Deloused in the Comatorium is one of those albums that absolutely changed my life.
Yup. It was the first prog and first concept album I've ever listened to. Didn't know what the fuck I was listening to at first lol. Here I am a decade and a half later still rocking that out out like a MF.
One of the best albums ever.

Me too! One of my top 5 shows was seeing them in a club in Seattle when they toured for Deloused.
Jon Theodore was the drummer for their first three albums. He's a beast.

I absolutely love their first album and always tell everyone about them! The original album has the original band before the loss of a member.
First three albums are masterpieces. I'd put Frances the Mute up there with De Loused, and songs like Day of the Baphomets and Tetragrammaton are in a category of their own. I like all their work but they did get progressively less amazing over the years. Also a lot of Omar's solo stuff circa 2008-2010 is just as good as TMV, though there's a lot of noise to get through.
@@MrFreeGman Apparently i have unpopular opinions about this band. I think Frances is one of the greatest albums of all time. I think that Bedlam and Noctourniquet are the next best.
Ive never understood the love for Deloused. Its a great album, but its their most derivative album by a long shot.
Frances the mute and Deloused are equal to me. Amputechture is a guilty pleasure and bedlam... is a wonderful album with a shitty mix.
@@TheAlibabatree Agreed about Frances the Mute, however I believe it presents a bit of a flaw with the originality argument. The Widow is arguably TMV's most derivative or even generic song. Amazing Band though and totally respect your opinion. I think TMV fans are in one of two camps: Jon Theodore or Thomas Pridgen :)

Someone once said of this album when I was apprehensive about checking it out: "they play with the intensity of people with guns to their heads". Also that's flea on bass.
Flea was on Antesmasque but I don't remember Flea on TMV...

Flea didn’t do the recorded bass on the studio version, he did the demos and helped nail down all of the basslines. Summer Demo Sessions is Deloused on the rocks. Check it out, it’s another version of the album.
FYI Ralph Jasso actually wrote most of the original bass lines. Flea may have added a tweak here or there.
The Mars Volta is an absolutely phenomenal band. They're one of those bands that speaks to any musician, creative, or open minded person. Those are the people who truly appreciate this kind of music. No you can't dance to this, no this isn't gonna go down well in a bar or club, but for people like us this is a hidden treasure. We're the ones who aspire to push the boundaries of music, and no respectable person will look down on that. If it isn't for you that's fine, but that doesn't give anyone the right to force feed someone their ideas of what music should be. This is coming from my personal experience with certain types of musicians. It can be really agitating to say the least.
Dude if you put enough money in those internet connected jukeboxes, you can force everyone to listen to their whole discography, which I've done more than once. You're gonna get in more than one fight, and prolly get your ass kicked at least once, but you're also gonna create a bunch of new fans after a while. Worth it

That’s Flea on the bass. He played on this entire record. There are some great bass lines on this record.
These guys are gods. Been binging on them for the past couple weeks after not listening to them for a while. Their first three albums are masterpieces.
Edit - review Tetragrammton. Easily their most insane song.
Tetragrammaton is the pandoras box of prog music. There is so much shit happening in that song, my favorite being the poly rhythm added with the sax in the outro.

Best Buy back in the day had new Band Cd's for $5, and I would go buy 3 or 4 every week. I picked this Album and fell in love. Months later they win a Grammy for the best new Artist.

I love The Mars Volta. Been a fan ever since their first album was released. I remember how overwhelmingly dense and chaotic that first album sounded to me, but I kept listening until it became digestible. I think their second album, Frances the Mute, was their masterpiece (with the 30+ minute Cassandra Gemini being their magnum opus). I liked the stuff that came after but I don't think they ever quite matched those first two albums. Not sure why THIS track has become the primary "reaction" track. It's not really one of my favorites from them. I think Viscera Eyes makes the best intro to the uninitiated. It's groovy as hell but still with plenty of TMV signature weirdness.
I think the epitome of calculated jamming is Take the Veil Cerpin Taxt.
It´s amazing to find people who loves The Mars Volta so much as I do.
Jon Theodore is a beast on drums, saw him live with Queens Of The Stone Age
He thoroughly enjoys playing with Queens but I really feel like there's so much wasted talent there.

QOTSA is about ear candy and melody...their drummers (incl. grohl) have always had to find their way while staying in pocket. If that's not a musician's bag it's the wrong band for them. JT seemed happy enough with it...
...BUT it aint TMV. Their stuff was amazing, esp. for the 1st 2 albums and parts of the 3rd (meccamputechture and tetragrammaton especially). And JT's work with them was awesome.
As for the ambient noise interludes...I skip it for the most part.

Regarding Inertiatic ESP, I think that song is among the most perfectly concocted baits in the story of prog rock.
To the average listener, it's a fast tempo, well structured banger with a catchy chorus and just a bit of "weird" thrown into it. But once you dig just a little bit deeper...

It's such a good example of weird timing and structure used not just for the sake of it, but in a way that really elevates the song.

This breakout album of theirs is notorious for a reason; it's definitely one of those instances where I can only recommend spending the time to listen to the whole thing. Every song has something great to enjoy, really creative, great energy and originality in melody and rhythm. Fantastic stuff.

Cedric Bixler-Zavala is one of my favorite vocalists. His collaborations with Omar Rodriguez-Lopez are legend. Their albums really need to be listened to in their entirety because they tell stories.
Dude, there is this song called Meccamputechture we often listen to when we are LSD tripping and as i understand is one of their most complex and experimental song ever. That thing has a lot of effects and uses more instruments than a regular rock band does. Hope you like it c:

Take the Veil and Televators are two of my favorites.
I get the impression having listened to The Mars Volta's catalog and most of Omar (the composers)'s work that much of the guitar solos are created by a back and forth of free flowing jam sessions and countless hours of tinkering in a studio with various effects, combining the best of both.
One of the things I like to mention when getting people into The Mars Volta is that Omar and Cedric (the vocalist) were both very into obscure cult films, and the music often takes a lot of influence from the kinds of emotions and atmospheres you would get with a film soundtrack, it often makes figuring out what he's going for a lot easier to try to imagine a scene and story that would accompany it.
Also, if you want to listen to it again before talking about it, then you can, just edit it out and then play different sections as you talk about them, it would dramatically increase the scope of what you could end up talking about without adding too much work.

Experimentblack that Rollins show performance has got to be the shittiest footage of them that isn’t recorded with a cell phone. Omar was way too fucking loud and overpowering everyone by ridiculous amounts. It’s borderline unlistenable to me.

If you ever do The Mart Volta again, I highly recommend 'Roulette Dares (The Haunt Of)' off the same album. It has lots of the same frantic energy, but with some beautiful melodic moments.This album is sort of a concept, it follows a narrative, and all the songs bleed in and out of each other so that's why some intros and outros may sound weird. It's really an album you have to listen to from start to finish to get the full impact.
They have a lot of influences from Mexican Music, specially from the "mariachi" figures in the guitar. They're awesome, one of my all time favs for sure. You should try Eriatarka, my favorite from De-Loused in the comatorium

Someone might have mentioned it already (can't read ALL the comments lol) but, this is a Concept album and really needs to be listened to beginning to end. The good news is is that "Inertiatic" is the first song, so you came in at the beginning of the story.
It's getting the the point that not even I can read all the comments. I've averaging over 1000 comments a week so I completely understand it if I see similar comments from multiple people.
With that said, I've added this album to the list of concept albums that I need to check out as a whole.

yeah, they are amazing!! i got to see them live back in 03 or 04 and it was one of the most memorable concerts ever!! they go nuts and it's so awesome
Luckily had a older brother into some lesser known stuff. So i got to be a hipster “knew this band before anyone did” about the mars volta. He got me into At the Drive In before the Mars Volta even came out. When tremulant dropped we loved it and i can still remember gushing with inspiration from these guys. They were just dripping, soaking wet in it.
I recall a lot of mystery and anticipation from us and others for Deloused. It did not disappoint. Hands down one of the best musical achievements in the past 30 or more years. Absolutely phenomenal album and Frances the Mute aint no fucking slouch either. All amazing albums and eps and bsides.
Those guys tapped into something beyond between in casino out, to Amputechture. Amputechture still had a lot of great moments on it though it doesn’t get as much love.
But deloused belongs up there with Lateralus by Tool and White Pony by Deftones and Ok Computer by Radiohead as some of the best and most important music to come out in the past few decades. Without a doubt.
And, unlike hipsters... i am SO glad more and more people are getting on board for early Volta.
I recommend finding a 6 minute version of this song so you can see how the song reallly develops and breathes. Other songs highly recommended to enjoy in your early exposure to The Mars Volta are:

Really great commentary. To extrapolate that on your first listen is impressive. I think that is really the brilliance of The Mars Volta. They take pop/rock songwriting, and weave it seamlessly with jazz, prog, salsa, and improv jams.
I think this was a pretty good introductory track, but they get a lot better the further you go into their discography. This first album was heavily influenced by post-rock and post-punk. They develop a more unique sound later on.
The next song i would recommend is "Cygnus... Vismund Cygnus."

I've never heard them before, that was fantastic. I grabbed this album right away. I'm not going to lie, I thought that was a female vocalist until I looked closely at the video. That's some upper range.

What you said at the beginning of the video describes me perfectly. For a long time I knew who they were but I never gave them a chance because they seemed too "difficult" and I associated them with the "lame emo movement". Then one day I heard one of their songs in full, that lead me down the rabbit hole, and they ended up being one of my favourite bands of all time.
F yea! I sang along - all the words. Love this track and it's a shame but lots of people missed out on TMV when they were bangin'. Please listen to Take The Veil Cerpin Taxt, and Cassandra Gemini. Then dig a little bit on who Cerpin Taxt was (RIP) it will blow your mind as it explains the concept behind the tragic beauty. It certainly made me appreciate these dudes' work on another level.

I love these guys. Deloused In the Comatorium is a masterpiece. I saw them back around 2009 and they played for almost 3 hours straight. It was pretty much just a really long jam session with songs here and there.

John Theodore is a beast of a drummer. All members are beasts of musicians. Check their whole catalog. Saw them live for the first time in 04 opening for a perfect circle, Amarillo Tx of all places.

This is a great introduction to the band but you should definitely come back to these guys and do Cassandra Gemini (full 32 minute song) or Day of the Baphomets like a couple others requested.

Also wanted to throw this out there as well, that in my opinion this album was a masterpiece above any of their other albums because of the drummer and producer they had on the album (who died after this album, which is why it has something special about it). Not to mention the story of this album is next level... dig deeper my man... there’s an endless well.

Yes, thank you! I always enjoy people’s initial reaction to The Mars Volta because, ask any of my close friends and they will tell you, TMV is and has always been my favourite band of all time. The album Noctourniquet their last one changed my life, as it was the one I actually ‘served’ lyrically as thoughts, while Octahedron have been my thoughts daily for a number of years now. Vicarious Atonement is one you should check out on your own, because it's too slow burn and there's no drums. It's just the chillest psychedelic song I've ever heard. Their sound has a lot of acid rock elements to it, and they push that psychedelia to the extremes more so than any other band I've ever heard.
The few seconds that they snip out of the radio single edit of the song really upset me. They may seem rather insignificant when you hear the album version but I really wish you had listened to and reacted to that first. Watching your reaction to the first song of the album, the first song I heard from TMV, reminded me of how I felt on my first listen. Great reaction video!

It isn't as technical-prog as TMV...I love both bands for very different reasons.

This is actually a condensed version of the song! There's an intro track that leads right into it, and the song is usually longer as well
Haha the thing about the jarring video is somewhat of a running joke in some of their other videos, like in Goliath (which I highly recommend you listen to next!) it is very much deliberate, if you look at what they're doing you quickly realize what it (would) actually sound like
