncing back up on the leaves....
thank you for sharing.....enjoyed the video---stay safe
Hope you have a wonderful weekend Jody !
This is a fantastic idea
Thank you so much ! We learned it many years ago when we were raising 4 kids and needing to garden, but had very poor soil... It really saved us....
Hello Mark and Tina hope y'all are doing well. I've always wanted to plant tomatoes from seed very interesting about this method thank you for sharing. Stay safe sending 🙏 and God's blessings. Much love and big tx hugs from South Tx.
It works really well in poor soil... We use it primarily when we open a new garden bed and have not yet had time to develop the soil....
Yay, great video guys. I've got my tomatoes started from seed also. I have 4 plants about 3 inches tall now. Mine are in pots still. I'll wait til our weather gets a little more stable here. It was 97 Deg on Wednesday and supposed to get down to 38 on Easter Sunday night! Crazy weather. Big storms forecasted for the weekend. Ya'll stay safe.
Y'all stay safe int he storms and have a great weekend !
Another great video!
Thank you so much ! Hoped to give folks some other options in bad soil....
Thanks, that's very helpful. ❤️❤️
Its a great way to grow if you have poor soil ! We love it...
Thanks for the tips!
GOD BLESS and HAPPY EASTER!!!!
Thank you so much for watching ! And you too !
Intresting I didn't know that about peat moss with tomatoes an blithe.
Have a good evening 🌻🌻🌻
Yes... Peat forms in bogs and very rarely contains blight....
Enjoy it
Thank you so much !
This is so cool!, thanks!
Thanks so much for watching ! Appreciate it !
Have a great weekend 🤗
You too Marie !
Thank you great video
Thank you so much for watching !
Enjoyed the video! Tomato sandwiches are amazingly good!!
Agreed ! We love them here too !

Thank you so much for watching ! We appreciate the support !
@@BumbleBeeJunction Thank you for putting out your videos. They are very helpful.
🍅🍅🍅😊 always here❤
Thanks so much ! Have a great weekend !
Great information! I would never have thought of it. Take care and be safe. Many blessing on you and your family. HAPPY EASTER!!!!
Its a great method for people struggling with poor soil... And each year you turn it in and do it again, the overall soil improves...
Loved the video, I will be using peat moss in my garden this year to help with blithe and watering. Thanks bunches guys, really enjoy your videos.
Awesome... And yes, it makes for a great organic mulch to keep weeds down one year, and help with soil structure when you turn it in the second year...
Lookin good.
Thank you so much Jo ! Have a great weekend !
@@BumbleBeeJunction You,too!
I'm really enjoying your videos! Thank you :-)
Thank you so much Karen ! Have a wonderful weekend !
Well I started some black seeded Simpson Lettuce today! I went and got 2 under the bed storage containers (lg. Surface space & not too deep) and now I’m just waiting on the rest of my seeds to get here to put in 5 gal. Buckets.. all ready to move if I can get this house on the market! 😁 have a great weekend
Good ! I am glad you've decided to take the leap and plant in the face of the unknown ! Good luck ! And hope the house sells well for you... I have heard interest rates are dropping, helping bring in more buyers...
Great info 👍👌
Thank you so much for watching ! Hope it helps !
Thanks for showing us regarding...not having great soil and how to do it without paying and harm and a leg to fill your beds. You guys are awesome... Thank you so much 👍💗😁. God bless😇💗
No problem... I know filling a bed is cost prohibitive... Always good to have lower cost alternatives !
I am planting Dan Marzano for the first time this year. I always plant Amish paste but I hear these are delicious. Great video. Thank you.
The San Marzano are super good for sauce tomatoes... We may plant some different for bulk, but the San Marzano adds a really great flavor profile to your sauces...
Thanks for sharing this. Our area used to be the black swamp and our clay is almost cemented. Going for raised beds this year. Your 3x5 beds look to be about the right size to start. Thanks again guys and Happy Easter! Stay safe and healthy ❤❤
In another comment (I dont always see replies because I dont get notices) let me know where you are... I am familiar with the black swamp area... The 3 5 beds are really nice ! You dont always need huge boxes for things...
@@BumbleBeeJunction we are in the corner of northwest Ohio. Over the Michindoh aquifer. The ground is great for filtering rain though lol when we rented the farm from my in laws we had a jungle. The garden had been a working garden for decades. We have now bought this place and it has been lawn since the house was built (80s).
I love Tomato 😍😍😍😍🥰🥰🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅
Yes ! Same here ! We are hoping they hold off through these last couple frosts... But hey... We can always replant... ahahaha
Okay, that was really interesting! I believe I might direct sow some tomato seeds!! Thanks! Be safe!!
Direct seeding is a great skill to keep practiced up on... Its a nice challenge... I can always go buy plants if I need to... LOL
Bumblebee Junction True that!
James and I are getting ready to plant some tomato seeds just like this, hopefully tomorrow if it warms back up. 😁 Cheryl
Don't forget where ya saw it ! ahahahaha Nah, good luck guys !
Sure is a good video. Sure is a good way to plant tomato seeds. Some of my tomato plants is 3 in to 8 in tall may transplant some next week into the garden. Have a great day and weekend.
You definitely got the jump on us, but we have a long growing season, so no real concern...
I bought the same kind of seeds for tomato sauce too. Be Safe Take Care. God Bless
Good choice ! We really enjoy growing them here !
We love buying San Marzano tomatoes. I’ll be watching how they turn out for you guys.
They should be fine... We have done this many times, and we have a long growing season to make up the late start...
I never tried growing tomatoes straight from a seed in the garden. I always put plant in the garden. I might try that this year. Thanks for sharing.
Its just another way of skill building in case one day we had to go back to not relying on greenhouses... Good to stay in practice... LOL
If half of us are showering with Tina are the other half showering with Mark!? Hahaha
Good gawd I hope not... ahahahaha
I bet they’re going to do great!
We sure hope so ! Can never have too many tomatoes... LOL
Bumblebee Junction so true! 😁
I had no idea that peat moss helped with blight that's good to know . I was really hoping to get some gardening done this weekend but our temps at night are still going to be in the 20's all next week so it looks like I won't be doing any planting for a couple more weeks . Thanks again ..Have a good evening .. Hugs , Love and Prayers
So does being diligent about trimming your lower leaves the blight can splash back up on, which also allows for good air flow along the ground, which helps too....
See ..this is pretty cool information . You can wait and plant your tomato seed in your garden and save all the trouble and electric bill . Peppers as well ...they might be a bit later...But its free . Its not to late to plant anything anywhere . Great advice yall
Yup... Agreed ! And growing from seed is a skill that is being lost, and I believe needs rekindled...
got my Cherokee Purples sprouting in solo cups now.. Great strain..
Agreed ! Great for tomato sandwiches !
I like how yall did this. Because I just can't afford all the super soil mix right now.
Right ! We understand it can be a little cost prohibitive, and there are certainly other workable solutions to getting good results...
Loved your video on San Marzono tomatoes. Do you use a little garden for blossom end rot?
I couldn’t help but laugh at shower joke. 🤣. I didn’t know about the peat. Thank y’all for sharing. It was a very nice video. Thanks so much. God bless y’all.
LOL... I considered editting that out, but so far people havent complained too much... hahaha
Bumblebee Junction Tina I thought it was darling. I think most people will to. God bless y’all.
I really want to try this method of planting , I like how you did your amending and digging the holes instead of amending the whole bed, how did these tomatoes do in these beds that year, I know its a two year old video:) thanks guys love your videos they are so helpful and encouraging..
They did really well... I could have staked them better, but that was my fault... They still produced well though... // That planting method is great for poor soil, and it will improve the soil each year as you mix it in to start the next year...
I have a habit of throwing my culled tomatoes on the ground! Now I've got a metric s ton of volunteers everywhere.
I love volunteers... They are usually our best producers, and know exactly when to sprout....
Mrs. Tina have you made any canning videos and Tell Mark is does a great job on making the videos to share with everyone thank you again from Texas
Yes... If you click our logo here in the comment, it will take you to our main page... There, you will find the playlists... We have a Cooking / Canning playlist full of videos we hope you enjoy !
I love planting tomatoes in the garden but I’ve really enjoyed having tomatoes growing all winter in my greenhouse
I would love to have an all season greenhouse !
It’s a nice place to be in the winter
You keep saying “we” but I’d say Tina is doing most of the work. Go, Tina!
LOL... For only 10 plants, it would be a VERY short video if both of us planted... ahahaha Pretty sure she never broke a sweat....
i laughed you said sittin liquid but i heard shittin liquid first lol had to go back a hear it again lol hugssssssss
Shi**in Happens !
I will be trying this this year. Now, to hopefully find some san marzarno tomato seeds. My ground has a lot of clay. Will be getting some of that fertilizer too.
Sounds like you are off to a good start ! Keep us informed !
When we plant tomatoes here in Southeast Tennessee, we have always used transplants. I am excited to see how this turns out. It has to work or they wouldn't have seeds for sale. I'm just wondering how much easier could it be. I've started over 100 plants so far. I've got Marglobe, Roma, Brandywine and Rutgers. My wife purchased me 2 Cherokee Purple plants at our local Amish community market. It's Spring and time to go play in the dirt. Let's all have fun.
We do it just to keep up our direct seeding skills... We have done it about every way imaginable, and sort of come back full circle and wanna brush up on some old school practices....
I've had pretty good luck planting from seeds. I've even had a handful of volunteers each year that pop up from tomatoes falling off the main plant. So far it seems it takes a little extra water than doing transplants to get the baby started. I usually hang a sheet of burlap over my young plants (except high heat plants like peppers or cactuses) so that the sun light is limited.
Hi Mark and Tina! If you get tired of playing around in all the peat or super soil, just head up this way. Bring your snow shovels and help to dig out the Easter Rabbit for Sunday rounds. Stay Safe and Healthy. Happy Gardening! -Bob...
LOL... Get tired of gardening ? LOL We are just getting started... I do have some rabbit stew recipes though...
Just planted bell peppers today. Using milk jugs. Will plant a second batch mid summer. I will move the second batch into my hot tub room as fall moves in.
Sounds like a plan ! Hot tubbing with peppers !
Nice idea!
JO JO IN VT 💕😄
Thanks ! We think planting by seed is a skill being lost, and in need of rekindling !
How big around and deep did you dig those holes for the tomato seed? I noticed you dug them in sets of 5 - 10 holes per bed that are 3 X 5. Great! Thanks for video!
I'd say about 8" wide and 6" deep or so... Deep enough to reach the super soil down beneath....
I would love to try this method! Right now our governor stopped the sale of any garden supplies among other things! Oh well I have a left over bag of soil from last year that I am starting seeds in. I hope the pop up soon. I live in MI so we can’t plant anything outside yet. It’s been four days since I planted my seeds and nothing yet! I am getting worried!
Our friend Heather was talking about this the other day... So sad...
Speaking of Gaia planting have you read the book gaia's Garden by Toby Hemenway? It's a really great book I believe Toby was a student of Bill Mullis ins
I have not read it, but now I am curious... I am sure I will now... ahahaha
Thank you for the 411 on San Marzano Gia planting method and super soil recipe. Look at your wood box after you sprayed, says 411, do you see it?
OK, that is creepy ! LOL Good catch !
" You don't need no fancy greenhouse greenhouse to grow tomatoes".
Me in southern California heat: 😐?
LOL... Thanks for watching !
Great video... is there a peacock near bye? Trying to figure out the background noise
Yes... He lives up on the hill behind our property, but sound carries really well out here in the country... They have several, and they sometimes stop by to visit... LOL
Do you sell peacock eggs?
Loved this video! Most people don't direct plant tomatoes! We used to. GOD bless
The peacock you hear is the neighbors... Though I would love to sell you some of its eggs... ahahhha Or it's head? LOL
@@BumbleBeeJunction Are you friendly with your neighbors? Maybe they would sell some eggs?
I liked the planting method for those tomatoes. I have NO shortage of CLAY! The tomato bed looked like a giant chocolate domino, number 10!
And if you're going to send me a piece of peacock, I'll take a leg! I've heard it's delicious!
Nice seeing your eyes again! And Tina's happy smile!
Here in cali we just put the whole 6 pack from home depot and they grow like crazy.....too many unless your jarring them....give them away all summer long
Nice ! I would love to plant straight outside but with the squirrels would did it all up . The simple soil add is a key this year .
If you have squirrels, go to Amazon and get you a Squirrelinator live trap.... We bait ours with corn and peanuts...
Bumblebee Junction: but then what do you do with the squirrels?? My garden is right next to the trees where their homes are.
I am new to gardening
We got some soil with manure and a little peat moss, but I putted on top peat moss. Will it be ok? I added the tomato’s in it already, there are about 5 inches tall already, but I hope that much peat moss is ok
You should be fine Nati ! I dont know if I mentioned it in the video, but peat moss is slightly acidic, and tomatoes adore acidic soil !
But where did you get that brown soil? (On top of which you out that mix in the holes)
We show how to make it in our Super Soil video that you can search on or it is in our Gardening playlist...
I used your garden soil mix to plant my asperagus over the top of wood split logs that were old and had mushrooms growing on them. They are growing like gangbusters. I sprouted my own seeds the season before in cups in my house. Hopefully within a couple years we will have a good bunch of asperagus. Yay. I left 6 inches in my bed for putting compost thickly this fall.
Sure sounds like you did it right, and that things are set up to go great ! Excellent job ! And thank you for sharing your results !
Wanted to know the most perfect soil chemistry for big tasty tomatoes not just the easy cheapy...
Our original Super Soil video for raised beds (in our gardening playlist) is excellent for rich tasting tomatoes...
How do I spell this method of planting I wanted to look it up and read about it?
We call it Gaia Planting... It has no official name... Gaia means Earth and we are using the earth like a pot, so we just got to calling it that, mostly so we knew what each other was talking about...
Finding that the Gia method works well in containers with river bottom soil which is what I have to work with
Thanks so much for the feedback... We have had several times we had to rely on Gaia planting when opening up new garden space in poor soil, etc... Glad you are having success with it !
I keep trying to grow my tomatoes to be as good as yours. I’m doing a better job this year harvesting a few I just have to keep them producing as long as I can.
Use both nitrogen and phosphorus in equal measure... The nitrogen (blood meal) will keep them in the growth cycle and the phosphorus encourages blooming... Some epsom will help them pick up more nutrients too, which should jolt them back into a growth pattern...
They raised bed looked like a ten domino 😀
LOL... We could do all 6 wood beds differnt and then take a drone shot... ahahaha
@@BumbleBeeJunction sounds like a plan!
Do ya'll have in trouble with tomato blight? Just had to pull 1 up that I planted about a week ago. Using fabric bags this year with a name brand potting mix. Got 5 plants I planted earlier with tomatoes on them. Don't want it to get on them. Been having trouble with blight 4 or 5 years.
You instinct was correct, it is in the soil... The best way around it is to create a barrier between the soil and the lower leaves but trimming the leaves up as high as the plant will allow, and then covering the surface of the dirt so it cannot splash back up onto the plant... Mulch, peat moss, grass clippings... They all work... But yes, you gotta be proactive and get out ahead of it...
How often do you have to fertilize tomatoes?
We follow the feeding schedule Jobes suggests, which usually amounts to weekly... Pick a day of the week to do it so you remain consistent...
What's the best fertilizer for tomatoes?
Jobes Vegetable And Tomato... Red and white bag at the box store... 02-07-04
@@BumbleBeeJunction 👍👍👍☺
what happend to the follow up on how well this system is to grow like that.
We followed them through the season in our weekly garden updates... They did well, and we have grown them that was for several years...
Do you ever start seeds indoors?
We do, and we'll talk some about that soon, but we also like to keep brushed up on direct sowing as a skill set...
Early viewing comment:. Looked like a gopher got into the raised bed.😀
LOL... Gonna make gardening a little difficult.... ahahaha
Catch up time again. Just got power/cable/internet back, from last Thursday nights snow/blow storm. Might try this with some Roma's, once I pull my garlic.
Thanks for sharing.
Mark
Oh, by the way, it's starting look like Johnny's isn't real interested in us "Home Gardeners".
Now commercial orders only until the 28th of April. VERY DISAPPOINTING !!!!!
Oh I think they would be selling seeds and making money if they could... They have always been real good to us in the past...
@@BumbleBeeJunction They can't turn a deaf ear to bread and butter customers, (commercial) but, why say no to home gardener's, and still take "New" commercial orders. We'll see what scraps are left come the 28th, and move forward based on that. Already may have found a new place even closer to home. Check out, "The Maine Potato Lady". Calling them tomorrow. Will let ya know how that goes.
I don’t understand why you would not just take a hoe and mix all the garden soil and peat moss throughout the whole bed instead of making holes full of compacted garden soil.
