Hi Jared, You speak Tagalog very well, I’m a 66 year old White-American from Las Vegas, Married to a Filipina, we have a home in the Philippines and live here about 6-months out of the year, I understand basic words in a conversation and get where it’s going , I speak to my family in English and they speak Tagalog to me. Thank you , You have encouraged me to further any my language skills, I hear my wife warning her family members to be careful what they say around me because my understanding is expanding, they get the nose bleed and I tell them that I get an ear bleed, kind and wonderful people. Old Uncle that rides a big bike. There’s millions of scooters , motorcycles and tricycles, most of which are under 150cc, I ride a 400cc Kawasaki Dominar because it is allowed on the expressways.

To learn a culture, you must learn the language. By interacting with native speakers of that language, you learn more about the culture; this is what Kurt has accomplished.

REALITY
I see people speaking Tagalog. But after a small fortune on lessons and very little help after 12 years, I am incapable of speaking or understanding. When I tried speaking I was ridiculed, laughed at, had what I said repeated back to me in English, and ignored. Worst place in people not teaching their own language.
I stopped going to gatherings of any kind since translation or help ended after 5 minutes and I ended up alone in a crowd. My relationship of many years has been damaged in part due to this.
I TELL AND WARN PEOPLE TO NEVER MOVE ANYWHERE UNLESS YOU KNOW THE LANGUAGE FIRST.
Immersion you might say, well that failed. I am alone, lonely and isolated. For long periods I cry alone over this.
I have researched language learning and acquiring more than I ever thought I would.
ALL FOREIGNERS I PERSONALLY KNOW IN THE PHILIPPINES GAVE UP. Many of those foreigners knew other languages and English was not the first language with many. And no, they did not all speak European languages.
Similarities... every hispanic nation I've visited has a version of "filipino time" , including spain... other common traits are not allowing anything to impede fiesta and siesta times...

HI Jared ang galing mo. My kids were born and raised here in the US. Malungkot ako di sila marunong mag Tagalog. They understand some very basic Tagalog but not much. Kasalan ko rin while they were growing up my husband and I spoke to them in English. So sa bahay it was just my husband and I who spoke Tagalog to each other and then spoke English to our kids. Some of Their cousins who were also born and raised here can speak fluent Tagalog because they had their grandmas come over from the Philippines to babysit them here while growing up. The grandma spoke to them in Tagalog so they learned. We didn’t have that privilege of having either of our moms help us raise our kids.

Galing! 👍 I am a beginner in Tagalog. I was in The Philippines 🇵🇭 in 2022. I wanted to speak Tagalog but the natives insisted in speaking English to metatarsal! L 🤣L I also should have learned other Philippine languages at the conversational level.

The Philippine languages were of little use when I left The Philippines 🇵🇭 and traveled to Singapore 🇸🇬...except for 5 or 6 Filipinos I met.
Mark Twain was once a writer in my hometown San Francisco 🌉 He wrote for The SF Examiner. He also said that German was an awful language! L 🤣 L That was in one of his essays.

Tagalog is not the only Dialect or langauge for the lack of better word. Bisaya Dialect covers the the whole Visayas and Mindanao Regions, you have to know the Geography of the Philippines, Regional and Provinces speaks variety of dialects, thats why English is the Second Language. Before the Spanish and the Americans colonized the Philippines 🇵🇭, we have our Languages, Religion, written letters and words. The Japanese occupied the Philippines briefly but Japan influence the Philippines. Chinese and Malaysian, Indonesian and othe Asian Countries influenced the Philippines. Two vloggers in the Philippines Becoming Filipino kulas, speaks Bisaya, Bisayang Hilaw are both fluent in Bisaya, Carlson was also a missionary in the Philippines, he is also from Utah I believe.! 🇵🇭
For me the story of Filipinas looks fascinating, I follow a Filipino guy on TikTok and he made some videos about the history, he was talking about Macario Sakay, I honestly think the story of this man could become a movie.
I think I gonna study Tagalog in the future, but right now I am studying Korean (which is really hard).
