My husband wears nail polish. He is straight. I have been a nail polish enthusiast for about 10 years and have a smaller curated collection, but some people would think it's huge. I am suffering from deformations and infections of my nails/toe nails and hair due to kidney disease, but as soon as I have slightly less gross nails I will paint them again. I was given the green light by my nephrologist and a hand specialist.

I’m not the original poster but I’d like to know about how the ingredients of nail polish have changed over time. For example, I remember vividly hating when my mom would paint her nails because it smelled so bad.
I feel like polish used to smell way way worse than it does today. Or else I am just that immune to the smell now. 😂
Perhaps you can also purchase some vintage polishes and swatch them and compare them to modern polishes (as long as it is safe.) if not maybe swatch it on a nail wheel or stick. I know Revlon and L’Oréal have been around forever.
Maybe try to find the oldest Revlon polish you can find and see if you can dupe it in your collection.
Also you can maybe touch in on the history of acrylic nails and dentistry and how the two industries evolved off one another.

@@pleadthefifth yes ingredients is definitely interesting, I found the bottle designs and brushes interesting too, the newer fan brush designs are so perfect compared to the older brushes.

I worked with a guy who said he liked my nail polish because it reminded him of his model car paints, so it was funny that you mentioned that. its wild that we as a species had the desire to have colors on our fingernails for thousands of years.

Loved this! I feel like car paint/nail polish kind of tracks with arsenic making green fabric? Not the same period in history, but tracks in the realm of “before we knew.”

This is such a fun video. I love learning about history. It’s so interesting to hear what nail polish was invented for. It definitely has come a long way. That’s so interesting to learn that relvon was the first nail polish brand and at the same time sad that they don’t make polish like they used to. They made so many fun and iconic polishes. Relvon was one of the first polish brands I bought.

Hi Janixa! This was very interesting and informative. Thank you. You might also enjoy reading Jeff Pink’s book about the creation of Orly and how it got started. As a fellow nail polish enthusiast, I found it very interesting and informative and really adds a personal connection to the brand. 😍

This was such a cool video! That is so crazy to me to think that my first bottle of nail polish came from the very company that created the first bottle of nail polish! That is so cool and so full circle! Definitely please do more of this! It would be really cool to not only have Revlon bringing their nail polishes back more to the forefront but to recreate their first shades that they did back then!

Having stained nails showed wealth and power because you had the disposable time to sit around and do that. also the stain probably looked nice compared to what the working class nails looked like especially depending on the color. I’m sure it was made illegal for working class as to maintain the exclusivity for the upper class

Woah! Dyed egg whites? I would imagine it would smell after awhile lol.
But I am always in awe at how inventive they were back then!
WHAT??? Why are people so annoying? Of course polish stains nails! And then to be rude about it to others?? So dumb.
And wow!! It was illegal for the poor people to wear stained nails?? 🤯
I love the idea that the ancient soldiers used nail polish wore polish to delineate status! That is so cool.
$1.25 in 1870 is around the equivalent of $31 USD today, still a good deal!
Lolol car paint on the nails! Wow I love learning so much!
I didn’t know Revlon was the first nail polish brand either!
This was sooooo cool! Please talk more about this 🤸🏿‍♂️

Fun video topic. It's probably no wonder why only wealthy or royal women could have stained nails, the peasants were busy working and didn't have hours to sit around with their hands tied up. LOL. Hope you do more. Maybe you could do nail trends through the decades?

I bought revlon amethyst smoke as I thought it was a gorgeous duo chrome polish. Later i bought china glaze pondering from an online retailer, and found out they're pretty much dupes for each other, and also dupes for cirque colors tahitian pearl, minus the scattered holo sparkle. Fun fact- revlon owns sinful colors, so technically they're still in the nail polish game, just covertly so. I wondered how such a cheap polish could have such a good formula that actually lasts several days on my nails, which I'm not easy on my hands so a few days is pretty good for me, then I learned that revlon was the company that makes sinful colors and I had my a-ha moment. 💡

    • @naillacquertherapy

    • @ToastontheEastCoast

@@naillacquertherapy I didn't realize. It seems like Canada is at least a year behind on polish releases. I hope they haven't shut down completely, it's hard to find good quality polishes for reasonable prices as it is. Even china glaze seems to be slowing down their releases. 🥺

Yes, but back then the stains were done in a purposeful manner and probably looked a lot different than what we think of as "stained nails". I would go crazy if i had to wear red every day! I really enjoyed this episode and hope you do more. Thank you!
