I'm a two stroke lover through and through. I miss the early 2000's where you had the mix of four and two strokes, but lets face it. The modern 450 is pumping out as many horses as the 500 two strokes were and it's easier to control. The only way to make two strokes more competitive especially at the pro level is to allow either 300's or bring back the 500's with some massive R&D in them again. Well that and if they would allow that it may actually help our dying sport because two strokes are cheaper in the long run. Lets face it it's pretty hard to have a several bikes and parts when the bikes are getting near $11 or $12k bone stock. But love hearing the two stroke and wish we could hear it again int he pro ranks.
@@otisjordan5613 Have you watched the qualifiers? there are several races where those who signed up went to the night show because they don't have enough people to really go against. Just because the stadiums are full doesn't mean it's not dying. Look at how many teams have gone under in the last 5 years. It's too expensive.
I feel like they wouldn't need hop-up kits if they put people like AC9 on them, that just ride wide open, how two strokes are meant to be ridden. A lot of the guys in straight rhythm need the bigger bores because they're used to having wide ranges of power, where two strokes have most of it in the powerband, wide open. Just my thoughts.

mcnamee30 yeah to a point but for real pros the advantage of the 4-stroke is there. They rev much higher and deliver power more linearly (predictable). Awesome video Cole. Turned out about like I thought. My brother and I have done the same thing ourselves, I am usually about a second or so quicker on my 250sx than he is on his 350 sxf on a long outdoor track. 2 seconds quicker than his KX250F. Results about the same when we switch bikes. Cheers!
Hey Cole, cool videos - mechanic tip on the two stroke from back in the day....Pro level two stroke mx/sx bikes should not idle. Unscrew the idle screw so after you blip the throttle, the bike runs on for only a couple seconds, then dies. This will allow you to brake later into turns as the idle isn't pushing you into the corner. And, because there is no engine braking, as long as the rear wheel is turning, the engine will not stall, it will be much more responsive and bark coming out of corners.
Tom Baxter is this because four strokes have a negative turn entrance acceleration tendency and there’s so little engine braking with a two stroke that it’s actually pushing you forwards? So this takes away the push forwards?
@@nepicness one of the few advantages a two stroke has is braking, four strokes idle at over 1000rpm, so this pushes it into corners. You cannot lower the idle or it will stall. A two stroke will not stall as long as the rear wheel is turning, even if it did, as soon as you let out the clutch, it will re-start and fire out of the corner. It is a little trick to maximize one of the two strokes strengths.
🍻can't wait to see what the modded 450f will do against the modded 250 on the same track. Maybe a 3 lap average? Either way I'm pumped to see more bike shootouts like this on your channel. Great vid bud👌 👊
as you have said, riding a smoker requires more work. so in a 20m plus 1lap if your physical conditioning is sub par compared to other elite guys, you'll end up 20th.

I rode 2 strokes up till I was 30, all types, yep they shit on any 4 stroke of the time, but 4 strokes got better, much better, . I switched to a 4 stroke like many others . Why ? Because they got better than any 2 strokes you could buy. Lots of reason. Modern 4 strokes don't go off as quick as a 2 stroke ( start losing power, getting rattles, pretty much after the first 5 hrs ) , modern 4 strokes stay consistent all day, idle-power-throttle delivery. ( 2 strokes change from 1 minute to the next, idle hi/don't idle etc etc). Modern 4 strokes don't nip up out of the blue? Modern 4 strokes sound better in my opinion on or off the thing ( each to their own ). Modern 4 strokes last longer from rebuild to rebuild. ( 2 strokes where out quick, people say but you will go through inlet valves etc etc on the 4 stroke, yep if ya don't keep clean air filters , if you don't keep clean air filters on 2 strokes you fuck the bore/main bearings/big & little ends etc etc, you will be splitting the motor and doing a top and bottom rebuild. The 4 stroke bottom end will last 10 times longer either way). People will say but 2 strokes are cheaper to rebuild? Not if your splitting engine and doing top / bottom rebuilds 10 times more than the 4 stroke. I'm just a trail rider these days, and I'll take the 4 stroke every day of the week. For more reasons than just how it sounds. 4 stroke is easier to ride in most conditions, some people just are kidding themselves if they think they can ride a 2 stroke better ( some people just don't like to admit the truth, I didn't invent either type of engine so I don't care about defending something that is not as good but can't admit it ) My 2 bobs worth.

The 2 stroke looked way better in the whoops, plus it seemed to corner easier. The 4 stroke had an advantage in power on the straight sections. I would take the suspended 2T over the stock 4T any time.
The fact that he was riding a 15 year old 2- stroke and it held it's own is impressive enough. The ktm250sx is 15 pounds lighter and makes several more hp than the Honda. Probably would have had even faster times on a new ktm 250sx!
I feel like the 250 pulled faster out of the beginning of the corners and like got more into the powerband faster into the face of the jumps but that's just off of speculation I wasn't actually on the bike to feel it first hand. Looking good though bro!!!👍👌
Just saw this..great comparison. It's all about traction. You should try a flywheel and see what happens!! I have a 2008 RM 250 with flywheel and a rekluse!! It is sooo smoth. Sweet comparison. Did the 250 have the Lectron carb? It sounded like it bogged a bit before the whoops and sounded tinny compared to the last vid with the Lectron on it, it really sounded meatier in last vid.
Different metrics for different folks.... the fun factor for some may out weigh the race speed factor, And I always saw four strokes as adding cost to the sport over the course of a season or two. A major reason when it was my turn to parent and support my kids, we went away from motocross and to Hare scrambles. Wish there were two stroke classes as "entry to the sport" type deals to allow a wider range of kids ( adult kids as well ) to get in and participate .. keeping the cost down. And that along with land accessibility are two major factors in the future of this as a sport. Unlike most sports as simply entertainment motocross as a pro sport is supported ultimately by those who ride and buy motorcycles and related products. Make it too hard and expensive.....your financial base will suffer.
I'm not gona lie its badass to see you put in a serious lap like dam you see why you rode for a factory team easily like wow its nothing like a normal person can do completely different level
Great video Cole! Please keep it up. I would like to see you on any track of your choice, WP Pro suspension for both 450SXF & 250SX and do comparison 2s v 4s.
Yoooo, I did the same thing on my Yz250 and Yamaha 450 at Muddy Creek and matched my lap times on both bikes. Pretty rad! My 450 didn’t have suspension at the time, so it was at a little bit of a disadvantage.
Why would it? It’s not like you can just pick a factory engine up from eBay easily is it? Maybe Honda might of wanted the engine back in preparation to build sexton a bike for straight rhythm as Cole is no longer affiliated with the Honda’s?
Tom Evans I don’t think it works like that buddy, and why would he take the engine out of it? Not like they got factory engines lying around it was purpose built for that bike
I think Cole, a proper test would have been to do the same thing a second time, just to prove the first results if they were better will then would be third fourth times. Just curious, does with the same setting on the suspension go from one bike to the other? Taking in two account the dry weight of each bike
I did my own test on my 2 stroke and 4 stroke:
2 Stroke = horrible lap time but fun
4 Stroke = horrible lap time but fun
Haha! 👊

Big fan of the vids( as I’m nearly finished my cr250 build and ur riding but I think you should rode the Honda 450 just on the bases that’s what ur used to and ur still new to the ktm not that it would matter to much but just was thinking u would use ur Honda
2 stroke
Hey man love watching the videos. Some more commentary and vlogging throughout the day would be cool? Maybe some voice overs of how you’re riding and why.
4 stroke needing double displacement to match a 2 stroke, and this video, is why Im a 2 stroke guy 4 ever ❤️
Ayyyyy 🤜🤛
Funny you say that but a 450 beats a 500 2 stroke aswell tho? All bikes are awsome it's all down to the rider at the end of the day.
@@tomatoknuckles is that because 500 2strokes are ancient tech?
ive havent seen them line up
my mate has a 300 2stroke and a 650 4stroke
he rides them back to back and says about the same power
@@matthewalbury6799 Look up ktm 450 vs cr 500. I'm not shitting on 2 strokes love them point i was making both can only be ridden as fast as the rider is good. Shit cole could be on an 85 and whip me on a 500.
Not the case with my 350sx and 380sx. The 350 is a little bit quicker.
You should get one of those Lit Pros so you can see what part of the track you were faster on
Sweet comparison.
Which bike did you feel more comfortable on? Did you feel like you could trust the 250 better to charge the jumps because of the suspension?
Dylan Bartlett yeah the suspension helps a lot
I'm not gona lie its badass to see you put in a serious lap like dam you see why you rode for a factory team easily like wow its nothing like a normal person can do completely different level
Entertaining comparison. Nice video. Now get suspension work on the 450 and compare again, we all know it should be faster, but how much faster.
Give the 2 stroke an extra 200cc and 15 years of development, then we would see, BRAAP
I'd be curious when the 450 is dialed redo the test!
Get on a 2005 SX track and put both dialed....see what happen, now tracks are made according to 4stroke performance....
(Quote from movie “ The Castle “ ). If there’s one thing Dad loves more than serenity it’s the sound of a big 2 stroke motor at full throttle.
What gear are you in on that track with the 450? It's definitely barking pretty loud compared to mine.
Keep up with the sick UA-cam vids!
This was a great video idea. Let's compare lap times of a 2 stroke and a 4 stroke. Why hasn't anyone done this before.
Great video Cole! Please keep it up. I would like to see you on any track of your choice, WP Pro suspension for both 450SXF & 250SX and do comparison 2s v 4s.
That 2 stroke looks soo easy to ride totally dialed
Yoooo, I did the same thing on my Yz250 and Yamaha 450 at Muddy Creek and matched my lap times on both bikes. Pretty rad! My 450 didn’t have suspension at the time, so it was at a little bit of a disadvantage.
This just proves it’s all in the rider and not the bike you ride
Does the 250 2 stroke still have the factory Honda engine in?
Tom Evans why wouldn’t it
@@gamer2350 Cuz it may not lol
Why would it? It’s not like you can just pick a factory engine up from eBay easily is it? Maybe Honda might of wanted the engine back in preparation to build sexton a bike for straight rhythm as Cole is no longer affiliated with the Honda’s?
Yes it does stock ecu though
Tom Evans I don’t think it works like that buddy, and why would he take the engine out of it? Not like they got factory engines lying around it was purpose built for that bike
I think Cole, a proper test would have been to do the same thing a second time, just to prove the first results if they were better will then would be third fourth times. Just curious, does with the same setting on the suspension go from one bike to the other? Taking in two account the dry weight of each bike
