"Persons attempting to find a motive in this narrative will be prosecuted; persons attempting to find a moral in it will be banished; persons attempting to find a plot in it will be shot."
Mark Twain, "Notice" to "Adventures of Huckleberry Finn"
Thank you. I loved your review of the Barlow. My Dad gave me a Barlow at a very early age and I have had one almost every day of my life. I will be 70 years old on my next birthday. This review made my day.
I agree this is one of the best Knife reviews I have ever watched. I went out and bought a couple of Barlows because of this review.
Absolutely fantastic video. The weaving of the music, the images, the written page, the illustrations, and your flawless (no apology necessary for the accent) readings of Twain, brought new appreciation for Huck and Tom's adventures. The historical perspective of the Barlow knife, was just icing on the cake.
I was so impressed with your video about the Black Cat knife that I've found myself looking at others, all of which are superb, but I really loved this one, it was fantastic.
Thank you! My video style has changed over the years. How do you like my newer videos?
I have to admit I never really paid attention to the dates of upload until you mentioned it, but I can see you have changed the visual style a little, but you have a consistent quality. I don't collect knives myself, but I think they are fascinating and very probably mankind's first true invention, and I really love history and your cultural references and the considerable amount of detective work you put into your chosen subject. I know as a collector knives are your thing, and they make an excellent 'McGuffin', but I strongly suspect you would have a knack for making anything you are interested in interesting. Brilliant work, Stefan! It's an addictive channel.
Thank you for your kind words!
I realise you made this video a long time ago, but I’ve only just watched it. I really enjoyed it and it’s inspired me to re-read Tom and Huck’s adventures. I last read them nearly 40 years ago, but I carry a Sheffield made, Taylor’s Eye Witness Barlow every day.
Thank you very much for your kind words! I'm happy my video was able to bring back some boyhood memories.
Once again you have put out a top notch knife review. I could sit and listen to you talk about knives all day long. You include such interesting and relevant information into your reviews it is like a one stop shop! Thank you for all of your hard work and thank you for such a cool review on the Case Barlow knife.
Just came across your channel the other day, subscribed, and now find myself watching each video in turn. This one in particular captured my interest. What a wonderful job of research, narration, and video editing. Keep up the good work!
It's my impression that when Mark Twain refers to the "loafers" whittling with their barlow knives, he's commenting on the mens' commonness. In my experience, Barlow knives were general-purpose knives suitable only for children or adolescents. By adulthood, most people acquired one or more specialized knives, depending on their occupations. By mentioning that these grown men were (still) using barlow knives, Twain is subtly commenting on their prospects in life. Of course, I could be wrong.
this might be the greatest knife review of all time. bravo!
Thank you!
Спасибо за видео! Приключения Тома Сойера одна из любимых книг детства! И хотя я родился и вырос в СССР, но все мальчишки знали и читали эту книгу. Но о ноже Barlow я узнал так подробно впервые!
Thanks for watching!
I've watched this video many times, your accent reminds me of my Grandfather, he also had a great love for both Mark Twain, and the Barlow knife, which is in my very own knife collection to this day, the knife being some 60 plus years old,, He migrated with my father from East Berlin to the US in 1958, but he never lost his accent,
Thanks for sharing this story! Which brand is your grandfather's Barlow knife?
@@StefanSchmalhaus It was an ulster made in USA, I beilieve it was purchased around 1960's it along with his pocket watch were always in his pockets if he wasn't sleeping or taking a bath, he used to say those were the only times a man should be without either Item,
Great content! That very cool that you integrated the knife with the story’s!!!!!! I loved every minute of it! Thank you
Always enjoy your reviews, this time with a wonderful history lesson as well. Very well done, researched and thoroughly enjoyable. I'm looking up the audiobooks now. Thanks for that. Great, great video.
I loved this review and started collecting more Barlow knives after watching it
Thanks for watching!
I just can't tell you how much i enjoy your videos and i love the history
The musician who opens with "Shady Grove" on this most informative video, Doc Watson, passed away today. RIP, Doc.
I enjoyed your video although I didn't get a Barlow Knife when I was growing up. My first folding knife I believe was a Buck 110 lockback.
Charming video - from the Doc Watson to the Mark Twain. Very nicely done.
With love for Doc and Merle.
have this very knife in my pocket now, grew up with Barlow's, just want to share my appreciation to your knife videos, very classy, keep up the great work....sehr gut
I was LOLing at the description before I even watched.
'The Famous Brothers' wrote a song all about a knife, appropriately titled 'Swiss Army Knife'. I used a part of the song in my Vic Solo review.
I couldn't help but watch the whole vid. Your vids are always so interesting. A couple years ago I saw Hal Holbrook in 'Mark Twain Tonight!' with my grandfather. It was pretty cool to see such an impersonator.
mark twain was a genius. he had such a sense of humor. you can see it in his novels. my first knife was a plastic handled schrade i think with two blades. a clip point and a pen blade. i broke the tip off the main blade in the basement wall practicing my throwing skills. i think my brother still has it. i hope so anyway. ill get another one day.
Thank you very much for your kind words!
excellent video....informative and entertaining...you combined two of my favorite "things"...knives and Mark Twain.....i have read both of those books many times and never recall the Barlow knife....i'll pay closer attention through the next read
Thank you for your very kind words!
This is one of the best Barlow videos i've seen!!
@tattooraptor Thank you very much for your very kind words! And thanks for letting me know that my video inspired you in terms of knives and books.
Geat video, just amazing information! I have an old Case Barlo from the 80's. it also has stag handels, but they're smooth. it has three blades, and i love it! Thanks for an excelent video!
Awesome video, enjoyed it much! Barlows are My favorite pattern 👍
Thanks for watching!
The first knife I was allowed to purchase with my own money was an Imperial Barlow. The local hardware store sold them next to the cash register for $1.99. The clip point seemed especially wicked and designed for stabbing.
I was stabbing a tree trunk when the main blade snapped shut on my index finger. I probably should have had stitches, but trip to the doctor would certainly have nixed my knife privileges. So we kids patched it up with tape and played it cool until it healed. Nobody noticed
I’ve still got a scar on my palm from my first knife shutting on it. Taped it up then superglued it back together at the house. Nobody noticed mine either. Time is a flat circle I suppose.
Herr Professor Doktor Schmalhaus: you've outdone yourself on this video. I've run out of superlatives!
Another excellent video! I appreciate the background you provide in your videos, it really sets you apart from others here.
What a very wonderful video!! Thank you!!!!
Thanks for watching!
GREAT video and 2 of my favorite books thanks. Great song from Mr.Doc Watson
Thank you, sir, for your excellent, in-depth, well-made and thoughtful reviews. Your video here inspired me to purchase not only a Case Barlow, but also a copy of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, and begin reading it immediately. My Barlow is on the same frame as yours, with the secondary pen blade and jigged bone handles. Thank you again, and keep the reviews coming!
I went to one of the last concerts by Doc Watson a true southern gentleman his passing was sad. I received as most boys at that 6 or -so a pocket knife. I had a Kabar trapper my buddy a Barlow those some matches and a .22 rifle we were ready for anything mostly fun
The stag handle is awesome! Case just reissued the Barlow this year (2019), and I ordered one in the yellow synthetic handle--which I like, but I don't think it equals the stag. The Barlow I ordered has two blades, the clip and a small pen blade.
Wunderbar Herr Stschmalhaus - this vid is like a work of art.
Very interesting video. Thank you. And your English and accent are wonderful. If only I could recite Goethe as well as you honor our Mr. Twain I would return the favor. Keep up the excellent work.
I've ordered a couple Case Barlows as they will soon "disappear back into the vault." Hopefully Case will devote a little time to the finishing of these special revivals instead of today's unfortunate sloppy grinds, bad centering, blade rub and uneven cover finishing. I'm not holding my breath as 50% of my Case collection is not held to standards of what Case used to be, but that said, to my knowledge these Case Barlows are only rivalled by GEC-- which are at least double the price (or triple on the secondary market). Case finishing is worlds ahead of other such offerings from Schrade or Imperial, but GEC is worlds ahead of Case (if you have exclusive knowledge and reserve your knife as soon as GEC thinks of secretly making the 5 knives they come out with every 13 years)...
@Guru1ofatl Thank you for your kind words! Very much appreciated!
@BladeReviewscom Thank you for your kind words!
Another good video I love history especially american history, nice touch connecting a knife to classic american novels.
Thank you for the outstanding review and history lesson.
It's sad that a lot of Americans don't respect their history as much as other people respect our history.
Man I'm loving these traditional folder reviews. As much as I like the modern designs there's jsut something special when using one of those timeless classics
Excellent review of the Case Barlow and great job with the Twain information.
Great video as always! I'm going to have to get the audio books you recommended.
@heynewgirl Thank you for your kind words!
I really like all of your videos!!! very informative.
@teekay989 Thank you for your very kind words!
@jimkressin Thanks for your support, James!
@ATF6281914 I agree, the description is the best part of this video. LOL - Thanks for watching the whole thing!
One of your best
Thank you!
It should me noted that during the 19th century in America any inexpensive small folding knife was often called a "Barlow" knife regardless of the actual pattern or manufacturer of it. The style that we know today as a Barlow knife was not established until the 1920's.
No, the pattern was already established before then, though the name had become synonymous with small affordable pocket knives during the 1920s.
love long videos. here to learn
Excellent video. Thanks so much.
Wonderful video, I loved it. Thankyou very much.
@knifeaddiction2011 Thank you for your kind words!
Awesome vids man your vids are top shelf.
You make very good videos...Thank you sir.
@inquisitivewolf Thank you very much for your appreciation of my work!
@stschmalhaus Yes it is. Its a show where people bring in antiques and the historians/experts on that item appraise it. Its pretty cool!
@tennessee226 No problem. A three-blade Barlow would be very unusual.
That's a very interesting thought!
Great job! Good luck!
@ristin59 Thank you! - You will probably also like my review on the Case Eisenhower. ;-)
That was great...thank you.
Phenomenal video
@An0nEeMouse Thank you very much!
@sae1095hc Thanks for the hint! I will definitely check this out.
Thank you!
Wonderful!
@edgedweapon88 You are welcome, Keelen! It was a lot of fun to get all the information together and to develop the concept for this video. So I wouldn't call it hard work. ;-)
There is an old American fiddle tune called "Barlow Knife," and you can find versions of it on UA-cam. It has three parts, with a verse to be sung to each: "I've been a-fiddling all my life, and all I've got is a Barlow Knife." "Barlow handle and a Barlow blade, best old knife that ever was made." "You can take my dog, you can take my wife, but you can't take my Barlow knife."
+Stefan Schmalhaus No apology necessary for the accent. I wish I could hear you narrarate the whole lot of Twain's writings. excellent videos. thank you.
@SharpAirsoft I see. We have a similar show on German TV.
Oh yeah, if you're interested in the kinds of pocket knives available at that time, check out the knives recovered from the 1856 Missouri river wreck of the Arabia. Just search: "steamboat arabia knives"
@pelahale Wow! Thank you!
this was fantastic
@DickPoleman Thanks for watching!
@SharpAirsoft Is this a TV show? (Sorry, as a German I'm not familiar with American TV shows.)
tolles video Stefan!
@fredde90210 Thanks for watching!
Also if anyone is interested Ken Burns did an awesome documentary on Mark Twain's life.
@doomcannon445 Thanks for watching!
I am learning the names of the parts of a knife from a German speaker!
I hope you learn them without my German accent. 😉
@tendollarword Thank you!
@zeltarstormrun Thank you!!
@freedoomed Thank you!
You should work for antiques roadshow.
@sae1095hc Great story! Thanks for sharing!
@mrmonkeyman50 its not weather they know grammar its the fact that the internet has always been informal due to they laziness of typing. i grant there are a few who dont know but majority especially in america read tom sawyer and huck fin when they were in elementary school. and now as a 15 year old's perspective you dont have to learn anymore it used to be learn or sleep and get detention/hit now its learn or text and play games on your iphone during class. motivation is the problem.
@cheeseshoes I was thinking the exact same thing.
@mrmonkeyman50 my speaking is wonderful and moving its just when i type that i find difficulty. i do not think it is you carrying me but the children that carry you, regardless of my difficulties in english you must agree that when these people reach the age of 18 you're screwed
I don't own the Case Hobo.
@cheeseshoes First off, the first 3 words of your comment are "It's not whether..." That's 2 errors in just 3 words! Instead of worrying about others' motiviation.... :o) which is ironic given your complaints about others. By the way, the majority of elementary school children do not read Huck Finn or Tom Sawyer. Cheers!
Did you read my last comment? I said that due to the informality of the Internet, grammar is typically not proper. I do believe that I should be worrying about my peers motivation, seeing as I have to cooperate with them as a community in the near future. I would also say I do have motivation due to the fact I am trying to persuade others to take their culture seriously. Thus making your sense or irony questionable. By the way Tom Sawyer is 5th grade reading level and a part of most curriculums.
@mrmonkeyman50 i am clean i am a former German current American in an American public school system located in the American heartland where the curriculum is as required 2 novels a year in a high school English class with 4 years of English classes to be accepted into any state college and i do have memories of not that long ago when i was forced to read TomSawyer in 5th grade then forced to read the Giver in 6th grade which was a little harder but still comprehensible if you wanted to learn
@PACMAN1134 I think I'm an Irishman trapped in the body of a German. LOL
LOL Thank you! Did you buy Case knives?
