    1) By "Painfully average, you adjust no abilities", they mean roll 3d6 for each ability in order (Agility, Presence, Strength, Toughness). If you look at the other classes, you'll see some of their ability rolls have a bonus or penalty on the specific ability rolls. Wretched Royalty have no modifiers on their rolls--they just roll 3d6 for each of the four abilities.
    2) After you roll the abilities, you note the modifier and then throw away the roll. Your ability score IS your modifier. You discard the actual roll---it is not used for anything other than deriving your modifiers (which are now your ability scores).
    3) Your Hit Points is your Toughness modifier (as #2 above) + the die roll (d6 in the case of the Wretched Royalty). So if you had a 0 Toughness and rolled a 3 on d6, you would only have 3 HP

Thank you!! I had a feeling I was making a mistake with point one but couldn’t see what! As it turned out here at least it didn’t matter. I did actually do the rolls (as you saw if you watched the vid and noted them down so I can reconstruct it if I go back to her).
On point two, yes I did do that but in point 3 I did not, making my magic monkey decision all the better when I readjust given my terrible toughness roll.
      THANK YOU for these notes.

The description is very sparse in character creation, it's really my only gripe.

When using the "Ask the Stars" table, remember to use 2d12; don't just read across the same d12 roll. See instructions: "Getting Inspiration: Roll 2d12 and consult the Symbols and Position columns. Inspiration could be symbolic or literal. The Cage might represent Protection or Obligation or just a physical cage.
Use this to create characters and give them descriptive Strengths and Weaknesses until they feel interesting. This method also generates locations, events, and anything else you need."

5:37 This is one of my biggest, perhaps biggest overall, complaint. I had to read the book twice before I even figured out what the core mechanic was. As an art project, it's great. As a rulebook that you'd want to use for reference (as you should with a _rulebook_) it kind of fails.

It's probably meant more for an experienced gamer, who is already aware of the basic rules of most RPGs. This game (and book) is all about atmosphere, and I think that is where it excels.

It doesn't fail, it's just written for experienced gamers. Sure it leans heavily on style, but I for one am damned sick of how many RPG core books open with pages-worth of explanation of what an RPG is lmao

@@MrYancakes I do agree there... not sure why so many people feel the need to waste print real estate on sections called "what is an RPG?" Do board game rules come with a section called "What is a board game?"

Thank you for sharing! I bought this with the intention of making a modular dungeon "board game" and playing solo. Lol I was going to follow the heroquest layout and fill it in with m.b. style and attempt to run thru it solo :) I picked out a bunch of metal minis off Ebay that fit the bill

Loving the video. I cannot finish watching it until I finish my own solo play, as I randomly rolled Wretched Royalty with the Blade of Your Ancestors. Only 1 HP though, so I shan't be long. I love this game. The unapologetic, uncensored and downright bizarre nature of the game is ironically, a breath of life into the whole RPG thing for me at least. The line between being a brutal and over-the-top world without taking itself too serious and throwing unecessary crunchiness out the window while still keeping an OSR vibe just does it for me. Wish i could get a printed copy of Feretory and Heretic though.

I recently played this in PBF. Setting is really cool, and there's lots of flavor in the system. Very deadly though. We all died on our intro adventure (and one player died so early he got to make a second character).
I think the rules are written assuming the player already knows it's an OSR style game, but they never call it an OSR game. If you went in with the mindset of a typical D20 system, the rules probably would have made more sense, but they shouldn't write the rules that way. They should have used clearer language so MB is easier to play on its own, especially for new players who haven't been playing for 30+ years.
I love the character stand, by the way. A great way to give your character more presence when they're not a mini on a battlemat.

Thanks, I appreciate that. I don't have a lot of minis so need to be creative when I can...
yes, I do think the rules are written with a lot of assumptions (and I failed to note that in my vid).
