The moment a Princess became a Queen - BBC News

- Queen Elizabeth II becomes Britain's longest-reigning monarch later when she passes the record set by her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria. Princess Elizabeth became Queen while on an official visit to Kenya, while she was staying at the Treetops Hotel when her father, King George the 6th, died in 1952.
Alastair Leithead has been retracing her steps.

Who else was imagining the crown from Netflix scene
Me 😂✌️
Me too
I have heard it’s great series!🌸 I don’t have Netflix unfortunately
Meee
I thought the tree house was just made up...
I can't imagine the weight she felt, not only dealing with her father just passing, but now the role she was to take up.
A loving daughter, she must have felt the enormous loss at the same time the weight of the monarchy descended upon her shoulders.
Like Queen Victoria saying, “I will be good.”
Elizabeth II has been a great monarch.
Especially considering she was never supposed to be Queen. Her uncle abdicated the throne to marry the woman he loved (who was divorced) so his brother, Prince George became King, which led to Princess Elizabeth (now Queen) being next in line to the throne.
I wonder if she would have had a younger brother back then if she would have been skipped over. I know the Queen changed the rules when Prince William's daughter Princess Charlotte was born.

it's absolutely crazy how footage from her first day as Queen was on black and white film, to be shown as newsreels, while her last day can be watched instantly from anywhere in the world in full colour HD
Fantastic point. She served through so many eras, and was a constant. RIP Lilibet…
The fact that she was able to smile just hours after her daddy died is just mind blowing to me. You can see how shattered she is if you ignore that gorgeous smile and look into her eyes but my god, what a powerful woman.
The footage of her smiling is from her arrival; her father hadn’t passed yet.
The moment where immortality begins.

How you mean ?
This breaks my heart always thinking of this beautiful young woman , just has become the mother of two , enjoying the animal scene she could watch from this tree house ... ... and her husband had to bring her the literally heartbreaking news ... she too the flight home to cry - and the young Queen stepped out of the plane ....
Her Husbands life changed too!
To put it into perspective on how old the queen is, when she was made queen Joseph Stalin was still alive
Here's another one -- throughout the entire run of James Bond (books and movies) it's always been Her Majesty's Secret Service.
Alright guys, now do Prince Philip lol
@@samg1879 Prince Philip was born in 1921, just a year after the Spanish flu died down. He was born while all of Ireland was still a part of the UK, and the Ottoman Empire still existed. Dear Queen,
You were a great example of strength, both during good times and rather difficult ones. If there was anyone from whom we could learn self-discipline and courage at all times then it was you. May your soul rest in peace. Amen. 🙏
Today on the 8th of September 2022, her majesty Queen Elizabeth II peacefully passed away in Balmoral surrounded by her family. God save the Queen, long live the King!
From the footage of her childhood, you could see how close she was to her dad. Her lil arms around him. Touching his hair. And this news !! She must have been totally devastated. Her dearest father gone while she was left alone to shoulder all the responsibilities without him. The way she’d learnt to hide all her emotions behind a smile like a real leader. She could be very proud yet always humble & grateful for being chosen by God, what she said. ❤

Shame, the tree top's hotel was demolished.
It burned down, it wasn't demolished. "Demolished" would imply that it was intentional, this seems to have been an accident.
typically one "demolishes" something when it burns down.
Actually, no. To demolish is to raze or pull down a building. Demolishing is descriptive of the action of tearing down a building, not of a building burning down.
It was struck by lightning then burned! What is wrong with you foreigners who don't know much about African history!?

I hate it when they say her role as queen of England. She’s not just the queen of England, she’s the queen of Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and more. Calling her the queen of England is true, but it omits all her other kingdoms.

Well technically it started as England, so it is partly right but nowadays I refer to her as "Her Majesty the Queen of the Commonwealth" or simply "Queen of the Commonwealth".

I don't know how you missed the fact that the legendary Jim Corbett was on guard on said night at the Tree Tops Hotel protecting the royal couple. And it was Jim Corbett himself who framed that famous adage.

"Queen of England" from a reporter who works for the "British" Broadcasting Corp. ...!!!
Exactly....
Well she technically is the queen of england... And scotland, northern ireland, canada, australia and some other commonwealth nations
@@Haliya. So, if the reporter had said "Queen of Northern Ireland", I reckon the immediate response would have been ~ NO she is not, the same as if he had said "Queen of Scotland" or "Queen of ??". The point that is being made, is the phrase "Queen of England" for some unknown reason always appears to be very acceptable, when really it should NOT ...........
@@PleasantvilleLad I'm not from the UK or any commonwealth nation, so I don't claim to be an expert, but Queen of England, or any of nation where she is queen should be factually correct. If one argues that it should be Queen of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, then from the same logic, her other dominions should be mentioned which would become quite lengthy.
@@PleasantvilleLad "The Queen" works, most people don't really know other queens (at least in nations without monarchy).
About that American thing, they're really not the only ones who do that, had I not seen yes minister and yes prime minister, I wouldn't really know that the UK is composed of 4 countries. It was really weird when I found out.
Most of the histories about the UK in my country is primarily about colonialism, and of that, we primarily focus on the Spanish as we were a former Spanish colony.

As the exact time of the late King's death is uncertain. Queen Elizabeth is the only British Monarch who does not know the exact time she became queen.
at 07:30 GMT on the morning of 6 February, he was found dead in bed at Sandringham House in Norfolk. He had died in the night from a coronary thrombosis at the age of 56. His daughter flew back to Britain from Kenya as Queen Elizabeth II.

Yes this is the magical moment every girl dreams of : the moment her beloved father dies. Its lovely that you romancize it.
I mean seriously, its horribly sad, she was only 25 and here is where she got the news her father died. There's no point in showcasing that "this is the place she became Queen".
I think that place was at her coronation and that this video is quite creepy.
As sad as it is, that life. And her as a royal will have a documented one. If she was opposed to this place she'd say but 8n the meantime it amy provide a better income for the manor in Nairobi.
In hereditary monarchies there is no interregnum, that means the heir ascends to the throne the moment the monarch dies/abdicates. The coronation is just a formal celebration, in the case of Elizabeth II it happened more than a year after her fathers death.
I dont think they purposely romanticize the idea of her father dying but the actual moment when she entered there as a princess and left as a queen. In my view, it leaves me with an awe feeling which I'm sure it wasn't good news for her or a great feeling.
I imagine for everyone else who are looking at these particular facts and details of how her life transitioned from just another wife and mother and now a reigning monarch.
I wonder what she must have thought about that night. Did she feel any different at dawn? Did she have a weird dream that may have symbolically showed the baton being passed on to her? Anyway sorry for ranting.
Sounds like you don't like Africa.
I agree. Not being there when the one you love most dies is the worst slap in the face anyone can ever get. It goes against every human instinct and I really doubt Elizabeth was excited to step into her dad's shoes, she was probably busy wishing and dreaming about running into his arms and telling him how much she loves him. Perspective.
God Save the Queen

what a neat tree house and for royalty no less
Damn
Love the old fella... reminds me of Patrick Trueman form EastEnders.
It was due to this that she made it a rule for royals and nobles to bring along a funeral outfit. She didn't have one at the time when she got back to GB. She ended up waiting two hours before she could disembark from the plane that brought her and Prince Phillip home.
Wow she's called a 'girl'...at 25?!
Well, in those times it was pretty scandalous see a "woman" of 15 years old taking photos of herself half naked, nowadays it's pretty common.
Different times with different attitudes towards women. There were even murmurings at the time that the Princess should be passed over in the line of succession and the crown given to one of her male cousins because it was thought that a young 25 year old woman couldn't possibly do it (even though her great grandmother Queen Victoria had done so for 60 years after ascending the throne age 18 - obviously they had short memories) I think we can safely say she's proved them wrong
ChooseYour Poison And look how it’s playing out... female “liberation” sure has worked out hasn’t it 😖
McMilk Well, considering that Elizabeth has been nothing short of a hard working, dutiful monarch with a good reputation all over the world... I’d say it’s working out great.
Even George V noted she and her father were both well suited for the throne ( far more than Edward).
Women were respected more then
2:09 'as Queen of England'
I would expect that mistake from an American reporter but a British reporter working for the British Broadcasting Corporation should know better!

The King is dead. Long live the Queen!
Queen of England, (that is suppose to cover everything) Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the rest of the Empire/Commonwealth, but Queen of Scots!
I do sometimes feel like although most people in England don't support Scottish independence, they don't really want us to stay either. You would understand tourists calling the queen the queen of England, but the fact that English people actually say it is pretty triggering.
Not really used to fan girling famous people but I like the late Queen because in a way, she did not really choose to be the Queen, in fact, if her uncle did abdicate and father died, she would probably be nobody. It's funny how the universe work.
And What Do You Do? Norman Baker.
ghastly to see this video was released on September 9, exactly 1 day after her death day (though 7 years earlier)
The gold ol' days when the British came to your home, found you, and displaced you. Imperial Britain.
The Romans did it to them so they felt justified
Somehow, I find this reporter cute.
Queen Anne was the last queen of England. Princess Elizabeth became Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
Translation is something else. The black man said, "she was a young girl...just like you" Addressing the journalist. Not "she was a young and beautiful lady". In our culture saying it the way the translator interpreted it is somewhat disrespectful

Hi
Queen Elizabeth ii is not just Queen of "England"!!
Crazy that a tree that was burned down 67 years ago is where today’s monarch became the monarch.
So the treehouse was burned down in 1954, the year my grandma was born...
I wonder if that lion knew she had become Queen and then decided not to eat her.
That and he saw how thin she was. He decided she was not worth the effort. Animals and most people in general do recognize real power when they see/smell it.
My mother and maternal grandmother are perfect examples.
Both very short, 4'9 in my mother's case 4'8 in my grandmother's case. Both very small build. Either one of them enters a room, they make a hole fast and show deference. They don't say a word. Their gaze says all that needs be said.
The aura of real power is always recognizable. Even blind people can see it
Most animals can smell it.
So the Crown did get this right
