I'm a newb to FPV drones. I have over 30 years in rc choppers. I've watched a lot of videos on how to set these up, but most of them have been very difficult to follow for me. I'm starting out with a Protek R25 HD and I bought a set of DJI Goggles 2 from your store. I'm already looking for another smaller sub 250 whoop type drone and I'll probably get yours. I like the way u guys roll. U don't try to impress everyone by all that u know about drones that confuses the hell out of me, plus I'm 76 and that don't help much either. When I watched this video, I felt like finally I can enjoy watching a build and setup and actually feel that I can do it because u broke it all down so even someone like me could follow. And these wizzards r what I need. Just an excellent and fun tutorial. Thx so much.
First Build Video Ive ever watched. Love LD & RR's other videos but I want to get away from prebuilts and this video convinced me to do so. Its actually super thought out and informative. Feeling more confident with making the decision. Thank You.
For anyone thinking about building this drone, the kit does not come with 20mm m3 screws for mounting the stack. Hopefully this helps. The M2 screws used for mounting the vista do not come with the kit either.
These guys seem to specialize in making the hobby as simple as possible for the new guys. In FPV simplicity costs more, but in the long run you spend less than you would if you bought cheap junk parts that fail and are way more complicated. Time is money. The DJI radio is just fine for most quads. The Vista is simple and works great as a receiver, but if you already have a Crossfire or ELRS this build is still simple and I am sure it’s a blast! How about that 4.3 right? No motor remapping in the CLI or reversing direction in the BL Heli configurator! Like I say simplicity costs money, but buy the quality now. You’ll thank yourself later.
I wanted to follow up with my experience so far. I received the quad in two weeks, the build quality appears solid and even though it’s my first freestyle FPV quad I had it flying in a couple of hours. The USB-C port on the air unit is hard to access and I actually didn’t see it at first. I took the duct off but it might be possible to bend it to the side to plug in. I’ve been flying the DJI FPV in manual mode and flying sims, and it felt very familiar to fly the SkyLite. I was doing rolls and flips and flying around the yard by the 3rd pack. Looking forward to trying it out with the ducts removed!
Carson, I am starting out right now with a dji fpv and was looking at this for something to practice with that can take a beating and be fixed easily. Are you running this build with the goggles v2 and controller 2 from dji?
Best video to do configuration. I have seen many drone build videos but that’s the best one and detailed in a single video. Thanks guys for sharing the best material. Good on you guys. Keep it up. Cheers from Sydney.
Looks like my next frame :) Little hind, if you just put the solder on the iron tip and transfer it from there to the wires / pads +use little bit of flux 280-350C° , there are no sprinkles and you have one more hand . But you need a good combination of speed and right temperature
Brilliant. When I first saw the email come through last night I didn’t think much of it. But after watching this video. I love this concept. Nice work Drew!!! 👏🏽
I know I’m a little late to the party, but I am also old guy 75 and I really want to build these. I built quite a few RC planes in my day, but I don’t know anything about electronics. This video helped me a lot however when I went to website, I don’t see where I can buy this Drone with all the pieces that I need because I would have no idea where to start if I couldn’t buy a package deal and buy package deal I mean I want to build it myself, but I want all the parts. I hope you see this message and respond. Thanks for this video. It was really good.
For smaller capacitors you can place the heat shrink first on the power leads before soldering them so you don’t need to pull xt60 through:) ps. Just checked: 14mm diameter (22mm when flattened) thin heat shrink baaarely fits over an xt60
Drone is sick. Might be my first drone after a whoop. But working with cars every day when you said "like lug nuts on a car" and went in a circle it hurt me inside a bit😂 supposed to go in a star formation😅 love the videos though! Greetings from the Mitten
Blobs of solder flying everywhere, lol, you need to slow down when you remove the tip from the pad. All it takes is one of those blobs to hit the circuit board and it's magic smoke time.
My skyliner needs this little buddy. I was looking for a new 3 inch. I use a cingo with the ducts off, but it's extremely fragile. this looks like a mini tank like the skyliner... I'm in.
I feel like these convertable fpv kwads kinda can't do everything perfect. However this one seems to have been well thought out. I am not sure if sub250g is still a thing with this build, but, it is really dope!
ImpulseRc have a similar kit for the Micro Apex.. It is a lot thinner carbon than the RR one though.. TCPE is a great choice for printing ducts. It is almost unbreakable, ALMOST :)
i just made the same drone with the same parts even the motors because now in rotor riot page they are selling another kind of motor for this specific drone.
Hello Drew, Now that the DJI 03 has come out & RotorRiot is offering this model with that DJI 03 fpv unit, I would love to request another review of this bad boy.... I have the GEPRC Smart35 (Vista Nebula nano HD) which I love but it does not come with the DJI 03 FPV unit in an RTF option... (please note, i also have the DJI AIR Skyliner Unit you built for me, and love that one for the 5inch situations and you have it tuned smooth as butter)... ....so personally it would be really nice to see the side by side comparison between the Skylite DJI 03 unit and the GEPRC Smart35 unit (Vista Nebula nano HD)... Comment: It looks like you might have the only 3.5 inch dji 03 rtf option out there (please someone correct me if im wrong).... Thanks Drew, Jeff
Cool build, my only complaint is I wouldn't suggest using a firmware version that is a release candidate and think it would be better to use the latest stable version 4.2
i guys, a friend of mine bought this drone. With ducts it flew very well and quietly. When he became a bit more confident, he wanted to fly without Ducts and bought appropriate props. Strangely enough, without ducts the copter flies very unsteady and shakes. The motors get very hot. When he puts the ducts back on, everything is back to normal. Does he have to change anything in the tuning without Ducts? Grateful for any tips.
Love to build Fpv and cinematic drone . but I don’t wanna spend so much money on a goggle and a controller.. question ? Does goggle Integra and controller bind and compatible with the drone you built ? If it does ! Please set me up with the website so I could purchase the complete accessory . you guys are great. 👍🥃🥃👌
Damn its been 3-4 years since I've had a drone. But this one really has me intrigued to get a whoop style for my new hero 10. Now before I get too excited do I need to upgrade my goggles and radio to even stand a chance in todays FPV world? I have a Spectrum DX6e and Fatshark Dom V3's. Because it seems everything revolves around the DJI stuff now and im not going to be that invested into the fpv world to want to upgrade to that.
This build, as it is in the video, will require the DJI goggles and DJI controller. RotorRiot has a serious man crush on DJI so all of there builds are centered around it. Perhaps they will offer a build that is analog in the future, but for now this is a digital build.
@@bladezx2 Yeah and thats what I have found is everyone has a crush on the DJI stuff and I get it. Everything you comes across only fits the dji stuff. But its hard because I have no idea anymore or where to look at for a new build using new product analog stuff.

Looks like a decent 3” freestyle frame. Something there are not very many of in the hobby. Nice one @ledrib Anybody know the dry weight of the frame? Looks heavy..
What's the all-up-weight of either configuration (without camera or battery)? Is the frame anywhere close to 50-60g? I'm just wondering how reasonable it would be to build as a sub 250g model.

The tall ducts are much safer when flying around talent and they slow the rig down so that it's more accurate for hitting gaps, they basically keep it from sliding around

Looks like a great 3" for double duty. Wish you offered the kit with no HD unit. Would love to order a kit and add my own ELRS and analog camera/VTX.
Agreed!
I just built one with analog components. All I had to do was add some spacers on each side of the camera and it works perfectly
