It could be a private purchase he took when deployed or sold at the PX for sale to soldiers heading for Vietnam. I would search for the name of the company on the sheath for its history.

@@HuntingDownHistory I had a look at Wikipedia's list of rebellions and insurgencies but nothing jumped out at me except maybe Colombia 1964 to present day. The wiki article looks pretty shoddy, claiming that Mao Zedong led the cultural revolution in 1977! Further research required... :D
