Love the irony that Richard Wilson played the jobsworth types in A Sharp Intake of Breath then plays the bureaucratic ‘victim’ as such in One Foot In The Grave
It's also ironic that Brendan O'Carroll is one of the most pleasant people I've ever seen interviewed. He praises his co-workers effusively and tells wonderful stories. Why is that show so terrible then?
I remember Don't Wait Up (Nigel Havers was in everything in the 80s), First of the Summer Wine and French Fields (as well as Fresh Fields), but that last one, "his curate, played by Ray Winstone" - the mind boggles!😳
Funny how 'studio audiences' always seem to have a much lower threshold for what constitutes funniness. Someone delivering dismally contrived dross such as some of the above alleged comedies did, would be either ignored or asked if they were feeling alright - just as well the our broadcasters (BBC in particular) rise above it all by NEVER sweetening poorly written crap. I love this channel - keep up the great work ! 😁
I knew there was an absolutely painful comedy in the late 80s about two friends running a catering business but could never remember what it was called. We gave up on it in our house after one episode which featured the ancient joke about putting cream and sugar on strawberries rather than manure. The latter summed up All About Spice perfectly, although Julia Watson and Natalie Ogle are really good actresses!
'A Sharp Intake Of Breath', always reminds me of the other series that Richard Wilson was in on ITV that also starred James Bolam, namely, 'Only When I Laugh.' Peter Bowles and Christopher Strauli also starred.
There is also A Very Peculiar Practice with Peter Davison the former Doctor playing a Doctor. This was more comedy drama it was from the eighties, it then became A Very Polish Practice for a one-off special in the 90s.
I do recall A Gentleman's Club... Never watched it I am afraid to say so no footage anywhere on an old VHS... I dont think it did too well as I recall it only had one series.
much like Judge Dredd years later, Andy Capps biggest flaw was you got to see his face. Something you never did in the cartoon strip, it was always hidden in the shadow of his cap
First of the Summer Wine I do remember that one not a patch of Last of... but not terrible. A bit miss cast perhaps. French/Fresh fields I remember as well but not very fondly
The only thing I remember about "First of the summer wine" was that Paul White's young Compo was a foot taller than Bill Owen's old Compo. I don't remember it having canned laughter (was there a non-studio pilot? Or has The Mandela Effect struck again?)
The thing I remember is them being like a load of village idiots, in particular Compo. Still, I guess that beat him being the dirty old man of later life in both senses!
I remember the newspaper short comic strip cartoon of Andy Capp can’t recall the TV adaption. I do remember A Short Intake of Breath and First of the Summer Wine, I thought it was okay, there have been a lot lot worse. As for the others featured nope non recognition
I remember Father Matthew’s Daughter, I don’t think anyone would make a sitcom about a catholic priest raising a child these days. It was one of those very inoffensive sitcoms, I recall the plot of one episode centring around the girl turning out to be short sighted and needing to get glasses.
I didn't watch first of the Summer Wine as had long since drifted away from it's parent show by then. But I do remember someone pointing out it didn't stick to it's own continuity. It was Compo Clegg and Seymour. When by rights it should have been Compo Clegg and Blamire. The latter being the character MIchael Bates played in the first two seasons before he had to leave due to illness and was replaced by Brian Wilde. Rememver seeing a trailer for Andy Capp. 'Do you know it's four O'CLock in the morning?'. Andy sings it's four O'clock in the morning. Just...no.
As I remember, this show was at a time and day slot on the BBC for new comedy, and the very next new comedy shown was the more successful Birds of a feather.
@@apmcd47 Probably because, although I was vaguely aware he was in it, I never caught that one. Was it any good? I had a cassette of TV themes so I'm aware its theme wasn't the song "When the Boat Comes In".
They used to show first of the summer wine on gold. I don’t know why it was so unfunny then again I didn’t even like last of the summer wine either I was too young to appreciate it I guess as I was a 90s/00s kid
I have vague memories of most of these and can assure you that they were all pretty dreadful. They were psychological torture - really depressing, not funny in the least, yet with inappropriate canned laughter tracks being played throughout, causing you, the viewer, to become a willing volunteer for a full-frontal lobotomy or sign-up for the army in the vain hope that you may get blown to pieces on some battlefield somewhere. Similar to the 'aversion therapy' that appears in A Clockwork Orange. 'Are you being served?' - yes, complete vomit inducing garbage, thank you very much, you absolute bastards!
Despite a sense of foreboding, I watched an episode of Andy Capp. Goodness me, it was embarrassingly awful. Ditto Don’t Wait Up and First Of The Summer Wine
Love the irony that Richard Wilson played the jobsworth types in A Sharp Intake of Breath then plays the bureaucratic ‘victim’ as such in One Foot In The Grave
And voice over actor number two for Archie the skeleton in the late 80’s after Deryck Guyler.
The ad before this video was for Mrs Brown’s Boys live show. Talk about irony, the one sitcom I really want to forget.
It's also ironic that Brendan O'Carroll is one of the most pleasant people I've ever seen interviewed. He praises his co-workers effusively and tells wonderful stories. Why is that show so terrible then?
Thanks for letting us know this was going to be late, it was appreciated, and a nice little bonus on a Friday afternoon!
Don't Wait Up was played on my PBS station, I remember liking it. I wouldn't mind seeing it again!

The hospital based Only When I Laugh was one of my personal favourites from the 80s.
Watched it on my weekend off. Still funny
Not great, not terrible, same bloke who did rising damp
Eric Chappel wrote that... as well as Home to Roost. Rising Damp was a 100% comedy masterpiece though.
@@paulhirst7602 Love all three of those!
@@Paul_1971 You have good taste
If you ever do a series of sit-coms based on the star, I would love a list of all of Felicity Kendall's.
Never heard of A Sharp Intake Of Breath. The title's some mouthful. 'Look to the left' got a chuckle out of me, though.
Sharp intake of breath was underrated, it was a very funny sitcom.

The happy Apple from 1983, only 7 episodes were made, starred Leslie Ash and Jeremy Child, It was set in an advertising agency

The only one I remember is "A sharp intake of breath". Anything involving David Jason and Richard Wilson is always worth remembering.
much like Judge Dredd years later, Andy Capps biggest flaw was you got to see his face. Something you never did in the cartoon strip, it was always hidden in the shadow of his cap
Not true. He took his cap off plenty of times in the cartoon strip.
Haven't seen a mention of 'No Strings' (1989) starring Edward Petherbridge and Jean Marsh.. but I might have missed it
I remember Andy cap being an short cartoon strip in an newspaper.
First of the Summer Wine I do remember that one not a patch of Last of... but not terrible. A bit miss cast perhaps. French/Fresh fields I remember as well but not very fondly
wow, i came here hoping for Clarence and Nightingales, I'm getting an education! Will subscribe :)

Didn't one of the cast die penniless in a cockroach infested flat?
The thing I remember is them being like a load of village idiots, in particular Compo. Still, I guess that beat him being the dirty old man of later life in both senses!
Any aspiring Brit actors out there. Check out Tim Roth, Malcom McDowell and James Bolam.
These guys are the best of the last 40 years in theatre.

I have Andy cap on dvd when in the likely lads people called the part James played sometimes Andy cap
How about ‘Till Death…’? Basically Till Death Us Do Part but on ITV which had to be renamed because BBC had the rights to the full title.
Let have a mixed bag episode
I mainly remember Ffizz because it was made by the eventual cocreators of The Brittas Empire.
Remember Dont wait up and French Fields.
Anyone remember lame ducks?
Wow, was First of the Summer Wine really so long ago?
I can't remember any sitcoms at the age of 80. I don't even know how to use the internet machine.
Add depth

‘Can We Get On Now, Please?’ Don’t recall your covering this 1980’s sitcom as yet … 😾
James bolam in Andy capp, the role he was born to play
Seeing David Jason, my guess is a sharp intake of breath...
The review of A Touch of Spice doesn't even get the name of one of the actresses right. She's Julia Watson, not Judith Watson.
As I remember, this show was at a time and day slot on the BBC for new comedy, and the very next new comedy shown was the more successful Birds of a feather.
That Andy Capp is the guy from Grandpa in my pocket😂
Ok Zoomer! He's also from The Likely Lads, Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads, Only When I Laugh, The Biederbecke Trilogy and New Tricks.
@@Gmackematix You forgot "When the Boat Comes In", a post-World-War-One drama

Used to love Andy Capp, the comic. It didn't age well for me though.
Who's the lovely lady in the thumbnail?
A sharp intake of breath was the best of a bad bunch
I don't remember A Sharp Intake Of Breath being on in the 80s ?
I think 70s. Predates Only fools which started 1981/2
Quite liked French fields, seen a lot worse! 😊
It was ok, I did prefer Fresh Fields though.
First of the summer wine was awful
Didn't see First... but last of the summer, wine should've ended when Bill Owen passed away. When he died....the show died with him.
Andy capp was terrible 😱
I actually liked first of the summer wine
They used to show first of the summer wine on gold. I don’t know why it was so unfunny then again I didn’t even like last of the summer wine either I was too young to appreciate it I guess as I was a 90s/00s kid
People often bemoan the current lack of sitcoms but the vast majority were complete shite
Shame you couldn't find any footage of a touch of spice to show how unfunny it was 😂

Dont wait up was a hit and Fresh Fields French fields.
