Finally someone has recommended this track! I have only been into Nightwish since 2019 and I had never heard this until I saw the remastered version. But I was perplexed - how come this is not in the top echelon of Nightwish songs? Why was it not part of the decades tour? Why, when people recommend the "heavier" side of Nightwish this never gets a mention?
When I listen to that album, that song is one of the highlights. 🤘🏻
This song is a Bulldozer passing you by mixed with a bit of the sweet angelical voice of Tarja. Love and pain.

Tuomas has said that Dead Gardens is about writer's block. He wrote this song about writer's block so he could get ridd of it and write the rest of the album. Tuomas is just a mastermind!
The first time I heard Dead Gardens, at the end when it was looping, I thought it got stuck like a record.... and I was listening it from Spotify!😅 yet, I still got that feeling!😂
And it fits that it has the sudden stop but then after Dead Gardens, starts Romanticide... like straight after. Amazing! (Also, if you haven’t listened to the studio version of Romanticide... go and listen to it on your own time, when you have time. It almost feels like a different song compared to the live versions.)
About the growls, to me it sounds like Marko... I don’t know but I have always thought that it's Marko.
For me, Once is Nightwish's masterpiece. It's just the perfect album. And it has my all time favourite Nightwish track, Nemo.
Tarja has said that Once is her favourite album from Nightwish, because everything was in harmony there. Everything fit. She said that she had finally learned to colour the songs with her voice the way she wanted.

Written by a rather frustrated Tuomas when he was suffering from writer’s block. At one point things were so bad he hit his keyboard hard enough to break a key. Anyway, eventually he broke the block by writing a song about it and “Dead Gardens” is the result.
Yeah, especially knowing the backround, this song is so genious. The lyrics, the structure... and the ending is the cherry on top. 🤘

First as I’m sure other people will tell you, it’s Yukka, not Kai. Anyway, lol, I’m If you’re an Emppu fan, this song is a treat. As a person who essentially was not a metal head growing up it’s amazing to realise that the music was always awesome. I now understand the screaming and the growling turned me off so much, I never took the time to listen. Another thing to thank Nightwish for.

Not heard the remastered version before. I've only recently bought the Once earbook, I still need to pay back the general household funds before I'm allowed to listen to it! It's the only way to stop me vastly overspending on audio...

Great reaction and analysis of this song. You brought interesting references. Personally, it reminds me a lot of the Metallica sound. In several parts of Nightwish songs, in fact, I remember Metallica. In the song Sahara, for example, there's almost a moment in the song where I say "Saaad But Truuueee" XD
This song is about writer's block, which is why it has that abrupt, uninspired ending. Brilliant move.

2004 they realesed Once, Tarjas last album with NW. First Era is the best one and this album is pure magic.

Once is an album I thought you might have heard about before you were Nightwish-conscious. Maybe between Once and Dark Passion Play, they gained the rare amount of U.S. interest. While firmly planted within the American bubble, I would still hear stuff from those two albums occasionally. Once isn't my favorite but even some of the worst American music rags put it in their top 100 metal albums. Not sure that's a positive or a negative. 🔥🤘🔥

The problem I have with many current Nightwish fans is that they forget the Tarja era, there was some amazing music done in those years too.
I concur. Just my opinion, but I think Tuomas needs to get back to writing more stuff like this again. Proper power metal.
@@freddieboyce8597 Yeah, he is a talented composer, but I get the feeling that he has been playing around to see how far he can stretch Floor's voice the last few years. He does need to concentrate more on just writing good music IMO.
I concur re Tarja, but I believe Tuomas is evolving. Whether we take the journey w him is up to us.

The latest: recent interview - Marko says he "would consider rejoining Nightwish if they change the way they manage the business side of the band". a 2026 tour will be here sooner than you think.

She has sung opera arias in her solo career. But she was trained in German Lied singing.
I never knew the intro to Black Sunshine was by Iggy Pop.
This album had big money because Century Child was a commercial success before it.
The album Once had a budget of €1 000 000.00 and the videos had a budget of €750 000.00.
The tour was called ONCE upon a dream.
The EoE show starts with Dark Chest of Wonder. Which starts with "I once had a dream and this is it." At the end of the night and the show. After the firrworls, the bows. On the screen we see "I once had a dream, and this was it."
Now if you want to sample Tarja now the live show Live at Circus Life (Bucharest Romania )March 2020. In the round live with orchestra and choir nothing pre recorded and played back. Then there is Outlanders with EDM artist Torsten Stenzel a dip into accoustic EDM with world class guitarists recored in Hopes Bay, Antigua. 10 years in the making.
Then her accoustic covers of 90s metal Rocking Heels live at metal church Waken 2016. Released late summer 2023.
Then Dark Christmas Oct/Nov 2023 and then...get back to us on "She can only sing...." She can only sing anything and make it glorious .
Heaven lent us one.of its choir members I am sure with Tarja.❤

Hola Eric necesito que reacciones a Passion and the ópera de Nightwish versión de estudio y compara con la version de Tarja como Solista año 2007 Remaster es una de las canciones mas dificles que ha interpretado Tarja en la banda de Nightwish ya que en ese entonces ella estaba estudiando la voz clasica operistica recuerdo en una entrevistas que dijo que salió llorando del set fe grabación porque no podia alcanzar esas notas altas y dijo que Tuomas y todo el equipo la engaño para grabar la versión de estudio ya que le dijeron que cantara como podia con el micrófono que no de estaba grabando pero en realidad si lo grabaron Tarja estaba tranquila y dio lo mejor de si en esa canción y lo grabaron y usaron esa grabación para la version de estudio cuenta Tarja que sola una o dos veces año 2000 cantaron en vivo esa canción porque Tarja terminaba la canción quedándose sin aire existen algunas grabaciones de fans pero lastimosamente no es buena calidad lastima con Nightwish no se pudo conseguir una grabación de buena calidad esa canción nunca más Nightwish la volvio a incluir en una setlist de las giras ni con Tarja ni Annette ni Floor solo Tarja la pudo cantar en Nightwish fuera de ella la única que canto esta canción fue Tarja como Solista ya con la voz mas trabajada y pudo alcanzar una nota muy buena y limpia en el año 2007 la canto varias veces pero solo hay una grabación de media calidad remasterizada de ese vídeo y el audio es muy buena digno de reaccionar a Passion and the ópera versión estudio fe Nightwish y Passion and the ópera versión remasterizado en vivo de Tarja como Solista año 2007

I would have loved to see/listen to Floor's version of it, I'm pretty sure she would have done an excellent job vocally. Also, the hard, heavy melody is pure fire
