OMG I immediately want to play through my own series of encounters!! How have you done so far?? And yeah, glad the video helped out with the Vagabot, it’s a bit unintuitive until it clicks, and then I’ve found the “moves when necessary” concept is really elegant. Only problem is when the hot makes a bad call and exhausts nearly all it’s items (or literally all of them) to move somewhere only to be too tired to actually do anything once they arrive, haha

@@GIVEPAUSEhobby Hi 😊 I would love to share facts from the encounters, so far I have been playing with the Vag in the last four games and have mostly been dealing with aggressive characters like Ranger and Arbiter. In the last game, the Arbiter rule got wrongly interpreted but I realized that it did not affect the game much, he was involved in an arbitration between the Riverfolk defender and Lizard, but after lending my swords I immediately put myself into infamy with the lizard which was not supposed to happen right? After all, he is only arbitrating in a conflict and not participating in one directly. Anyways the most kills are rendered by the Marquis and the Lizards and the dominance levels in the area are also credited to them as well. However, in the recent game, I have changed my fraction to the Marquis because Marquis has the most challenging gameplay but am only trying to hold my position against the pesky Lizards and not doing much to move ahead in the game. The Lizard convert option is surreal and pretty much handicaps the other players with their pawns. But on the brighter side, I won the last match with the Arbiter with aggressive tactics, there is no stopping a vag with infamy, wicked! Love to share more details with you. And one more thing I am planning to label the Autumn forest with tags with places from my place just to make it feel personal 😄

One more thing as per the law of Root, vag would go to infamy with others in their own turns, does it mean that if they are attacked outside of their turn they do not change their relationships? Secondly, does the Infamy law only occur in my turn, for e.g., if I remove an enemy warrior outside of my turn, then I would not receive the infamy bonus? I am confused there, I made a couple of mistakes with that rule, however, one can never too near to being a master in this game 😅

@@GIVEPAUSEhobby Yes I also found a couple of instances where the bot made wasteful moves just to meet its action requirements and didn't do anything when it reached the target clearing with the target player simply because they exhausted all their items by then, but as per the law of the Root bot, the target player having the highest points are attacked, does that mean if the vagabot with the clearing he/she is in currently has the second highest point fraction present, do they attack them instead or they make the silly move action to reach the clearing with the highest point fraction as usual?

Not meaningless at all, “most buildings” is the initial deciding variable for figuring out the defender of the Battle action. The tiebreakers below only come into play if there are two different players both tied for most buildings in the clearing. The reason “even zero” is included is to ensure opponent factions in Eyrie clearings aren’t magically immune to Battle just because they don’t have buildings (ie if the “most buildings” is zero buildings, then we check the tiebreakers below and someone’s still getting roughed up… but the birds just wanna ensure that anyone WITH buildings gets roughed up first… cuz you know, rampant and toxic expansionism)

@@GIVEPAUSEhobby thanks for quick response. Let me ask it this way. Are we supposed to decide the clearing or the “defender”(faction) first? That is what the rulebook leaves out in place of the quoted sentence above.

My assumption (that I have been playing with) is just to completely ignore the sentence about the defender having the most buildings, and instead choose CLEARING FIRST, and then go to clearing tie breakers, then once clearing has been determined, pick DEFENDER SECOND and go to the defender tie breakers if necessary. This is how the rules should be laid out if that is the intended aim, and even if I am playing it wrong, I would imagine the difference to be negligible. Still, I hope eventually people will reach some kind of consensus on this because no one has asked it anywhere on here, reddit, or BGG as far as I can tell. Thanks

In the creation of these teaching videos, when I've reached out to the original designer of the ROOTbots Benjamin Schmauss, one of the well-worn pieces of advice that has proven to be the most beneficial in my use of these bots (and has guided the creation of these videos) is to take the writings on the board and the rulebook literally. If something is written before something else, that in and of itself is a direction of priority; the boards have limited space, so not everything can be doubly-explained when it can otherwise be assumed to take place in the order it's written. In the case of the Bird Battle, I think a consensus is pretty well reached, as it's how it's laid out on the card and in the rulebook. For each column (each suit), they will battle in a matching clearing against the player with the most buildings (including zero). That sets the stage for where it will take place and who they will target. Down below, the tiebreakers are presented in that order as well (and how the more detailed instructions are laid out in ROOTbot par. 5.5 III a-e). So in order, the robo-birds will... Look for a clearing matching the current suit with bird warriors and enemies. Assuming there is one, check the clearing tiebreakers to decide between multiple options of clearings of that suit. Once the clearing has been found, they target the player with the most buildings (and in the case of a tie, consult the defender tiebreakers). Repeat this process for all columns with order cards in them. As for the "negligible difference" about the order of targeting defending and clearing, it's actually kind of huge. For the birds, priority to their spreading forces is the driving force of threat for other players; it actually doesn't really matter who's in the lead on the points track, the birds will go toe to toe with anyone within their reach, primarily targeting clearings at the outer limits of their zone (due to the "clearings without roosts" tiebreaker) and focusing on build-heavy factions and/or playstyles. Take the robo-lizards as an example of the opposite. For their Conspiracies, you're deliberately told to determine the target player first, and only then figure out the clearing. This is much more reactive to the victory conditions and how players are doing and true to the lizards' play style, much less predictable from an adjacency standpoint. Following the order of operations on which to determine first (player or clearing), the meatbags in the game are provided important information about the bots' priorities. Players can have all the buildings, pieces and VPs they want, so long as they aren't within reach of the birds. But if lizards are in the game, location on the map means nothing, so players out in front on the VP track beware. Hopefully this was helpful. Again, read everything literally. Order of words and steps matters, because a great deal of time and effort was put into paring down the verbiage on the boards to prevent overload. Most of the time this works out just fine, but other times a somewhat vague board instruction requires reading through the Law of ROOTbotics (which in this case does a great job of laying out exactly how these decisions should be made). There are a scant few examples of times when neither of these readings provide fully satisfactory results, which have led to Benjamin's creation of the Director's Cut bot boards and/or my inclusion of PROTIPs and alternate readings in those sections of the rules in my videos.

Hi, thanks for long response. I am going to divide my response in two so we don’t get confused. The first part will be just in regards to how the rulebook is written, the second will be on executing the rules correctly. 1) Do you see how the rulebook saying the defender is the player with the most buildings is confusing in a game with 12 clearings, divided by suit to groups of 4, and divided further by the fact you will only actually battle in one clearing per column of the decree? A player could have 5 buildings on the board, but only one of them is in a fox clearing and you are on the fox battle stage of the decree. On the other hand, there could be a player with only 3 buildings on the board, but all of them are in fox clearings, and fox clearings that have eyrie warriors on top of it, hence battleable. Who is going to be the defender based off this rule alone? Its completely unclear. Luckily we have other rules and context clues to guide us (such as target legaility, etc.) but the sentence alone is more or less meaningless. This is the reason I have been choosing clearing FIRST (and resolving tiebreakers) then defender SECOND (and resolving tiebreakers) and ignoring that sentence. 2) Based off of your third paragraph, I think we are ultimately still playing the exact same (and correct) way in that clearing is indeed chosen before defender is ever considered, and the choice of defender is SPECIFICALLY based off the clearing that has been chosen in the “clearing step”. The rulebook should just simply state that and remove the confusing sentence. Thanks!

Sorry for the huge delay, but it’s actually super easy (and kind of brutal): it says “In an ordered clearing…” so if the order card is bird, that could be in _any_ clearing. You’ll have to look over the whole table to see which breaks the tiebreakers… remember, first you target the player, and only then do you look for the clearing that they’re present in to take the conspiracy against them. So if the order card was bird and you’re moving into Convert, if Cats and Birds are tied for most points at 25 each, you’d first go to the unwritten super secret player tiebreaker (setup order) and target Cats. Then, if Cats are in clearings 1-6, you look for the clearing with the most buildings. Let’s say 1 and 3 both have two buildings and that’s the most, then you use the super secret clearing tiebreaker (1 >>> 12) and you WOULD replace a cat with a lizard in 1, but if the Keep is still there, you’d target 12 instead (because you can’t place pieces into the clearing with the Keep in it).
