Might be one of the best “African hunting” books I’ve ever read/listen too. Entertaining with African lifestyle and culture to actual hunting safaris. Highly recommend this book for those that are into the safari adventure.
I like when the narrator's style fits in with the topic. I feel like im listening to some handlebar moustached dude with a cigar and a cane from the 1900s
" I was born to late to explore the earth and to early to explore the universe " .. i love this book....most of my book and rifle collections are inspired on this masterpiece...blessings from Phoenix Arizona!
Dangerous animals, reptiles, tsetse fly belts, mosquitoes, war-like indigenous tribes-men, treacherous terrain, drought,... fair play to the men and their brave guides and porters that ventured into Africa's 'dark' interior; especially in the early years of her discovery by Europeans. Bravery, fortitude and sheer 'drive' in super-abundance.
Never realized how many guides got maimed and killed along with their brave trackers. Would not be a guide. Read about some of these as a 14 year and older. In the 50s. I thought then that would be a great life. Noooooo it wasn't. Thanks for the great post
John A. Hunter was one of the greatest of all of the Great White Hunters. His book, “Hunter” is absolutely incredible. Originally from Scotland, he moved to Africa near the end of the 19th century and was mainly active in East Africa and the Congo. Fans of big game hunters should also look into the works of Jim Corbett who hunted several; man-eating tigers and leopards in India. An early conservationist, there is a park in India that bears his name today. His first book, “The Man-Eaters of Kumaon” was made into an excellent movie in 1986.
Thank you! I worked in Africa and Alaska. Traveled Asia to Egypt. I could see the ghost's of these men in hotels and homes, mounted on the walls. What an age to have lived! I hunted Alaska, but now enjoy living critters more. Times have changed.
How sad what a great book I stayed up all night listening. I feel like Fritz would’ve been a all-time legend if he wasn’t trying to get a lion to charge on film and die I know it’s his fault but still it’s sad that he never would’ve put himself in that position had the Director not asked him to get a lion to charge them on film.
Could you imagine that hunting Africa in the 20's 30' with modern powders in those big bore rifles stepping into a untouched by modern man African savannah! Battling mega fauna left over from the last ice age!
African furry by Gearge Michael is a very interesting book and his movie Drums of Destiny is a good hunting short film but I all over for the CD but I couldn't will you please try and upload
What you are describing sir would more accurately be the affects of poaching. Legal hunting provides revenue for land and animal conservation. Also, ethical hunters tend to target older animals that are no longer able to reproduce. This helps to keep the herds healthy. Thank you.
I understand Teddy Roosevelt was responsible for securing federal lands establishing a few National Parks and the American public is thoroughly grateful. Lol but apparently he didn't give a damn about African wildlife .
@@DeaconDoggie more like 90% but most of those kills were meat for the camp and given the scientific knowledge zoos had at the time and the fact that the camera was only around 20 years old roosevelt preservation of those animals was by far the best option to teach the American people about African wildlife. Besides read his book game trails of Africa the colonies were already undertaking conservation measures
The Englishman killed more animals in Africa than the modern- day poachers and animal parts hunters who supply chinas fake medicine trade in animal parts
That's nonsense. A great many of those hunters were / turned conservationists. And in the 2nd part's epilogue he mentioned the explosion of population in Kenya and changes to agriculture and quantitative jump in land use. And look at the direct comparison between Kenya (hunting ban) and Tanzania (regulated trophy hunting). I bet all the fancy documentaries whose images are swirling through your head were filmed in Tanzania, not Kenya. And also what happened to Botswana's game population after the not so old hunting ban. Stop that environmental neocolonialism. Namibia is the best example. Only what pays for itself, gets preserved. That's the law on the continent with very soon the largest chunk in human population on earth 🌎
I was a trapper, hunter . Still flyfishing catch & release through caribbean etc & i’m still fighting, discuting with my friends your point. I don’t see why? .., i understand the animal chargeS . Ok.,, we don’t need hundredS animal charges to feel it.- They talked about animal reserves around 1915-30-40... Disaster !!!! - -They were british millionaire, millitary etc and fast with the trigger/ clutch - But what do you do wanna do ? - it was the time ... more you killed.., better you were the best man after some , many WiskeyS. - Now, since 1980 + we have to pay for these big mess etc etc etc. It’s a Human Evolution
Broaden your read watch beyond your preconceived notions of trophy hunting and you’ll discover the absolute necessity of hunting and that the deaths of the animals are valuable that just their skins
It cannot be explained. How you hunt a game animal . You come to admire the bird or animal. You worrie about keeping herd in good shape and comfortable. If no hunting thats find.. well being of birds or animals. Hunters spend alot money for care of the critters..Not none hunters.. They just bitch. While hunters love gsme like farmers love there sheep or cows ???
Listening to this while working makes me more excited for Deer hunting this weekend !!
Archery or gun? Whereabouts are you? Im in ontario and gyn doesnt start till Nov 4th

Don’t forget money. Most had plenty of that
Brilliant!! One of the best books I have ever read/heard. The author, a white hunter himself, brings events to life. A must read!
Captain Cook I highly recommend "Hunter" by J. A. Hunter of the Shaw & Hunter Trophy fame. To my mind he was the greatest of the White Hunters.

Great book. Great life.
Top job. Congratulations. Highly entertaining yet I couldn’t help but feel sad for an era gone forever and most of the characters long gone too.

I'm quite sure you have many stories that are quite similar as well.

It’s 7 hours long. They skipped parts?
And when there are none what are you as a hunter going to do hunt your fellow man most likly

He collected all those specimens for the Smithsonian Museum.
