On large vehicles where you're already $100+ deep on a single model, or on something like a Kill Team where you're going to put in a lot more detail into everything and customization is critical, I think magnets absolutely have a place. On your random base infantry that makes up 90% of your army, it's overkill.

    • @vincentlinsin6549

First: Do drill with a manual drill
Second: Not everything needs magnets! (meltacharges,cc weapons etc.)
Third: You do not need 2 magnets, a small patch of metal will do fine and is "moldable"
Fourth: if you have problems sorting/keeping the parts - remember ...magnets will stick to.. yea metal! So a small tube of metal/old plates etc. will hold them.
-[if you are a "displayer" its a nice look to have a squad armed and ready infront of a metal part(displate/plate i.e.) as a weapons rack of sorts.]
Fifth: have a dedicated hobby space - even if its just a sidetable - so you can organize better... and once you hit the 100 model mark you should get a display anyway .>
But First an formost is : Have Fun !
I have all my heavy weaps and mech-units (tanks, dreads...) mag'd on my 4k 1ksons army (30/40k) and my wscars (2k atm for 40k).

@@northropi2027 just use a paper hole punch and thin gauge sheet metal. As a bonus you can use that hole punch as a rivet source for your crafting and you can also use the paper dots as coins, piles of treasure, and if you cover a super cheap mini with glue and sprinkle it with the dots you can then paint it gold/Silv/cop for Treasure golems.
Just use sheet metal that has high iron content because high quality stainless steel isn't magnetic.

      @Thergood 3 роки тому +2

@@Ed-ss1uh You just bought some Grey Knights? My advice would be to not stress about it. The most I would do is magnetize 10 Paladins/Terminators. Everything else I would just build out however and proxy the different weapons if needed.
One tip for GK is to paint the tilting plates in different patterns for each 5 man squad. Then you can say "The strike squad with the red tilting plates have falchions, the white tilting plates are halberds, the half red/half white squad have warding staves" or whatever you choose. Gives a built in way for you and your opponent to differentiate when proxying. Can do the same thing with paladins/terminators.

That's a thing I have thought about. Take a Tactical Marine squad, for instance. You field 5 guys, and one of them can take a special or heavy weapon. You decide to give your gunner a plasma gun. Later on, you decide that you want to give your gunner a missile launcher instead. So you buy another box of tactical marines, and build one with a missile launcher. And another with a heavy bolter, and another with a flamer, and so on. You already have the grunts you need for your unit, so you can build the second box entirely as gunners.

Turns out they're incredibly easy to magnetize and I swap out loadouts enough to justify the time investment

Magnetizing has a lot do do with FOMO. "If I build these weapons, I might regret it later because I want to use the other one!" "If I build a Trygon, I won't have a Mawloc!" When I was playing 5th edition, I magnetized my Carnifex with all options and only painted the Screamer-Killer loadout because that's what I needed for the tournament the very next day. I never played him any other way since and the other arms are still safe, but just primed black.
Trust me, you DO have a favourite way of playing. Just equip your stuff that way. Unless magnetization is as easy as the Pyrovore/Biovore, then go for it.

I started collecting January this year and planned to magnetize everything I began, but real fast i realized that wasnt worth the time/effort on basic units, and the results didnt make me happy either. The arms would hold but it wasnt as sturdy as I would like, and I would open my storage carry case and have a few arms lose. Now I only bother with characters or larger vehicle type models as you are. Just too much extra work to end up with 200 magnetized arms in where just keeping them organized/stored is an entire annoyance itself when not once have I yet needed or wanted to swap them out.

I reserve magnetization for expensive models only. Currently the only mini magnetized in my army is my Leviathan Dreadnought (because FUCK getting 6x30$ arm attachments for a ~180$ model three times) and probably going to be my Redemptor Dreadnought (because I don't really want 2, and both the dakka gun and the plasma gun are cool so I'm gonna magnetize that).
In some cases I just couldn't find a reasonable way to magnetize something Like my Baal Predator. Back tank and primary gun would be kind of annoying to switch (as i think the turret shield gets in the way) so I just made it all flamers. It's my Burner Baby.
Other times I just didn't have any real options. My Land Raider is just a normal Land Raider. No other weapon options on the sprue so there's no real customizability. And the only other model that i WANT to magnetize is something i don't have yet (or doesn't have rules. MY SANGUINIUS WHY?), in this case my relic Contemptor Blood Angels Dreadnought.

I would say this is just no question to answer with yes or no. I use to magetize Tyranid models since thy very often come as multi Datasheet Boxes and due to the twist of the "Meta", your winged Hive tyran might not be as good anynore as the regular HT but still way to big to proxy the model.
Though, I agree that it isn't always worth to magnetizue small infantery. Most of the time you can just tell what they are. But even though, if you play turnaments WYSIWYG might be a thing.

a good call is also to use superglue on plastic.
For example. I play(ed before corona) competitive 40k a lot. I know 90% of the time my scout sergeant gets a juicy storm bolter for good measure. Just some well invested points. Howevery, sometimes, when rules change you have to rethink the equip. Or sometimes you are just like 1 stormbolter over the points limit. Good thing, that Bolters and Stormbolters come with their hands on. So i just conected them with superglue. In 1 year i probably switched the scout sergs right hand ranged weapon twice by just breaking it off, giving it 3 good rubs with a file, and glueing one of my aprox. 5000 bolters on instead.
This takes literally no time whatsoever and is way easier than magnetizing a wrist. Same goes for most sergeant/veteran melee weapons. Thunderhammers, power swords, relic blades, chainswords all come with hand on the weapon and the wrist being the connector.
So if the new points update drops and you have to rethink your weapon of choice, just break and re-glue.
Its hard to notice at all. And for everyone who has his priority in playing and is fine with like a "tabletop standard" paintjob its just fine.
Wouldnt do this on display-minis though for obvious reasons.
Can absolutely relate to the dread issue :D Back in 7th i wanted a iron hands dreadnought army just for the cracks. Magnetized everything. But since i ended with a 1.4 meter wall of dreadnoughts, i might aswell have never done it :D if you have 10 standard dreads, you can afford to have all the different loadout, since when you bring them ALL its a fun apo game and weapon efficiency is no factor.

I can say that, Yes, Space Marine Veterans are still in the game.
Personally, I'd probably magnetize some of the vehicle kits like the Land Raider, or Leman Russ if it comes with a few different weapon loadouts. Aside from that, perhaps the weapons for Gravis Armor and Centurion models... and Tau Crisis suits... well... anything Tau that's bigger than the stealth suits.

I’d personally say magnetizing is amazing for 95% of vehicles and large/expensive figures, and pretty “meh” when it comes to smaller ones. Magnetizing a Leman Russ or an Exorcist can give you so much freedom with your loadout, but with smaller figures it’s a lot more work (all those tiny magnets on 10x the figures) for a lot less payout.

  • @ivan_says_hi
    @ivan_says_hi 2 роки тому

Some models like tau crisis suits and tyranid warriors are just a no brainer to magnetize. Warriors have like 4 different melee and ranged options and can take a combination of melee and ranged or be pure melee. If you have like 6 warriors in your army you are talking about hundreds of different models worth of permutations. You would have to be insane to waste all that money and the "display" argument doesn't really hold any water imho.
Plus consider that you don't have to magnetise and paint EVERY option right away. Chances are good that when you bought the kit you already had a good idea of what you wanted to build it as because you like plasma or the current meta heavily favors devourers over deathspitters or whatever. Having the options in the future to go and swap and finish building all their weapons is amazing. Often times GW is allergic to balance so frequently in your codex some options or even units will be stupendously more competitive than others to the point that you would have to be actively throwing a competitive game to include them in your list; and then literally next edition it's flipped on its head where the old hotness is unusable and the old rubbish is now the meta pick. If you can't see that GW wants you to run out and buy the exact same kit 3 or 4 times over the years just to get different options you are blind lmao.
As an avid GSC enjoyer their infantry really sucks for magnets. They are tiny, don't have great connection points unlike space marines, and have a bazillion load out options per model. I dont even bother. I build all the special options where I can and use brood brothers models to fill out my generic autogun/shotgun rank and file. Some squads like hybrid metamorphs or acolytes I've just accepted that I'll have to buy multiple squads or proxy in games when I have to. That's another benefit of SM that all their models except maybe certain mono pose heroes and scout squads are very customizable and give you nice and flat surfaces on their relatively large bodies to drill into.

My favorite use for magnets is fragile models with parts that always seem to break and swapping characters on mounts, which some want to break anyway, so why force a hard attachment point?
Example 1: giant dragons that have a beefy arm attachment, but spindly bits that stick out and break. use more than 1 magnet to hold the arms on, so they hold orientation instead of rotating down.
Example 2: WH Fantasy dark elf army units (in game or as I use them now for D&D) do I want a knight, sorceress, etc on that horse, cold one, or raptor style cold one? (those raptors, especially old style, always seem to loose their knights &/or fall apart)
*alternative to this is to drill and pin only 1 side of that equation, so you can still swap figures.
No fiddly bits. Too much work, as I already like to customize too much to finish things!

Here's what I've done, and continue to do. I can only recommend magnetizing bigger models, that have multiple weapon choices. You wanna swap out out a Baneblades turret for a Tremor cannon? Magnetize that shit. You wanna swap out a Space Marines Heavy Bolter for a Heavy Flamer? Do not magnetize that shit. It's better to magnetize bigger, harder to lose parts, because chances are 1) you won't lose it and 2) you'll probably actually do something with it, instead of leaving it unpainted in your shame drawer.

I magnetized my 40 DW marines because I hate wysiwyg. Didn’t take all that long either. Hell, most of them even got magnetized shoulders so I could swap out for heavy weapons, pistol and chainsword, or regular bolters. Especially on the vanguard vets. The bits box for magnetized weapons and arms is hilarious
And then of course the imperial knight for the treatment as well.

I'm playing Imperial Knights specifically *because* I can easily just magnetize all their options instead of buying and painting a whole new unit every time the rules change. That and the relatively low cost of an entire Knight army vs. other armies make them friendlier to my budget.
Also them being really big means my clumsy, damaged hands won't ruin the assembly or paint too badly, but that's beyond the scope of the discussion.

A very valid point, vehicles and walkers are one thing but troops are another. Barring a special character I just can't see the time/expense/storage work that goes into such a move being worth it in the end. You have to ask yourself the question "how much is my time worth". Take the Space Marine Devastator box, you get enough bits for 6 guys and have 12 heavy weapons but some of them are a real cast iron pain in the cackler to modify correctly and your going to have real fun being able to get full versatility. Now for the little bit of extra cash, less than you will spend magnetizing in the long run, you can pick up a tactical box and have 13 devastators with heavy weapons and a MASSIVE amount of stuff to make the other 3 marines into as well as upgrade other marines with. You have no idea how many crappy marines I upgraded from the waste up with leftover bits and that was before bit sellers and 3rd party sellers. Legs are cheap!

Another thing about magnets: If you do it wrong, they are PITA to remove. I bought a set of pre-owned WarMachine models a while back that were magnetized; I got them very cheap, but the magnets were not strong enough (even though they were doubled and tripled up) to hold the parts securely, and to make the arms and weapons sit flush I had two options: Greenstuff the gaps, or remove the magnets. Since I only plan to resell them, I went with option B - remove the magnets.
Tiny little 1.5mm magnets. How to get them out? They were superglued in place. I looked up "micro hole saws" on eBay, and the closest thing I could find were diamond-coated tools which were too thick. I had to _make_ my own tool. I used an old scriber handle made of very hard steel and filed teeth into it. Amazingly it actually works! I used it to saw down to the bottom on the magnet and then gently rock it out with a pair of tweezers.
Also, be aware that neodymium magnets can be _very_ dangerous to children and pets if swallowed.

I would still magnetise if you play Tyranids... The larger critters at least, as they come with so many weapon options , in most army lists you can only bring one maybe two (like tyrannofex is a heavy support and in a battalion you only get 3 heavy support slots) , they come with 4-5 weapon options but each one costs more than a landraider to buy.... I wouldn't go as far as magnetising it so you can turn it into a tervigon but I would definitely magnetise the main weapon... Or the hive tyrant / swarm lord where you can just magnetise 4 arms to swap between the two variants and save you having to buy another one to be made into a swarm lord... Plus I think painting extra arms is quicker than having to paint two (or three) ENTIRE swarm lord models (and that dude is a big'un). My plan was to have just two, one with wings and magnetised weapons, and one without wings that can either be a swarm lord or a hive tyrant. If you didn't magnetise you would need 2 winged ones and 3 non winged ones if not more , because hive tyrant (winged or not) has so many gun options , anti tank anti heavy infantry anti small infantry..... And they cost £40/$80 each.... And the guns look completely different from eachother... And depending on what army you play against bringing the right gun is extremely important, as Tyranids are among some of the weakest armies and your only way to win is having a perfectly tailored army to what your opponent is playing.... So yeah Tyranid players trust me magnetising is your friend on this one..

Not too fond of magnetising arms, as I usually have a clear idea of what I want to do pose-wise; things like reloding/carried ammo, or painted plasma-OSL don't go well with magnetisation. I do use them on things like sponson weapons on more expensive kits, though, though less frequently main guns, and could very well consider using them if I did more flying units, to avoid breaking flying stems.

The thought of putting all that extra work just for different options on 5-8 point models is crazy. It would almost be less time consuming to work minimum wage to afford more units and outfit them with the different options than it would be to magnetize the 1st unit.
That being said, I did magnetize my Goliath and my Sanctus. For models that you typically only want 1 of, that are expensive and have important options, magnetize is easy and worth it.

Wow. You are using really small magnets. I use 3-4mm large magnets for infantery models and my knights have 8-10mm lagre ones embedded. I always start my magnet hole with a needle, than enlarge it with a sharp scalpel. I never paint the weapons, i don't need, but store them in a small zip-bag for every kind of model. So when the Meta changes, I can just magnetize the weapon I need, paint ist and voila. New loadout without paining a new mini.
