      I am Japanese. It seems that some people are making a fuss about the lack of black people in SHOGUN. Several years before this era, there was a black samurai named Yasuke who served under Nobunaga. However, he was released from his samurai status at the same time as Nobunaga's assassination. Before him, there was no other black person in Japan. Also, in the era of this drama, only Europeans, let alone Americans, came to Japan. Also,There were no black aristocrats in Europe at that time.

    There is a poem taught to school children in Japan about a bird that does not sing. According to Oda Nobunaga (Garoda, who Mariko's father killed) if the bird doesn't sing, kill it. According to Toyotomi Hideyoshi (The Taiko) if the bird doesn't sing, coax it to sing. According to Tokugawa Ieyasu (Toronaga) if the bird doesn't sing, wait

    This is the best episode so far imo. The first 3 were 99/100 and this was 100/100! I think Mariko enjoys being dominate with John, something she cannot be with any other man in Japan. She told him to not speak out of tongue once and she initiated the sex, going to him, moving his hand away, taking charge. She can be more assertive with him, and she enjoys it.

    Mariko WAS the courtesan that Fuji-sama arranged for Anjin. As his courtesan, Fuji runs his house and is responsible to care for him. It would not be unreasonable for her to select a temporary courteson whom Anjin would accept. As a single woman, it would not be unusual for Mariko to serve as the courtesan.
    It is also expected that they would not plainly speak of the arrangement (in Japan they live the phrase "what is understood doesn't need to be said"). Even to this day, it is uncouth to speak bluntly in Japan. You speak around the topic. In Japan, "the courtesan was acceptable?" is the same thing as Austin Powers saying, "I shagged her rotten!"
    In this show, Ishido is the only one to whom the rules don't apply. His plain speach in Episode 1 was socially insulting, his direct accusation multiplied the offense. That is why Tadayoshi reacted so aggressively. However, Tadayoshi "losing his cool" is also an social insult (even in defense of his lord's pride), particularly when Toronaga is just taking the face punches, and Tadayoshi's sepuku was Toronaga taking the "Higher-ground" in the disagreement.
    You'll recall the priest in prison that told John, "You're a child in the wilderness, you don't know their games...You can't play their game, their rules are too opaque, their hearts too guarded."

It wasn't clear if Lady Gratia also learn English, but it would be a good plot twist for the drama series if later Blacktorn found out that Mariko are actually understand his language but she hide it 😂

    not only did the lead actor Hiroyuki Sanada wanted the show to be accurate when it came to the costumes and customs etc, but most of the characters on this show are also based on real historical people and the story is also based on real historical events. So not only is Shogun a fantastic series, but it's also like being given a rough history lesson of what happened during that time period in early 1600s feudal japan. Of course the story is not completely factually accurate, some parts are dramatised and sensationalised, but most of the story were still inspired by true events.

    • @wh_kers
      @wh_kers 6 місяців тому

      I think it's not early 1600 after he won at sekigahara. this might be before the battle, around after hediyoshi death. c.1595-1599?. ishida & tokugawa forces were just starting to build up to east & west

    • @iamlinda100
      @iamlinda100 6 місяців тому +4

      @@wh_kers The character of Blackthorne is based on the real William Adams who arrived in Japan in 1600. And the show states in the first episode that the story takes place in 1600. Of course the show is not going to be 100% historically accurate, some parts of the story could've been dramatised, sensationalised or even changed, but it is still roughly based on real events, so most of the story should be accurate.

      I mean you cant really say Hiroyuki was the reason its based upon history and what was around then, considering shogun was a book and a tv show in the 80s so i mean you should at least credit the original work😂

    • @iamlinda100
      @iamlinda100 6 місяців тому +4

      @@finger3306 of course not, the show is based on a book that was published in the 1970s. What I meant is that HIroyuki Sanada is not just the lead actor but he is also a producer on the show and it was him who made sure that the show remained accurate to Japanese culture and history, and he insisted on hiring mostly Japanese actors and crew members. In fact he put his foot down and actually gave the studio executives an ultimatum, that all japanese characters must be played by real japanese actors and the show must be culturally accurate & realistic, or he would not work on the show. So while the show is based on a book, which in turn is based on real historical events, but it was mainly Hiroyuki who made sure that Japanese culture and customs were portrayed accurately and authentically on the show.

    in the original series and book, the woman that Blackthorne had sex with was supposed to be the Courtesan Kiku but it was actually Lady Mariko. It had to be kept SECRET because for a High Born Samurai woman to sleep with a "barbarian" or a Lower Ranking Samurai like some common Courtesan would have been a Huge Scandal

    • @overthewebb
      @overthewebb 29 днів тому

      You are kind of right, but the book is the same as this tv show in that, they sleep together in darkness and it's not known who he slept with. The only difference in the book is that John and Mariko ride horses when it's spoke about the next day. Of course Mariko cannot say she slept with John, as she's supposed to be just a translator and Mariko is also a Samurai. Samurai for those who don't know is a family title, like a Lord or Lady in Medieval times, in the West. it's not a job as a knight how we use it in the West. So Mariko would bring shame on herself if she slept with him and both she and John would be killed if it was known outside. You should also remember John was Hatamoto, so a high rank and this outranked her Samurai title in many ways, the rank wasn't the issue. It's to do with family positions and the job she was supposed to be doing

    Thanks, Cam! Thanks, Demica! 🗾 The reaction 'John' had to learning 'Mariko' wasn't who slept with him was one of the only things I recalled from the miniseries from 1980. It was played off, nearly ignored here. There was more of a sense of betrayal... then embarrassment that he couldn't tell the women apart... in near-total darkness. It was explained that the woman was made to wear the perfume that 'Mariko' usually wears, to further the ploy.

    The relationship between Mariko and Blackthorn is focused on more in the books and the 80's miniseries. They cut a lot of that development from this adaptation in order to focus more time on the Japanese characters. For example, you didn't get to see Ohmi manipulating Toranaga's son into attacking Ishido's forces in the 80's mini series, but you did see a lot more of Mariko and Blackthorn making doe eyes at each other before the whole "Consort" trick.
    The choice does make their relationship feel somewhat rushed and forced, but I understand the choice so accept the trade off. Whether or not it was a "good" choice is subjective.

      I don't mind them not focusing on the relationship as much, I'm much more interested in the Japanese characters, the culture, and the history the time itself.
