Mr Rogers started to feed the fish on his set during the eppisodes after a little girl wrote to him worried that the fish were hungry. He made a point to make sure to feed them on camera from then on.

This man was a gem. My kids loved him. He talked about things that nobody talked about. He was wonderful.
Funniest thing I ever heard about him? At some point in the 90's, he published a book of fan letters written to him by children over the years. The craziest one was a child asking, "Mr. Rogers? Why is your face on the front of the penny, and your TROLLEY on the back?" I suppose at that size the Lincoln Memorial could be mistaken for the neighborhood trolley, but confusing him with Honest Abe!? Mr. Rogers never had a beard!

You're not wrong about men losing a step or two, which is why the male gender needs to be more compassionate, more empathetic respectful and responsible. Everyone wants to have the perspective of a better world just like Mister Rogers did, but to do that, we all have to be our own heroes and inspire others to follow his example

No. We do not. And not because we don't deserve or anything like that. It is mostly because we need to become more like Mr. Rogers and follow his example.
Another good fact: Mr. Rogers was a strong surpporter for equeal rights during after Martin Luther King's assaination, Mr. Rogers introduced Officer Clemmons and this was a year after the show first aired. I haven't seen any of the show but I know that he was Mr. Roger's equal and this at the time it was, it was very risky and could have cost him his show but he did it anyway as a way to show people we can be better then we were then. It shows he was a truely loving and caring person and I wish I knew of him sooner *silent tears*

TheBlackDragonKnight the episode that actually put him on the map was his special on the RFK assassination that aired i believe only 6 days after the assassination. After that episode aired a whole influx of stations across the country wanted to air his program
There was also one instance, at a time when black people were being banned from public pools in parts of the country, that Mr. Rogers shared his little pool with Officer Clemmons on the air. Sure, it was just a little kiddie pool and they just soaked their feet in it, but the symbolism of that act at that time was very strong. Mr. Rogers even washed Officer Clemmons' feet when they were done.

I remember being on the road with several co-workers when we heard about Mr. Rogers' death. Someone said that if Jesus ever needed an assistant, Mr. Rogers would be a perfect assistant for Jesus. We were blessed to have Mr. Rogers as our TV Neighbor.

He did live a life that was Godly without standing in front of a church. God put him there. He didn't back down from what God had for him. Plus the devil knew who God and Jesus is. It always bugs me whenever I hear my friends crack jokes about him being a pediphile. I know I shouldn't take it personally. They didn't grow up watching and listening to his amazing and difficult to understand lessons, but I still can't help feeling frustrated when I hear those awful jokes.

That says more about your friends than it does about Mr. Rogers. They are trying to put down someone who was so good and pure because they don’t trust it, or it bothers them. That’s sad. I always feel really bad for the people who try and put him down.
The video of his speech to congress is just under 7 minutes of pure magic. He spoke to a group of grumpy old men who just wanted to slash a budget and after 6 minutes they were so impressed the not only approved the budget for public broadcast, but increased it a few years later. He was a beacon for children, but in a brief moment on capital hill he made believers out of grown ups as well. This was Mr. Rogers, the man we all love and think of fondly.
Yep. The majority of my pre teen days were spent with Mr, Rogers. Children now days could use wholesome entertainment like this treasured icon.

Misters Rogers may have been an ordained minister but as mister Rogers we the viewers we're his congregation so I guess you could say he did preach to us the viewers
His show was my church when I was a child.

My early years were miserable and in a cold, not so good neighborhood. Rogers I feel gave hope uplifted and was a positive factor in my development at 50 now couldn't possibly give him enough praise today.

And of course he also was an educator but with a different classroom, his tv studio he didn't spend the extra amount of time grading papers like teachers in a real classroom setting, but still he was an educator, as every show he would teach kids different lessons.

While PBS was doing fundraising, they played a documentary about his show. I watched Mr. Roger's Neighborhood when I was younger, and watching that documentary brought me to tears. I had forgotten just how amazing a human being he was. It has made me realize how shitty the world is right now. I aspire to be as good as a person I can be because of Mr. Rogers.

The most fascinating thing about Mr. Rogers I think is he was once asked what he sees when he looks into the camera and he said I visualize one single person and I talk to them for 30 minutes. Which is probably the reason why he always felt like he was talking to me or you personally

I grew up watching Mr Rodgers, his calm and smile always made me feel safe as a child
Actually, Mister Rogers played the mentor of the town preacher on Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman. It was the preacher, not Mister Rogers's character, that lost the deed to the church to the man who ran the saloon and was planning on turning it into a brothel. It was only when Rogers's character showed up that the new proprietor had a change of heart and let the town preacher have an extension on the loan he owed.
Indeed...it was the only time in Rogers' long career that he ever played someone other than himself, and happened b/c he once mentioned that DQMW was one of the few TV series he enjoyed and watched regularly.

if you're ever in washington DC, try to plan a visit to the smithsonian museum of american history. there's a glass case, not too far from the door (it was in a hallway on the first floor when i visited in may '18) with several artifacts from pbs shows - bill nye's lab coat, oscar the grouch... and mr. roger's red cabled sweater (like the blue one in this video... i think his mom knit a handful of favorite patterns in a variety of colors. :) ). in my opinion, it really is *the* iconic mr. rogers sweater. :)
@@sue_m - Yeah, I saw his sweater on a family vacation to DC, way back in 1989...that and a pair of Judy Garland's ruby slippers from "The Wizard of Oz" were the two things I especially wanted to see on our Smithsonian visit!

Do you know Bob Ross was ex career military? I read an article that said when he retured out, he decided he was just too exhausted to waste any more time and energy YELLING ar people. So, he lived a quiet life teaching others to paint.

I always knew of this guy but I never grew up with him, but I’d wake up for school and I’d see his soft demeanor and he never came off as weird or creepy and I remember getting lost in the show and missing the bus on multiple occasions, and now seeing him resurface and I already love this man

I did know he wrote back to everyone. Mum wrote to him on behalf of us kids when I was very very young. She lost the letter at some point but I’ll never forget how I felt that MISTER ROGERS was writing to ME.
What an amazing man. He had a heart of gold. I truly believe that he was one of the kindest people to have ever walked this earth. I wish I had grown up watching him. Unfortunately since I was born in 2000, I didn’t really get the chance. If I someday have kids, they will definitely be raised on Mister Rogers.

That's a dream collaboration. Remember how MTV used to do celebrity deathmatch with living/dead/fictitiouscharacters? I'd pay to see and own something like that only the opposite, kind and gentle and nonviolent with those 2. Those 2 melt my heart and I can imagine they'd be adorable together.
Roger's love and driven passions for making the neighborhood a better place and now we all have years of glorious televised memories that proves how one person can make all the difference in the world.
The only video online that has no rude comments about it lol. He was a good man. God broke the mold when he made Mr. Rogers. If anyone deserved to live forever, it would have been this man.
He really was a unique person. In one of the incarnations of Candid Camera, they tried to play a trick on him but not putting a television in his hotel room during a tv convention. You just couldn't piss him off. They felt so badly about what they had done they apologized to him on the show. Wonder if anyone remembers that.

Mr. Rogers was an important part of my growing up as a young child. His show started in 1968 when I was 2. As a toddler and young child his show was very influential to me. I have very fond memories of the show and like to think that it truly influenced me to grow up a better person.

43 years. He spent 43 years inspiring and helping so many children even though he passed before I was born I was always excited to wake up early to watch the reruns before school he was so impacting I dont know who I would be at this point honestly a true blessing. 43 years is so long, more than half of his life he dedicated to your life and my life and million of other kids lives. I will never forget you mr. Rodgers I hope you will be my neighbor one day.

Yes, he may have been talking to the people watching him at the time, but his words live on and are for every human being to live by! What makes his shows sooo different than anything I’ve watched is the fact that there’s nothing to worry about when watching him! No worrying about a bad thing about to happen! Just comfort! I saw this documentary on Mr. Rogers and I literally cried my eyes out when they showed him at the very end and he was super old but he had such a Glow of Goodness!
I have a deep and profound love for Mr. Rodgers... he was my favorite neighbor...I miss him.
My childhood was very traumatic. Mr. Rogers gave me the bright spot I needed so much and helped me to believe that he loved me, so I would be ok. He was amazing.

He had flaws like any human, but he made it okay to embrace the flaws and the failures cause it's what makes life wonderful. I never watch any of his show, but somehow i felt a great deal of loss, for knowing there never will be no one like him again. I'm so touched by his kindness and his legacy.
People say the world needs another Mr. Rogers. If you know him then you should know to follow in his footsteps. He doesn’t need to be in this world anymore, he left a legacy.
Although I never watched the program, I saw clips of it, plus interviews, and always thought he had the most soothing voice out there. Plus, he practically radiated love and respect, so there must be millions of grownups out there who learned from him.

They should have said most of the sweaters were made by his mother. One episode he visited Winona Knitting Mills and was given a sweater which he also wore on air.
