      20 years ago there was no such thing as homeless people in New Zealand but then too many foreigners came and destroyed the average person's' ability to own a home. New Zealand incomes can't compete in an international market. To give some idea how bad it is 40% of Auckland our biggest city got displaced over a 5 year period. Our culture is being destroyed by immigration. No such thing as systemic racism, just those who are competent to fit into the system and those who are not. Why did you even come here, we've got enough woke mind virus persons of our own let alone imports. The only saving grace is that it's got so bad people can still leave for Australia in their droves to balance our displacement.

    Most shops closing at six, the slower pace of life, being a bit behind the times, and the isolation are ALL PRO'S to me! This is coming from a Dutch man who immigrated to NZ. Europe and the USA are so hectic and crowded these days. NZ is like stepping back twenty years in time and I love it!!!

    New Zealander here who left for the USA- you nailed it! You shocked me with how accurate you were after living there so short a time! Spot on. The local government needs to get FUNKY!!! Make the CBD alive, like it is in Melbourne, for example.

      To be fair Melbourne has 5m and Auckland got 1.7m. But I think the biggest issue is all the shops are closed, if they were open till later than they are, it would help.

    I enjoyed your comments about the Pros & Cons of living in (Auckland) New Zealand. Yes, your right ....food is very expensive here, I've had to cut back on many things I took for granted due to the recent high cost. Butter for one thing thats expensive & yet we make it here. I have friends living in Queensland, Australia & they buy NZ meat & Butter cheaper there than we pay here in NZ. for the same items...... It doesn't make sense, obviously some one is making a lot of money at the expense of the majority of the population. But, its still a great place to live & I especially love the South Island for its wide open spaces, beautiful southern Alps Mountain range & so many stunning lakes....it truly is a great place to live.

    I'm someone who is currently living in Auckland myself for just over a year at this point (for studies) and I agree with you on many points. But I really want to say that it will get better. Yes, things are behind, but as you mentioned, NZ is essentially in the middle of nowhere. my heart aches when i hear locals wanting to move out because it "sucks" and "everything is expensive" because the more people that can't see the potential in this country, the longer it will take to catch up with the rest of the world. Also I really want to disagree on eating out being cheaper. with $20 i can cook pretty lavish meals for myself for 2-3 days, whereas that's just 1 meal in the CBD.

    • @KatTurner
      @KatTurner  Рік тому +1

      Yes, I suppose you are right about that 😊 p.s. I only meant that restaurants are cheaper here than in the UK, not that eating out is cheaper than eating in! 😘

    This is so interesting! I've often heard that New Zealand is so expensive, but each video I watch, I notice that the prices are comparable to that in the United States! I live in a very popular and rather expensive area in the USA, and some expenses are actually cheaper still in NZ than here!

    We know we're badly ripped off here for food, pharmaceuticals etc, but I think kiwi's don't complain enough and put up with it. Producers (sheep and beef farmers) struggle. No one wants the wool. Especially the Chinese won't pay much for it. It costs you to shear the sheep. One is in deficit getting it done. Anyone that makes things get a hard time and always have.

    I feel like if you want Maori culture (other than in museums) you just need to get out of the big city. I haven't been back since 2003 but there was plenty of Maori culture around when i was there. I think i spent a total of 3 days in Aukland and it was nice but it absolutely is NOT what i think of, when i remember my time there. I lived in Paihia for 3 months while working in Waitangi and got to know my Maori colleagues pretty well. There was also plenty of Maori culture all the way down to Wellington, through Rotorua and Taupo etc. There wasn't as much in the south island but that seems pretty obvious and there was lots of settler history and culture down the bottom (where the Scots were apparently happy to deal with the cold).

      There is crime here, and gun laws are strict. The most commonly reported crime is burglary, car chases, occasional homicide, and family violence, but compared to other countries it's very low. Children have a lot of freedom here, they walk to and from school basically it's a very safe country.

    Hi Kat. I am a kiwi so want to comment on your podcast. Firstly Auckland is not NZ just as London is not England. Shops close at a normal time on a Friday night so the retail workers can relax and get ready to go out rather than stay at wotk hoping you will come in. Our groceries are expensive becuase of the supply chain and problems internationally and yet we save our best lamb for the Brits. Funny eh? Queenstown and Wanaka are gorgeous and the only places in NZ Aucklanders have ever heard of so it's not surprising you mentioned them. They are so so expensive in comparison with other places. Sorry that you found NZ a bit backward and so far from Europe, you will be home soon so fill your boots.

    I wasn’t offended by the cons. Yes, we have to travel miles to get anywhere, but that’s good for earning points or frequent flyer miles.
    You are absolutely right about online ordering taking ages. I bought a pair of earphones from the urbanears collective and it was delivered in 4 days from Sweden 🇸🇪. I sent something from Whanganui to Invercargill with NZ Post and it took 7 days. Now you’re probably wondering why I didn’t drop ship the order from Sweden to Incercargill. Me too. I do now.

As I said before they received benefits And accommodation. If they are living on the sttreets they c(oose to be their out of choice not lack of resources.

    To sum up, NZ is overatted , overpriced and very isolated islands in the middle of nowhere. Accordingly, that is the reason why everything is outdated.
    But the most shocking thing I have experienced here is lovely people whom I have found very passive aggressive. And one more thing you should havd mentioned is bloody weather. You may think the weather is ok compared to wherever you are from the UK...but as a person who lived in cities and countries where weather is gorgeous Mediterranean one, the weather in NZ sucks immensely. 😅

    Maori culture and reo (language) was supressed since British colonisation in the 1850s along with all the Maori land and resources stolen. Its only recently theres been a huge push for the revitalization of te ao Maori culture and traditions and the majority of Kiwis love our culture today but unfortunately the damage of the past has been done, will take generations to overcome if ever as seen in the huge inequalities in NZ society til this day so thats probably why you see lots of Maori homeless on the streets and nowhere in your work place.
