Old Lady Kate Reacts 2: Tool - Ænema
Вставка

- EXPLICIT CONTENT: There are swears; both from us and from Maynard.
Welcome to the second episode in the every-so-often series where I introduce my wife to music she's never listened to but I've loved for years. By any metric she isn't actually old, but we affectionately refer to the character that emerges upon being surprised by something as "Old Lady Kate." Given the fact that the series will probably surprise her once or twice in that way, we figured we'd just name the whole thing that.
This time around we're continuing our tour through Tool's discography (currently planned for one song per album) with the semi-title track from Ænima, Ænema. I won't give anything away, but while this one gets a little more of a rise out of OLK, if you can't tell from the thumbnail, she isn't necessarily opposed to it...
In terms of audio, it's immediately pretty obvious that we don't have a genuine setup for videos, but I will try and get a better microphone situation at some point. That said, we did take the feedback from many viewers of the first episode and decided to implement "pause to talk" mode. Also we used a lyrics track instead of just the audio. Both made it so much better! Thank you all for the protips!
Enjoy the show!
If you'd like to check out the original audio video for Tool - Ænema, here you go!

And if you'd like to use @pinkbutfloyd17's lyrics video, here's that too!

Thanks for being here! - Ігри
Love the OLK reaction. Goin in... "Tool has some looooonng songs."
Six minutes later, "That's it?" 😆
Hahahahaha, I didn’t even notice this! Hahaha
@@GIVEPAUSEhobby Tool bends time
Love that you dig through the song and comment on it. Try a simple song to analyze, but very powerful - Right in Two. That song has everything I love about Tool. Hope to see more from you guys!
Great suggestion and thanks for the feedback! We’re absolutely loving this new way to enjoy something together; for me, it’s the joy of rediscovering an old love for the music that I’ve sort of drifted away from, but for her it’s a brand new love!
Welcome! Love this! We have a fan in the making 😎
Parabol & Parabola next please! ❤
Definitely on my short list! Thanks for watching!
As a long time Tool fan, I love seeing people introduced to them. Welcome to the conversation! Please keep reacting to more Tool. You're mind will be opened.
Thanks for tuning in! We’ll be exploring more for sure, don’t worry!
It’s funny Maynard added the lyrics about the tattoos because when he was in the Army he got this crazy scorpion tattoo on his back. The tail goes up his spine, I think it’s more of a criticism of stupid tattoos.
Oh man, that’s awesome! As people who typically sit with a tattoo idea for months on end before getting poked, we can both definitely get behind calling out stupid tattoos, haha
hahaha "hello different song from previous song" is a pretty good way to describe most of Tool's catalogue. Maynards vocalism is extremely intentional and nuanced. His diction, tone, pitch, dynamics are all masterclass. You've now done a song from the albums 10k Days and Aenima. Hopefully your next reaction is from Lateralus, the album in between. Given what you liked from this song and the pot, I'd highly highly recommend Parabol+Parabola next.
He’s _such_ an incredible vocalist. Just amazing work. Parabol + Parabola is _classic_ Tool for me (since I really came onto the Tool scene with Lateralus), so there’s a high chance we’ll get there at some point!
@@GIVEPAUSEhobby **high** chance lol
Bold choice to go right into AEnema 😂
Hahaha, that’s what I was kind of going for! After I deliberately chose The Pot as more of a mostly representative single, I wanted to dive deeper (though not go all the way back to Undertow just yet). Looking forward to checking out Lateralus in between these two records, as that was my MAJOR onboarding to Tool way back in high school.
This is prolly my favorite song EVER, it's so beautifully chaotic that it just works...her reaction is completely awesome! Keep rockin
So glad you enjoyed the reaction, I’m loving discovering her previously-unknown love of Tool! And glad we hit your tippy-top track!
not shocked tool sent your views higher than ever. the tool army loves seeing people react to the best band ever heh. some would say we live vicariously through these reactions since we can never hear them for the first time again heh.
much diff song than the last one you reacted to. this should be interesting and fun.
also, have you decided to go see them live yet? cuz you should :p
old lady kate: tool has long songs
also old lady kate: Thats it?! 😂
Oh man, I can 100% agree with the vicarious joy of witnessing someone near the songs for the first time (because I’ll never be able to again). It’s so magical!
Hahaha, seriously, such a great conflict of comments, hahaha
Adam Jones (guitar) is Tool's art director when it comes to album covers / album art and music videos. Before Tool he was working as an special effects artist in movies like "Jurassic Park", "Terminator 2" and many others.
Dude, WHAT!? Well now I wanna go down the rabbit hole looking at all his stuff!
Your sound quality is perfect btw. Your voices are at the same level as the music and it's just loud enough. I'm adoring these Tool reaction videos and I'm going to check out your board game videos. Games and music are two of my favorite things.
Thanks so much!!! Oh man, that means so much! Obviously this is a whole new genre for me to be filming and editing, so I’m thrilled that it’s coming across passably!
Awesome reaction! Can’t wait for the next Tool reaction! Maybe right in two or 46 & 2?
Thanks so much! That’s definitely on of my favorites, so it’s on the short list :)
"Arizona Bay," was going to be the name of a production company run by the comedian, Bill Hicks and his brother. Sadly Hicks passed away, still quite young, from an aggressive cancer. Hicks and Maynard had become close friends despite only having met a few years prior to Hicks passing. The Arizona Bay concept was one of Bill's comedic bits. The premise being that California deserved to slide off into the ocean, thus creating an Arizona coastline. Both Bill and Maynard held a fair amount of contempt and disdain for Los Angeles and Hollywood. They were in the beginning stages of a creative collaboration that would incorporate Hicks into some portion of TOOL's live shows. Hicks had done stand-up as an opening act for TOOL several times, but this thing he and Maynard were cooking up was sure to have been special. So, when Hicks died Maynard and the rest of TOOL agreed to dedicate the entire Aenima project to Bill Hicks. The spirit of Hicks permeates throughout the album, and most overtly as a couple of recordings of Hicks speaking.
I've listened to Aenima literally over 10,000 times, and that is not hyperbole at all, nor is it intended as a boast or brag. Whatever the actual crazy high number is, it's utterly insignificant juxtaposed to how, even after all those repetitions, and multiple decades, the album continues to reveal new, previously unnoticed nods, references, homages or subtle celebrations of the beautiful human that Bill Hicks was. Year after year I will realize some lyric, musical nuance or something will suddenly smack my brain as being another subtle eulogistic reference to Bill, even though I've heard or experienced that thing thousands of times prior and never caught it. It's really fuckn crazy how TOOL pushes SO MUCH farther than anyone on anything. 99% of any albums ever, "dedicated to," lost family or friends are exactly that, a liner note that says, "...dedicated to:" Maybe a song. I'm telling y'all, as an homage to a lost friend, Aenima, is a BEAUTIFULLY CRAFTED MASTERPIECE
Holy moly. Sorry for the huge delay on my response, but this is AMAZING! I read Hicks’ biography back in high school, inspired to learn more about him from seeing him and his name in this album. Went on to listen to all his released standup albums and absolutely adore his blindingly pure voice and cutting wit. Now I want to listen to the whole album again, bookended by Hicks. ❤️Thank you so much.
@@GIVEPAUSEhobby Yeah my man. TOOL has been the largest portion of my life's soundtrack since '93. Side note: I also have a pretty crazy interpretation of their song "Pushit." If you haven't already heard it, I strongly recommend "Pushit." Specifically, the live version off of their album, "Salival." That'd be a great reaction to do
The 3 musicians make most of the music on there own and present it to Maynard. Then he puts lyrics to it and they work out the kinks. And yes I saw a few shows from the lateralus tour and the whole band hugged afterwards. So yes they’re huggers
OMG ❤️ for the hugging
And thanks for the info on the process! It’s so incredible, I really want to dive down the rabbit hole of their production pipeline while Kate takes the musical rabbit hole 🎼🤓
Can't believe 46 and 2 is about your level's of conciseness and the Shadow being part of it. Shit blew my mind watching some deep dive into the lyrics on UA-cam. I feel my brain working every time i hear it.
I love that aspect of Tool’s songs, always something to think about (or, in my case, to misunderstand, haha)
@@GIVEPAUSEhobby meant 46 and 2 not The Pot.
Really enjoyed your reactions. Can't wait for the next one. Love for you to do Descending or Lateralus next (very inspiring songs), different again from the first two songs you've done.
Thanks so much!! Can’t wait to get to more songs soon!
As far as im aware, Tool has never given out lyrics for any song/album. This forces the listener to LISTEN.
Totally fair!
From interviews, it seems as though Justin, Adam and Danny put all of their parts together as an almost finished product before Maynard adds his vocals...Part of the reason they had 10+ years between their most recent albums was because they kept sending him stuff, he would start his process and then they would send him something different and he would have to start over. Maynard spends most of his off time tending to his vineyard in Arizona, since the other members of the band live elsewhere it's easier for them to do it this way. Plus they are all over 50 years old, they've got their process dialed in by now. Can't wait until she is ready to hear Third Eye and Rosetta Stoned. Two of my absolute favorites. Spiral Out...
Man, what an amazing work pipeline. Thanks for watching and commenting, I’m definitely looking more into this before the next video!
I want to hear Kate-the-choir-teacher's comments on Maynard's singing posture in the live performance of Sober. From a choir perspective he does everything wrong/backwards and it still ends up great.
Yes!!
Oh don’t worry, we’ll get there!!
Really fun reaction. Thanks to both of you for taking the time to put this out.
Thanks so much for the watch and for the kind words! Working on the next one that should be out this Thursday!
FYI, the EP is called "Opiate". "Undertow" is their first full album. Keep going down the rabbit hole!
Oh right! Brain fart moment, thanks!
Welcome back Kate. 👍🏻🌀🤘🏻
It was so fun filming our follow-up episode! Already looking forward to the next one!
Loved the reaction.
Vicarious, please.
Thanks so much! I’m gonna work one song per album first and then we’ll probably double back for more (there’s just too many great songs!)
YYEEEESSSSSS!!!!!! More Tool vidoes PPLLLEEEAAASSSEEE. Subbed on the strength of this. ❤
Thank you so much!! Definitely more tool coming! Not right away… someone different from Old Lady Kate first, but then more Tool, I promise!
Kate's going to absolutely lose her mind on Lateralus. Also will likely enjoy the Grudge moment that makes most people go ???.
Hahahaha, there’s so much great music for her here!!!
All Tool albums didn’t have the lyrics in the album books…..they made you do the work to research it for yourself. They actually finally put the lyrics on the newest album “Fear Inoculum”….
By the way the…if you can get your hands on the “Fear Inoculum” album it will blow your mind on the art and detail that went into it. It comes with a LED screen….you basically have a spiritual experience watching it✨✨✨
What!? I need to check out the physical album I guess! I’ve only seen the designs in digital format, I guess I’m missing out!
Good video, rich on information and entertaining, keep having fun like that^^
By the way: Maynard for example is a big wine-nerd, has vineyards and makes wine himself.
Greetings from Germany
So glad you enjoyed it, and WOW! Greetings from America! I wish my four semesters of high school German left me with anything useful, but unfortunately my passable German back then is fully kaput at this point, haha. Das tut mir leid :(
Maynard moved to Arizona to make wine but still owns an apartment in LA for when he has to do business or band related business since all his bands are LA bands. Danny Carey lives in Malibu, Adam Jones lives in the Laurel Canyon area of Los Angeles., Justin Chancellor used to live in the Topanga Canyon area of Los Angeles not far from Adam Jones. I can’t disclose their addresses for obvious reasons. My point is that it’s been common for the 3 musicians to rehearse usually in a store where Justin and his wife operated a musical store. When they are done with the music they contact old sour pussy in Arizona to come to LA where Maynard then goes to his bougie apartment and can be seen driving his coveted smart car.
Tool did not include lyrics in any of their albums because they wanted us to pay attention and figure it out for ourselves. Also , Mom=
That’s fair, every track is a beautiful work of art, so encouraging listeners to dive in and try to live in the space for themselves is an understandable aim. For our purposes, I think we’ll still use the lyrics to get the most bang for our buck (some overall soundscape some lyrical message)
@@GIVEPAUSEhobby I was not trying to suggest that you do not use the lyrics i honestly recommend using the lyrics , Remember when Tool first started making music there were no lyrics , there was no internet. Figuring out the music back then was up to you and whatever illicit substance you chose to partner with. lol
Amazing reaction! So good to have a toolhead around! You got a new sub! More Tool, please! 🌀🌀🌀🙏🙏🙏
Thanks for the watch and for the sub!! Oh, there’ll be more Tool for sure! I’ve started brainstorming other groups to introduce to her but we’re sticking with Tool for now!
Yes more Tool please!!!
Oh, there will be more! I promise!!
The reference to "Mom" in the song is actually about Mother Nature.
Yep, we got there eventually (thanks to all the comments). Thanks!
Love your reactions!
Thank you so much!! More incoming!
26:00 you mention being nerds and loving tea, but fun fact: Maynard has his own winery.
We _need_ to get some Maynard wine for one of the videos!!
Loving your tool reactions!
Thanks so much!! We’ve been loving making them!
Keep going! They have so many awesome punky songs 🤗
I’m so excited to keep the Tool Train rolling!!!
Maynard owns a winery, lmao. Not sure about the scones, but he's definitely 'worldly'.
Haha, he sure is! But also, if “Maynard Scones” suddenly showed up in the stores, I’d hop right on board, haha
Ahh Yess!! OLK is back!! Great choice, way to just let her have it. Go Undertow next with "Prison Sex" do some research on it and enjoy!!
You guys listened and what an amazing reaction !!!
Just FYI ive always wondered if they also have a group chat.
ADAM: Hey guys got a new car today
Danny: Engine size?
Justin: Cheers Mate 🍺 You guys ever heard of Fibonacci?
MJK: SEND ME THE FUKIN MUSIC ALREADY 😡
😂😂 🌀 🌀
Hahahahaha, I love this version of the Tool group chat so much, hahaa
Great reaction! Subscribed
Thanks so much!! New one coming soon!
Right in Two. I have spoken
Haha, possibly! I have responded.
Rambled a little and went on a couple tangents that made this very long for a reaction video. Cut the time in half. Glad to see more people getting into Tool. Mom is mother nature. And Arizona Bay is the new coast line that would be created if the bottom half of California broke off at the San Andreas fault.
I mean, here’s the deal: we’re both talkers. I know there are shorter reaction videos o it there, but we’re having a blast with this, so for the time being, I’m not gonna overly edit the videos down. I _will_ however always put in time stamps for folks to skip over the talking they don’t want to sit through, though.
Thanks for the watch!
@@GIVEPAUSEhobby it's all good. Do what makes you happy. It's your channel. Just my opinion but I honestly think it reflects the general UA-cam community because it's a fact that the shorter a UA-cam video is, it generally gets more views. That's why all these stupid TikTok shorts have millions of views. Someone can sit there for 20 seconds and watch someone do something stupid but it takes a lot to get someone to stick around for a half hour. The majority of UA-cam viewers get on from their phones to pass the time also. Most people don't sit in the living room and bring up UA-cam. You mentioned being excited that your Tool video had drastically more views than your board game videos. Whether you monetize or not, I'm just putting my two cents in to get more views. If you don't care about views then just do you. Good luck!
Thanks dude, I do appreciate it! Yeah, I’m in a constant state of flux when it comes to series ideas and production strategies, so maybe we’ll at least try out some shorter OLKR peppered throughout, we’ll see!
Love this song, still just as true over 25 years later 🤣🤣🤣 come on Mom(Mother Nature) do your best to LA lol hopefully the citizens…..
LEARN TO SWIM
Haha, so mëtäl. No autocorrect, that’s _not_ what h meant to type; so metal. There!
Mom=Mother Nature
Me=thankful
Keep her going on tool ladder here is one of the new songs on the latest album calling voices and see her response very interested in that I think she would really get into that keep up you got a good channel started definitely paying attention always Kuzz.
Thanks so much!! And thanks for the idea! Honestly, the hardest thing is just figuring out what to react to next! There’s SO much I want to introduce her to in just Tool land, and I want to expand to other bands as well… I have a long-term project on my hands :)
Culling voices...
@GIVEPAUSEhobby get her into A Perfect Circle and Puscifer...
The Mom referenced is Mother nature.
Fair! But we’re gonna lump in actual moms too because we’re pro-mothers at GPH haha
Space? Haha... Guess we won't see OLK on a Twilight Imperium review!
Hahaha, probably not! Though she doesn’t hate _all_ space-themed stuff, only the realistic stuff (and obviously the thought of actually _being_ in space).
No lyrics within any of Tool's CD jewel cases. They were (or Maynard was at least) pretty adamant that the music should be heard first without the distraction of trying to read and decipher the lyrics in real time.
Totally can understand this perspective. It’s a remarkable combination of all the voices within the group (both instrumental and vocal)
No lyrics in tool CD booklets until Fear Inoculum
Yeah, in retrospect that makes sense… given the fact that Lateralus was all in that clear plastic for the cool layered artwork.
@@GIVEPAUSEhobby which blew me away at midnight on 15th May 2001, at Echo Records, High Street Christchurch, New Zealand. It was a full 16 hours prior to the U.S. release, yet a current bookFace friend of mine in Ohio says he and the record store guy got stoned on the Sunday his time, a few equivalent hours earlier here.
Yes
Agreed
I couldn't see what was on the back of the record, but it might be fractals, since I know Tool likes to use those in some of their artwork.
Ooh, I think you’re exactly right. I think maybe “mandala” wasn’t the right word I was searching for, or maybe it is, since those can definitely have a fractal-esque appearance.
Tip to not crack or scratch the CD case. Open it from the hinge side
Dude, genius.
My "go to" guitar covers for Tool songs are by Cameron Winters. And for bass covers I go to LeoBassCovers. :D
Thanks for the leads!
Are these Tool reactions blowing up or sth? ;)
Best wishes to you! :)
Dude! They’re blowing up more than I ever felt possible, hahaha. I mean, board games are still at the heart of the channel, but this has been a super fun side project that would up netting more views than… the vast majority of my BG vids combined, hahaha
'Mom' is Mother Earth btw.
Oh, haha, given the rest of the lyrics, that totally tracks 😂
tool .... the reason we have ears 46 & 2 parabol/a right in two wings pt 1/2 descending the grudge of course lateralus and a bunch more. enjoy
Hahaha, what a reason to have ears indeed! Yeah, we have _so_ many other Tool greats to check out!
Spiral out! Keep going!
Will do!!! 😊🌀
Awesome just awesome.
Thanks so much! Honestly, I’m biased as heck, but I was thinking the same thing the whole time we filmed and I edited 😊
I appreciate both of your sincerity.
That means a lot, thank you so much. We’re having so much fun with the series, and my list of To Do Tracks is ever lengthening because of it!
Tool army reporting for duty...spiral out!
Thanks so much for tuning in!
FUN ❤
Hard agree!! 😊
No shade on moms. Bit I believe he's referring Mother Earth here.
Totally understandable given the rest of the lyrics. Thank you!
Right in Two, Lateralus, Pneuma(drum cam),
All awesome options 😊
I've Karaoked this one twice, apparently I'm pretty good at it
Ooh, nice! I’m not sure which tune I’d choose if I were to karaoke one… 🤔
@@GIVEPAUSEhobby twice, my girlfriend has serenaded me by 'okeing Closer by NIИ, with all the naughty lyrics. The first time at a bar whose staff had no idea such a vulgar track was in their list
For many, me included, it's much prefer to listen organically the 1st few times, no lyrics, so as to not be distracted by trying to 'keep up' or 'understand' what you're reading...Simply listen to the audio and let the music flow over you! Maynard uses his voice as an instrument so it carries a lot more weight than the lyrics alone. That's my opinion of course...
This is sage advice for sure. Obviously I’m flying a bit in the face of it with our format, but I’m inclined to agree with your assessment (I just wanna deliver the piping hot first feels from Old Lady Kate, haha)
Wtf i want a 10k Days vinyl 👁️👄👁️
This was exactly my face, hahaha. We feel quite lucky to have received this, let me tell you!
The only CD Tool offers lyrics is Fear Inoculum
Right on, thanks!
More tool pleez
Will do!
🤘🏻🌀
Oh, we fully 🤘🌀👍 now!
The Tool Army would like to see more Tool reactions… please
Hahaha, working on it!
Next 46 and 2
SUCH a good song.
It's a bootleg vinyl. 10,000 days was mevwr released on vinyl.
Oh dang!! Well that would explain why they said it was so hard to track down, hahaha
I have got a great song for you guys....Kasey Chambers lose yourself Eminem cover...soooo cool and original! Like nothing you are expecting!
Woah! Hmmmm, I’ll have to look into that a bit, thanks!
It's ok. Maynard has tattoos too, LOL.
Huzzah!
CDs still exist, where’s the old lady?
We know, we still have many of our CDs; we just don’t keep our CDs out and grabbable these days. As to the second question, not sure how to respond but thanks for the watch!
Maynard has a lot of tattoos now...
Haha, is too!
If she liked the pot then she would like vicarious!
Actually I think I played that one in the car for her shortly after the reaction video, and she totally did!
Tool songs are long on paper
And short as hell when they end.
Dude, well said. 100%
too much chat
Right on, lots of other react vids to choose from. We’re gonna wander wherever the music leads us. Cheers.
Ur not an old lady Kate ! What late 30s yearly 40s maybe? No need to say. Ur when u proudly tell ur age. Like me! 67. I freely admit I was turned on to them by my younger coworkers along with Incubus, etc. Beings a professional musician, and audiophile I was immediately intrigued by being able to hear the bass guitar in the mix, that's usually the first place recording Engineers screw up. The base was prominent in the mix and the sound quality from the CD was shocking this is well produce an engineered so that shows the level of perfectionism out of the band there up there with the greats like Rush Dream Theater if you don't check them out be prepared to be blown away, yes, Genesis, King Crimson, Supertramp even the CD jacket the record everything about tool is there into every detail they want the best, best songwriting best composition, not just the ability to play your instrument but to compose the intricacies of this band they're all on different polyrhythms and at times they meet and joined forces but even Maynard's vocals as The Hip Hop Community would call call it make yes and then stabs with his vocals just like a progressive instrument period of Highly technical band that wants to give everything to their fans 100% and believe me they don't call hit back the Tool Army for nothing if you in any wayslightTool they'll set you straight don't get to upset with worked up about any comments some tool. fan throw at you it's just their passion and love of this band and it goes both ways both the band members and the audience are almost like a cult like the old Grateful Dead faithful. It's because of this undying passion between the audience and the band why they reached the such Heights. I have to say that Dream Theater if you don't know about them you are missing out. Thoughtful insightful lyrics along with impeccable musicianship these guys aren't just you know a garage . If you have any musical training or Voice or choir that would help with a number of these bands that are listed, you can also throw in Kansas there as a incredible man with Words and Music. Sorry for talking so long. Peace out.best way to explain Tool is Tribal!
First bass player quit because they practiced too much ❤
I mean, I _get_ it. As a band director, I know full well you don’t get to sounding like that without a _lot_ of work, haha
No, the cd didn't have any lyrics. Just a dry, clinical dissertation on anesthesia, ending with nihilism.
Fair. Totally tracks, haha
Mother Earth not Mommy
Thanks! Learn something new every day (or in this case, the same thing every day through comments, haha). But yeah, did not know this before, but definitely do now :)
Learn to swim.
See you down at Arizona Bay, my dude!
In Australia our most famous Jimmy is probably a first nations musician. Which given the sad attitude so many Australians have towards these people is impressive.
