- A journey through hell: walking the migrant route through the Darién gap
The Darién gap is a stretch of land between Colombia and Panama - an unavoidable section of the route from South America to Central America that thousands of migrants a week take, as they travel up to the Mexico / United States border.

It’s been called ‘hell on Earth’ because of its dense and dangerous jungle. There are no roads, just treacherous paths, rivers that can wash you away, vast swamps, steep mountains and deadly animals. And it’s lawless - with cartels and kidnappers taking advantage of the vulnerable migrants.
The fittest take days to cross, the feeble can table weeks and many do not make it at all.
And despite all of this, record numbers are still crossing.
Our Latin America correspondent Guillermo Galdos travelled that most dangerous of human trails - and in today’s episode of The Fourcast, he speaks about his journey, the people he met along the way.

Thank you Guillermo for taking this journey to be able to report to us.
TY for taking this Journey. It must have Broken your Heart over and over again seeing people not be able to carry on, people swept into rivers, etc. I want badly to go there, with any $$ I have in savings and could scrounge up, to help people through the jungle. Im scared I would jump into water to save people and Id probably just drown myself as well. That trip must make you feel " hard" inside. God Bless you my friend my brother. Peace from Big Jim New Hampshire USA aka Boston Strong
shocking... what a choice these poor people are making: reminds me how lucky we are to live in cosy homes and sleep at night.
True 😢We must count our blessings 🙏
From India, accidentally learn about Darien Gap and searched internet and found this post. First of all it is amazing post. second I never knew migration is a business . horrible and shocking . Third it is the example of human suffering . We also had similar experience after independence in 1947 where hindu migration took place in millions from East Pakistan to India and from West Pakistan also. My heart melt to see the suffering of human soul in the hands of few powerful people in the earth . I pray for peace and happiness for all humanity
Thank you so mucj for reporting this ! I didn't know how dangerous it was for the migrants and how cold hearted for the pananamian police to say that that lady was gonna make it. They just didnt want to go get her 😢I hope francesca made it❤
I first listened to this on the podcast, my heart was aching listening. Coming back months later watching it humans are really failing humans
Thanks for your videos on this. bald and bankrupt just did the Venezuela caravan to the usa border. His Darien gap was similiar to yours. Lots of Venezuelan people.
Just read about the Darien Gap on NPR News.
Thank you Guillermo and Channel 4 News for this excellent report.
Very sad that human beings are treated so terribly.
…by other humans. Thats the whole thing, the beginning, middle and end. 🌎
I have been trying to legally bring my country to the U.S. for years now and we even paid fees to do this. This is insane! This is promoting lawlessness!
Correct. It is absolutely sickening that these people are allowed to pollute this beautiful jungle
Especially since we’re facing population decline in several cities like Shreveport and Toledo! Laying off teachers for lack of children in Indianapolis and can’t find a deck builder or Electric in my town without months waitlist while vacant brick homes await families in Tulsa and St Louis
It’s a really tough journey for these desperate people. I would also do it if I was in the same position. Life must be very challenging for these people.
We need tough people here in the US! Hope you settle here in Tulsa! If you’re an Electrician or Deck builder hurry there’s a ridiculous waitlist for house repairs in my city
Texas governor is listening and loading up the buses now. 🚌 🚌 🚌
🙏
It's like going on crusade but US is no hollyland for sure.
Being taken care of for the next 5 years without any worry while waiting for their asylum hearing. 1,500 immigrants per day claim asylum in the US!
I recently heard they are Building Roads through the Darien Gap now ?? To perhaps not only carry people to walk BUT also so Tanks etc will be able to come through?? Came from very high up reliable sources..
A sophisticated bridge as well. ua-cam.com/video/TL0kAiIbw0U/v-deo.html&pp=ygUaYnVpbGRpbmcgYnJpZGdlIGRhcmllbiBnYXA%3D
Yes! Now I Understand why the rumors of encouraging people to travel illegal to USA from Colombia is a BUSINESS! I have friends in Colombia that are telling me that travel to USA on bare food is not too bad and anybody can do it. I am in shock when i see so many people that they live in Colombia, have a job in Colombia and still thinking in cross the border. It's insane! I told them don't do it! Who ever is behind this is making the business $$
SOME FRIENDLY AMERICANS ARE WAITING FOR YOUR ARRIVAL.
But what would Darien think?
I understand why migrants want to move to the USA. I don’t understand why people cannot apply legally to enter the United States of America. My family came here fro Syria legally 100 years ago. They came here to work and raise my family safely and to contribute to the the United States not come here illegally expecting welfare and freebies that USA citizens cannot get. Come to the USA legally!
I’m sure these people are not making the decision to cross the jungle lightly, they must all have good reason
Did you say 100 years?
He is lying!
I think you’re really out of touch with what’s going on. To become a US citizen takes about 10 years
It’s a very different world to the one that your family came to USA
So how many migrants THIS “journalist” took in to his home?!
Only the hot ones
@koostory1631, how many migrants YOU taken into YOUR home?! You are quite a kook, I see.
--Æ.
I have NO empathy for those trying to invade our lands.
Agreed fully from Trinidad & Tobago sir. Why can these people not settle in Colombia??
I do not support these people in this journey for polluting the place so much. I wish them the worst and hope they are unsuccessful
We don't use accents in the English language. Please learn to spell properly
We do with foreign nouns, smart guy.
🤡😂
@@django3422 Then those are foreign words. NOT British ones
@@guff9567 It took you 7 months to work that out, after I explicitly said they were FOREIGN nouns?
@@django3422 then write "Darian", not "dàrïénnë"
