The village has obviously shrunk away from the Church, probably in the field at the small gate overlooking the dale. Maybe one of those places devastated by the Black Death.
Churches were usually at the heart of their communities in olden times, & you can see it has been long used by the height of the graveyard above the door level, indicating the many burials over the centuries raising the ground all about the building. Originally there would have been no steps down, the door would have been at ground level. A very beautiful & typical village church. The first painted Coat of Arms is Royal one, showing loyalty to the Hanoverian Kings, which all Churches had to display from the 18th century. The others look like local landowner family arms, rather than military ones. Again such things are quite common. There appears to be a churchyard cross outside the porch, again pretty normal, sometimes these were used as market places, churches being trusted places to trade, as well as secure places to keep valuables. Apart from a possible Manor House the Church would usually be the strongest, therefore safest, place for people to gather in times of trouble, during the many wars etc.

The current village of Downholme is a few hundred yards down the road, just off the other side.
The church probably served a farming community in times of yore.
@4:30 It's the Coat of Arms of the United Kingdom. I believe rare is the parish Church that doesn't display it.

@julianguffogg Once you notice and realise how political the Church is and was, it kinda takes the gloss off the Holy aspect.
These days it's all rainbow flags and BLM. Also, political.
How do you define “best churches”?
I didn't.
When I researched.it, apparently it was in the 1000 best churches.
Personally, I just like the location.
