    I have KBG also. However, for the last two years in October, I aerated and overseeded with TTTF from GCI and now notice a major difference during the warmer months. It’s the end of July and the grass is dark green. I did fertilize with Protene 6-0-0 about 6 weeks ago. I also apply Strobe 2L and Propiconazole once every 27 days starting at the beginning of May to prevent fungus from taking over my lawn.

      Hi thanks for watching my video! I usually put down some soil (1/2 sand, 1/2 compost) to cover the seeds and then sometimes I will cover the seed with peat moss (not necessary but helps). Then I put down fertilizer and water it well for the first 2 weeks. You need soil contact to get the best germination from the seeds. Thanks Ben. Yes I have done the tuna can measuring method and I'm getting at least 1 inch to all of my lawn each week. The middle dry area probably gets even more than that. I'm pretty sure it's due to the thatch layer and that KBG roots don't go very deep. I read that the TTTF roots can go down several feet so I hope that solves the problem.

    • @yardbuddha
      @yardbuddha  2 роки тому +2

      Thanks for the question. I normally bring it down to 2 1/2 inches before dethatching. You don't want to cut it too short (scalp it) or it will hurt the grass. I usually cut my grass at 3 1/2 inches so its about and inch shorter than normal. Cutting it shorter also allows the seed to get down to the dirt easier.

    • @cnsutton1983
      @cnsutton1983 2 роки тому +1

      @@yardbuddha I have found that you can actually bring it down shorter than 2.5”. You’re not particularly going to hurt but rather shock your plant. Cutting it lower is is better so you can get more of the debris up and out and also create space for the seed, air and nutrients when overseeding. I like how your lawn came out though! Great work!

I bought a couple hundred pounds of Pete's GCI "spreader TTTF" and I'm putting it down within 10 days. • @Drewg351
      @Drewg351 Рік тому

      @@yardbuddha, because I'm doing a renovation, not overseeding, it calls for 8 - 10 pounds of TTTF per 1, 000 Sq ft. I have 15,000 Sq ft to seed. I bought a little extra (it lasts several years) just in case the Minnesota weather turns cold early, which can happen, and I need to overseed in the spring. This exact scenario happened to me 4 years ago when I put down the KBG. Most did not germinate prior to it snowing and getting very cold quickly. I had to put more seed down in the Spring and luckily it turned out fantastic after being so thoroughly disappointed in fall.
      TTTF compared to KBG requires a lot more pounds per 1,000 Sq ft. KBG is more like 3 - 4 pounds per 1,000 Sq ft.
      We'll see how it goes. I'm hoping I love this Spreader TTTF. 🤞🤞

      That's a lot of yard. My yard is only 4,500 sq ft. I live in Spokane, WA and we get about 4-6 feet of snow each year so I understand some of your issues. It goes from hot in August to cool in Sep and Oct so I have a small Fall reseeding window. I actually like to reseed in Spring better here because I can fix all the snow damage and have more time for the seed to germinate before Summer. We are at the mercy of Mother Nature. You should do a video on your yard.

    • @Drewg351
      @Drewg351 Рік тому

      @@yardbuddha, I was reading that with TTTF you can do a renovation in either Spring or Fall whereas KBG they recommend fall (preferably). Here in Minnesota, the weather has changed a lot from even just a decade or two ago. The summer's are hotter and much, much dryer. That's my main reason for switching to TTTF. My water bills are like $800.00 a quarter and my KBG still goes mostly dormant. The only time my KBG looks incredible is Spring. I want a nice lawn all summer that won't bankrupt me paying for water. The fall in Minnesota is always a crap shoot. We could have a very mild fall, like last year (which I'm praying for again), or we could turn bitter cold by late September and have snow in early October. When I did my KBG, that's exactly what happened. Turned bitter cold early with snow and my fall renovation of 100% KBG never Germinated. I wish I was seeding TODAY, but I got a late start, so I'm waiting another week for the Roundup to kill everything so I can trim, till, level, and put down 25 yards of screened top soil. I'm hoping to seed no later than September 15th and hoping I get 30+ days of decent 60 degree temps 🤞🤞.
      I'll definitely take pictures throughout the renovation, but I'm not good at making videos, and I work for the BNSF Railway so my schedule is totally unpredictable. I'm on call 24/7/365 and work an average of 270 hours a month, and that doesn't include the time I'm in hotels 3 - 5 times a week. So I just don't have time to record videos, edit, etc..... I wish I did because I'm OCD and I know this is going to come out really nice. Just a question of whether it'll be looking good this fall or next spring. All depends on Mother Nature.
      Lastly, thank you for responding and for taking your time to make your videos. I'm certain I'm speaking for lots of people when I say it really is helpful. Sorry to be so long winded. Hope I didn't take up too much of your time. Thank you again !!!!

    What is your watering schedule like? I think I have the same thatch problem from overwatering. Is it possible to still develop a deep root system from a shallow one?

    • @yardbuddha
      @yardbuddha  Рік тому +1

      I am watering 3 times a week with 1/2 inch each time during the Summer. In Spring and Fall (or below 80 degrees) I cut that back to 2 times a week at 1/2 inch. See my Summer lawn update if you haven't yet: ua-cam.com/video/9m_3lEwVVZo/v-deo.html. KBG has a shallower root system normally and that is why I'm doing TTTF which has a deeper one. Core aerating, scarifying, good watering and minimal fertilization helps reduce thatch but it is a long process and takes time.

      Sorry you will need to buy more seed. Tall fescue is typically a bunch forming grass that doesn't spread through rhizomes like Kentucky blue grass does. However there are new strains of TF called RTF (rhizomatous tall fescue) that do spread a little but they are expensive.

    • @yardbuddha
      @yardbuddha  Рік тому

      No I haven't noticed it "clumping" compared to the existing grass in my lawn. If you dethatch evenly it should be mixed in well when it germinates. Just know that it will take many rounds of overseeding to make TTTF the dominate strain in your grass. KBG is usually the bully in the yard and spreads quickly into bare spots. I estimate my lawn is still 60% KBG after 2 overseedings of TTTF.

    Awesome job, Man! I have a (Scott's) mix of KBG, PR, and Fescue. I planted this lawn about 6 years ago, and the past couple of years, I've NOT been happy with it's performance (prone to fungus, checks out during the Summer, loses its color, etc.). I'm in northern VT. My lawn is very thick. I LOVE the look of that TT tall fescue. Do you think that if I dethatched with my Sun Joe that I could get enough seed-to-soil contact for successful germination? Or, do you recommend that I use the scarifier attachment instead? Or, a combination of both? Since my current lawn is relatively thick, do you think that my Sun Joe can thin it out enough to allow the tall fescue to gradually be the dominant species? Thanks for your recommendations! I'm planning my reno for late August.......

    Hey Buddha, A year later....how's the TTTF holding up and intermingling with your KBG, fescue and rye? I was planning an overseed last Fall, but never got to it. I have the same blend as you, and I'm hesitant to pull the trigger on the TTTF, only because I'm concerned about the clumping aspect. Are you having any issues with that? Is it a fine-bladed grass type that will blend in with my current mix? I, too have a thatch issue, so I plan to use my Sun Joe to dethatch as the preparation for this. Do you recommend the scarifier blades over the tines? Any other tips are appreciated. Thanks in advance....

      @yardbuddha  11 місяців тому

      Hey Joe. I'll be honest my front yard does look a bit clumpy now but it has been in the high 90's for almost a month so the KBG has been struggling and tall fescue seems ok. I used the SunJoe twice - once with the tines this Spring (see this video if you haven't already ua-cam.com/video/Pk_EP6DBbDY/v-deo.html) and then I used the scarifier later in Spring and overseeded. Once the temp goes down to the 80's in Fall everything looks great. I'm experimenting with RTF (rhizomatous tall fescue) on my back yard which is a spreading TTTF and will have a video out soon.

      Normal tall fescue usually has a thicker blade than TTTF. I think Pennington makes one with TTTF but I don't think Scotts does. I've found that you usually get what you pay for. If you want the most economical TTTF Pennington Kentucky 31 works but it does still have thicker blades and is coarser in texture.

    • @yardbuddha

      If you mow the grass tall 3 - 3 1/2 inches and have thick grass it prevents weeds from starting. I do spot spray weeds with Weed B Gone occasionally but don't apply anything else. We don't really have ant problems where we live it gets cold during the winter which tends to kill them off.

      Yes Jay you can but I wouldn't recommend it. You will get maybe 10% germination rate so you will be wasting a lot of seed. I just bought a electric dethatcher/scarifier for $179 and will be posting a video next week on how I use it to overseed. It is the SunJoe AJ805e and if you look it up it works great for preparing your lawn for seed. Preparation of the soil will get you a much greater germination rate.
