I'm 44. I foam roll and stretch every morning, and most evenings. I run 5 times a week, with some weight training 3 times a week. I get to skate about 4-5 times a week, fully padded with a helmet all the time. It hurts a lot less. I think squats can definitely help with the strength/balance needed when getting into trick position. I've started incorporating them into my routine with kettle bells.

For me it's mostly ankle mobility. I was so worried about my knees based off the health of the men in my family that I didn't even notice my ankles are the joints getting stiff and giving me problems. I'm more worried about joint health over muscles flexibility at this point. Sometimes my feet & ankles don't like those impacts. I got an electric foot massager for really cheap off of Amazon I use a few times a week, I think it helps keep my feet loose. I go to a chiropractor when I can remember to. Glucosamine & Omega 3s are good for joint health, but I'm trying to increase the fat content in my diet; it's good for joint health & energy.

I’m 45 and just started skating again last summer. Like a 25 yr break. I’ve never been a daily skater or taken it seriously tho till now. I went through a few months of constantly having at least 3 pulled muscles at all times and I was stretching before my sessions. I finally went to a physical trainer and was shown new stretches that go way deeper than what I was doing. Also, I do them 2x a day. And a kinda throughout the day. I immediately started feeling better and those pulls are gone and have much more strength! I thought I was done for but now feel better than ever just after a couple weeks.

Jack Howard hey man, so all the stretches focus on upper and lower calf’s and hamstrings. I’m not sure how to describe all of them but there’s downward dog and then some variations of that by bending one knee and leaning into that side. There’s pigeon pose and variations. The a few where you lay on your back and you use a strap to wrap around the ball of one of you feet while you raise your leg up keeping your knee straight. You can pull tighter and raise the leg higher or lower to change which part of the muscle to focus on. There’s a few more but they actually all can be done thru basic yoga poses. It’s just doing them consistently is the key!

Here is a tip for all of you: Go to Luan Oliveira's Instagram stories under "work outs". Those are some of the best exercises I have seen for skateboarders. Lot's of core, legs, stretches, explosive strength (to get that pop and handle impact) decompression (skating compresses the spine). I have my own little routines that I do using some of the stuff I learned from the Brazilian pros and combined with some traditional stuff. Squats, deadlifts, walking lunges, planking, etc.

Getting back into skateboarding is no joke. Just becasue you were able to do it easly in your teens and early 20's don't think you can still pull it off. Is been years since I skated seriously and once I actually picked up a board again it absolutly killed me. I wanted to skate a lot so I can get back into it as fast as possible and I payed the price. I was so freakin sore the next day, something I never felt not even when I was consantly going to the gym. Once the body was less sore,I ren into some lower back issues that wouldn't go away for days, everytime I wanted to skate harder and longer. So my advice would be,get into it slowly, stretch and take it seriously as if you are doing a serious sport. Just putting your board down and start ripping after years of not doing it will probably not happen on it's own.

  • @rahGrebelsoulsound

The older you get, the easier you get injured & the more serious you have to be abt taking care of your body. I'm 47 w/ a fam, work, all of that & I still try to skate at least a couple times a week. But in order to do that, I have to do a serious disciplined stretch routine & calisthenics workout 2x a day. Otherwise, some stupid injury, that I used to recover from in 24hrs or less, will plague me for days or weeks.
I do a 20 min Qi Gong routine, 10 min Kung Fu warmup (dynamic stretch) routine & a 15 min calisthenics workout, 2x a day (morning & evening). If I have time, I also like to go to the pool & do laps.
It's a super low impact endurance workout that's easy on my old bones.

You’re going to get all the older guys like me tell you that in your 30’s you have no idea 🤣 but honestly you are so right to be thinking about it now. I’m 42 and I wish I had taken my body condition more seriously 10 years ago I might be in better shape now.
I’m finding a 10 minute UA-cam yoga session every morning is helping me massively especially the hip opener exercises.
I had no idea how little hip flexibility I had until I pulled something a while back and started doing the yoga. After each 10 minute yoga session every morning I feel a million times better and I’m slowly gaining more flexibility in my whole body.
It’s also very therapeutic for the mind so I’m highly recommending Yoga.

What your friend just said is so true... Your body has to be able to take slam and a good way to achieve that is to stay fit and skate often!
The obvious, eat health and exercise is a big part of it. Skateboarding at older age is a huge mind game. Accepting your body limitations and weighing the risks is crucial.
Injuries can take a long time to heal. I’m off the board for 6 months now and I have at least another 5 before I can get back on it again. Missing it like crazy!
So doing the best to stay healthy and fit is the only way to carry on skating for longer.
Made a video a few months ago about my personal experience dealing with injuries and skating at older age but you covered pretty much everything as well!
    Great video Zack! ✌️✌️✌️

I think the slamming part is right too. Ate shit twice last week and laughed it off because of how naturally I'm able to take a fall.

Skating forever tricks from a 36 year old: decide, wich ones are helpful ;-)
    a) since i started i was not very ambitious. so i keep my niveau easily.
    b) i always loved bonlesses footplants and stuff like this, where you can make "coffee brakes" and rethink if you will finish the trick or not. ;-)
    c) of course Yoga and pilates and stuff like that is good! flexibility training and streching is important (freestyle contests in my youth teached me to be flexi)
    d) better dont get fat with beer, fries ... like me. :-(
    e) fall in love with just rolling around, doin snakeruns, carving, pumptrakcs; enjoy the little things, feel rhythm of your wheels surfing your sidewalk. So if you are not able to do cool tricks anymore, you dont loose your passion skating.
    f) keep constantly rolling. keep in touch with your board!
    g) remember: the best skater is always the one, that have the most fun! :-D
    h) watch zack dowdys vids and get creative with his DIY spot Ideas! :-)

I'm 41. I don't typically stretch before a skate, but I do ease into the session with some pushing around and basic tricks. I live in PA and I have to acclimate to the weather. That plays a big role. I'm also a sweaty guy, not big or out of shape, just sweaty. When summer first roles in, the warmer days keep me off the board. I'd rather skate when it's 45°. lunges(reverse, lateral, etc), squats, Romanian deadlifts, good mornings, box jumps, depth jumps, leg and knee raises, jumping rope for cardio, and calf raises are just a few things that will help your skating. stretch everyday before and after your workouts, getting a goodnights sleep is the best way for your body to recover from a hard day of skating or training. difference between dynamic stretching and static stretching is dynamic is controlled movements to get blood flowing to your muscles and static stretching is focusing on a particular part of the bodies ligament and joints attached to that muscle.

  • @RodneySloan
    @RodneySloan 3 роки тому +1

My dudes, ankle raises. Lift up on your toes, while standing straight up, as high as you can. You should feel it in your ankles. Do 3 sets of 10, then some ankle rotations. Works great and protects you from rolled ankles.

I’m 25 and have been skating most my life. As I’m getting older, I’m trying to be aware that I won’t be able to do it forever, if I don’t start preparing myself for older age. These are some things I’ve been working on, and have been seeing results...
    1. Decrease the bad things into your body, increase the good. Cut out alcohol, smoking, and junk food. Not entirely, but cut parts of it out. Increase the amount of water and healthy foods you put it.
    2. DO NOT STOP SKATING! EVER! Once you stop, it’s hard to get back into it.
    3. STRETCH! Develop your own stretching routine, that takes at least five minutes. Do this first thing in the morning, mid day, before skating, during skating, after skating, and before bed. This will improve your skating, and your overall day in general.
    4. CARDIO! Any and all cardio exercises. This can be jump rope, running, walking, or sprints. I’ve been doing stair workouts, which I recommend the most. It’ll help with coordination, and it really helps when you have to bail out of a trick.
    5. CORE STRENGTH! Strengthen your core as much as possible. Sit ups, crunches, pull up, push ups, shrugs, curls, they’re all good. It’ll improve your overall balance, and it really helps doing manuals.
