- 'From The Factory Floor’ takes you on a deep dive into select processes around the PRS factory. In this episode, we explore our inlay process, including how we create our instantly recognizable bird inlays. This process combines the consistency of CNC machining with hand-crafted attention to detail for an unmistakable fingerboard that plays even better than it looks.
This process is narrated by Woodshop Construction Manager Veronika Kirkpatrick. Enjoy a view “From the Factory Floor” as our Inlay team prepares a set of rosewood fingerboards with abalone birds.

I always wondered how this was done. This seemed like a detail that would only be done one high end instruments but now I see the genius methods of PRS's small scale mass production.
At no time does she tell you which guitars these are made for
First they take the dingle bop and they smooth it out with a bunch of schleem. The schleem is then...repurposed for later batches.
They take the dingle bop and they push it through the grumbo, where the fleeb is rubbed against it. It's important that the fleeb is rubbed, becasue the fleeb has all the fleeb juice.
Then, a schlami shows up, and he rubs it...and spits on it.
They cut the fleeb. There's several hizzards in the way.
The blamfs rub against the chumbles, and the...plubis, and grumbo are shaved away.
The whole process is called grubberflipping... and at the end of it the final snortweasel is produced.
I wish that the nibbirate separation process was explained better

The wood, the grain, the finishes of all the guitars are all stunningly beautiful, but as a birder as well as a player, the fretboard birds are my favorite visual aesthetic of every PRS guitar! They are iconic and unique.
Easily one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen. That CNC machine is incredible.

First time I saw Santana playing a guitar with bird inlays I had to find out what it was. I now own over 20 PRS guitars and they are all amazing! Thank you Paul & company.
Ha! Just got my first one (s2 custom 24 made in usa). I was really looking for a different guitar, ibanez , fgn, hagstrom or something like that. I tested like 15 guitars, and then i picked up the prs just out of curiosity, and now i have it! Gotta say that music man majesty is another option, but in europe they are way too expensive..also i have to mention that i tried also prs se mark holcomb, but i didn't connect to that at all!
@@devinice2193 start saving for a core model. Nothing at all wrong with the s2's but the core stuff is amazing.
@@devinice2193 What FGN model did you play? I live in Japan - and at one time could have lived in Matsumoto, where Fujigen is located (didn't know this at the time) - and have come to really respect their product.
What is it you did/do in life to have been able to acquire 20 PRS guitars?!
@@TavisAllen I'm single and spend all my expendable income on guitars. I view it as a fun retirement account. I have around 75 guitars in my collection now. Will retire soon and start selling them off.
The fit, the dexterity, the machinery, the design, the r&d - all come together real nice, folks... Well Done & What a Good Job!!

Quite crazy to see the industrial scale and the speed in which guitars are made now days, comparing to hand made guitars. But jet, mid and high range guitars are more expensive than ever.
This level of precision makes it tough to blame your equipment. Give me hand made!

I've always wanted the PRS bird inlays and I finally got the JM Silver Sky SE. It is so amazing the attention to detail they put into the bird inlays. It really sets PRS apart from the rest. Such great playing and sounding guitars. I can't wait for the Super Eagle SE in the near future. 😉
I have an SE custom 22 semi hollow that plays like a dream, and an A55E acoustic with gorgeous mother of pearl binding and inlays with a blue flame maple back and sides. Both guitars are beautiful and play so nice. I can only imagine that the USA made ones are even a level above.

I am very fortunate to own a PRS Custom 24 35th Anniversary from their USA factory. Was super expensive and I had to save up for it but they are such a magnificent guitar. Just love the thing. Thanks PRS.

@@pechugaslarou3433 if you bothered to educate yourself before you threw around insults you would know that plenty guitar builders are still making handmade guitars. Collings and heritage are two that come to mind.
I love the birds on my PRS Hollowbody, somehow it puts you in mind of your fingers flying across the fingerboard.

I custom ordered a Private Stock through Chicago Music Exchange 3 years ago. I have played it every single day since I took possession. Sometimes it's only for 5 minutes and not even plugged in. But when you have something that personal and that expensive, it really does give you inspiration and drive. Same when I got my Helix. With my PRS guitar into the Helix into the Thomas Blug AMP1 100w amp and into an EVH 2x12 cab, you can make some very special music.

This was my first proper job in 1980. I used a machine called a pantograph engraver to rout the ebony board and headstocks and to cut out the mother of pearl. I did not do any birds, but I did do seahorses, so the pearl was glued down to prevent the seahorses swimming away.

@@morche1999 have you ever lived abroad mate? It's not easy trust me. I am living in third country by now. You need to fit in and you can't discard your roots that easy. I bet she can't just pick one. Obviously can't have perfect Murrican accent but can't give up trying to do it to fit in. Anyhow she gives me feeling that she is nice person. It ain't easy to be an ex path. I have been one for long. Have seen more people going hard true it that once that do it easy. Seen even different generations of ex paths and story is repeating itself. Almost 30 years living abroad. More than what I have lived were I was born.

This is very cool. More automated than I thought it would be but with a good deal of human care and attention.
On the contrary, I expected most of this process to be done by CNC machinery. This makes me curious to know how this was done "in the old days," and how long it took to streamline the process to where it is now.

At times I asked myself why prs guitars are so expensive, but looking at the craftmanship and playability that is done till you get the guitar, play it and see the finishes, all that money spend is worth it. Best guitars in the planet, some say the old stuff is better. To me and my experience prs gets better daily.
Wouldn’t say craftsmanship comes into it when they are 99% built by machines,not saying they aren’t great guitars but they aren’t luthier built.
@@davidlingard7369 i'm sure a machine does things way better than a hand build instrument. They are certain things that a machine can do better and also a human, better than a machine. Prs guitars are such in demand that if it was not for the machine they use, you'll wait months for a guitar. Paul and his team know what they are doing. The private stock is handbuilt.
@@seerattan They probably are great guitars I don’t know,I’ve only ever had a quick go on a friend’s,I do like the look of them and I can see they are meticulously built but I must admit that quick go I had,it felt a bit alien to me,i think it was the string spacing and I immediately gave him it back and thought I preferred the feel of my strat and I’ve never had a go on one since.Maybe I just tried the wrong one.
99% is a bit strong. Most major ‘custom shops’ are much less handmade. If you find something with the same fit and finish with hardware and pickups you can’t simply order online for less than a 3-year wait, I hope you buy and enjoy it. (PS: please don’t reply with a list of builders- I understand your original point. My only gripe was with your hyperbolic “99%.”)
