When I was a kid, my family didn’t have cable. My mom bought this cassette compilation of old cartoons that I watched over and over. This was my favorite cartoon! Even now, as a married woman, I still can’t eat cake without remembering this cartoon.
I can't believe I found this! I used to love it! I was probably 5 when I last watched this. Ocassionally this story will pass through my head, and I would wonder if it was a weird dream I made up. It's been like 20 years now.
I can't believe I found it either! My brother and I always used to watch this as children as well and I've been wondering about it for a long time until I searched and searched for it tonight and found it! It's being saved under my favorites!! This brings back so many memories.. I teared up!
THE SAME THING WOULD HAPPEN IN MY HEAD AND I THOUGHT Just now to finally look for it and I found it!!!! Last time I watched this was when I was like 5-8 yrs old
If this was made in 1936 then it was during the Great Depression... I imagine it gave comfort to many children who watched this back then .... I love it even now
I remember watching this all the time when I was 4 or 5 and the bread the children dunked in their teas(?) looked like the most delicious thing in the whole world to me.. ah good times..
It breaks my heart to watch this cartoon. It makes me feel worse when I know that this definitely can happen in reality and even right in this time in somewhere around the world...
This cartoon is basically telling how bad the Great Depression was. People couldn't find work, had almost no money, and had to get by on scraps they could get off the streets. It was especially hard on women with small children, and this mom was probably a widow. The 1930s were a really touch time in the US.
I'm so thankful for youtube. I can't believe I was able to find this cartoon from my childhood. Very touching story. And I wonder if whomever wrote "willy Wonka" saw this and was inspired to write it haha.
This cartoon every Christmas with my siblings.....I have just been reminded to not lose my imagination, my whimsy, and my childlike heart. Funny how a short cartoon can make such an impact and create such a feeling of wonderful memories. God bless you all and stay children in heart.❤
This has been hidden way deep in my brain for years, I always remembered it as my favourite cartoon when I was 4 or 5, I can’t believe I found it! The bread at the beginning always looked so delicious ❤️
Oh My goodness same!!! I lost the VHS years ago and have been trying to find these little Christmas cartoons for so long! I can’t believe I finally found it!
Oh. My. God. I remember seeing this movie as a kid. Cannot tell you how many times I cried whenever this came on. We had it on VHS, along with some other cartoons... But this was my favorite one.
Can't believe I found this again. It was on a VHS tape of several (about 90+) old cartoons that my Great Grandmother gave to me. So crazy, the nostalgia. The part where you anticipate that the kids are gonna get on those beds, fall asleep, and go back to the real world are still relevant feelings we have today 80 years later. Crazy Stuff.
+Lucii Odum That's a Little Audrey cartoon called "Tarts and Flowers" I think! It's here on UA-cam. Seems like we all had the same sort of vintage combo VHS with all these on them as kids. Ah, Memories!
it makes me sad when i remember that most kids now dont even know what a cd/dvd is much less a vhs i may only be 17 but i remember watching the land before time and kids songs on vhs on an old tv that had the color changing knobs and everything and that was probably only 12-14 years ago
max Fleischer is criminally underrated. and i don't get it. He created the technology shown in this cartoon. to simulate 3D. can you imagine the mindfuck of seeing this in 1936 ??? yet his cartoons are in public domain now and nobody has remastered them. If there was any justice he'd be as known as Disney or Chuck Jones
What a sweet innocent cartoon 😭 I saw this when I was 3! I like to think the mom ended up marrying one of those sweet guys and they became a family and the children had a father to love and support them.
This was my favorite cartoon as a kid beautiful story. But the saddest part for me has always been when the little boy says MOM IM STILL HUNGRY♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡
Watched this with my sister on vhs in the 80s when we were little. She died in a car wreck in 1997 at age 15. Love you sis and I know we'll be reunited soon!
Oh man its been i believe made 15 years since i last saw this on an old VHS my parents had when i was a kid this brings back so many good memories of when i was a youngin
Watching this when Christmas is on its way is just depressing. The moment that really got me was when their blankets were more like nets! I think God was happy when someone made this to remind us of the plight of the poor...and happy when LasyDuckify uploaded it :)
Im a 13 year old girl, but I swear that I remember this when I was 6! It's been a long time and I used to love this one so much! The food looked so delicious and I pitied the poor children
This cartoon lives in my brain rent free since I was little. I have no idea why this specific cartoon has hung around so long. My husband was playing Cuphead and it reminded me of it (art style...time style...you know what I mean) and started describing it to him. I had to google to see if I could find it and I did!
Love that a videogame could jog your memory, really reminded me why this was my favorite era of animation, so detailed and charming with it's characters and music, these cartoons will live with us forever.
My grandma would play this for me when I was kid along with little Audrey, I think it was from thise mother goose vcr tapes, I've watched this like 20 times and I lived it.
I remember seeing this cartoon as well and I was wondering if I would see it again and behold, I found it. I love the old cartoons because these cartoons are so real compare to the current cartoons now.
Thank u so much for saving this and sharing. really made my heart melt. I have 6 brothers and 2 sisters & we had tough times. I remember this movie as a poor child. Really Warmed my heart back then......you can only imagine how it makes me feel today. I sure love my Momma ♡ Thank you ♡
Oh my God. I remember watching this cartoon on TV in Serbia in the early 2000s. I grew up like that, and sadly, a lot of serbian children still live like this in 2019. Nothing changed. Used to love this cartoon ❤
I remember watching this when I was little and not understanding what it was about. I thought it was just everyone's dream but I always had those things and wanted an excess and they didn't have anything and wanted at least a little and seeing this now makes me so grateful!
Pulling all the heart strings with this cartoon that has always been close to my heart from my childhood. And even after over 20 years, I can still remember the words to this song. May we all never lose sight of the meaning behind this, and always hold on to that inner child in us all❤️
omg i was thinking of this the other day and wondered if i could ever find it! thank you for posting it! i used be so scared watching this but now i love it!
I remember a lot when I watch this. All those days I spent watching this wonderful cartoon 😍. As a kid and even now in 20 , I still love this cartoon. 💔💔😢😢😍
I had this on VHS as well! I can't believe I found this... This was my favourite one to watch... That and "The Kids in The Shoe". I'm definitely finding a way to keep this to show my future kids what I grew up watching!
Until now, I hadn't heard this song/short in years! And I still remember it. This was on a VHS tape which had a lot of different shorts, but I don't remember any of them except this one. When I was younger, I watched it simply for entertainment, and didn't noticing how sad it was... Thank you so much for sharing :)
Kids today don't know how truly blessed they are!! Imagine this was the reality for some kids working from the age of four and for some kids across the world this is still their reality. xx
Thank you so much for uploading this cartoon. My sister and I use to watch this all the time and re-enacted the parts...especially the part where he pokes himself with the fork.
i love this little cartoon. saw it on a cartoon compilation VHS from my grandma. always stood out to me and i come back to watch it for fun from time to time!
I remember seeing this cartoon on tv when I was very young (50s/60s). Even as a child I found myself crying. I've never forgotten it! Glad I rediscovered it here! Also interesting from a technological perspective with use of the rotoscope!
OMG!!! My brother and I grew up watching this VHS all the time of this cartoon. Its 30 years later and we still talk about this cartoon ...I thought to go on the internet to see if I could find it on UA-cam and I DID!!! best memories!!!🤗💕
This cartoon, along with the talking magpies and the Betty Boop one with the kids in the orphanage was a compilation my twin sister and I would watch every Christmas when we were younger. Been almost 30 years since I've seen it last. The nostalgia is heavy with this one and the feels.. going to introduce this to my daughter as well to keep the tradition alive.
My grandpa got an old cartoon collection on VHS when I was a kid and this was on it. It makes me remember the nights I spent at my grandparents as a kid. Man I miss him and those days of innocence. I didn't have a care in the world and was loved unconditionally.
Today's children couldn't imagine how tough were the old times...See this make me feel sometimes sad, sometimes joyful for remember my childhood sitted in front of my b/w T.V...Children have lost the innocence of this beautidul animation....
When I was a kid, my family didn’t have cable. My mom bought this cassette compilation of old cartoons that I watched over and over. This was my favorite cartoon! Even now, as a married woman, I still can’t eat cake without remembering this cartoon.

THE SAME THING WOULD HAPPEN IN MY HEAD AND I THOUGHT Just now to finally look for it and I found it!!!! Last time I watched this was when I was like 5-8 yrs old

Joyce Szalucka Thanks!!Merry Christmas to you as well!!!
It breaks my heart to watch this cartoon. It makes me feel worse when I know that this definitely can happen in reality and even right in this time in somewhere around the world...
I had the exact same feeling 😔😔.
Wish people were more non-materialistic in our generation and simply be thankful for what they already have.
This cartoon is basically telling how bad the Great Depression was. People couldn't find work, had almost no money, and had to get by on scraps they could get off the streets. It was especially hard on women with small children, and this mom was probably a widow. The 1930s were a really touch time in the US.
Not to mention the ad to the children have they are such sweet children
So true.
Yes, unfortunately...We take everything for granted & live like we are here forever, we need to wake up before it's too late. God bless us all.
I'm so thankful for youtube. I can't believe I was able to find this cartoon from my childhood. Very touching story. And I wonder if whomever wrote "willy Wonka" saw this and was inspired to write it haha.
you mean Roald Dahl?
Brian Delacruz I thought the same thing!

I think it's the message of kindness and hope that makes it stick with us, all these decades later.

The part where you anticipate that the kids are gonna get on those beds, fall asleep, and go back to the real world are still relevant feelings we have today 80 years later. Crazy Stuff.
do you think you remember the video after this, when a girl married a Ginger bread man
+Lucii Odum That's a Little Audrey cartoon called "Tarts and Flowers" I think! It's here on UA-cam. Seems like we all had the same sort of vintage combo VHS with all these on them as kids. Ah, Memories!

A classic, lovely, beautiful and criminally underrated short from the old days. Still brings a tear to my eye whenever I watch it.
max Fleischer is criminally underrated. and i don't get it. He created the technology shown in this cartoon. to simulate 3D. can you imagine the mindfuck of seeing this in 1936 ??? yet his cartoons are in public domain now and nobody has remastered them. I watched this every year on Christmas Eve when I was a child, Christmas isnt Christmas without it.
My sister and I watched this as children. This was in the 2000s so we didn't know the historical context. It's even sadder to watch it now as an adult

Watching this when Christmas is on its way is just depressing. The moment that really got me was when their blankets were more like nets!
