Straying off the beaten path here for a moment to show Alex some newer age prog! Probably a first for a lot of you guys, let us know what you think about the track?!?! Cheers friends! 🔥🤟🏻
Sorry guys, wasn't crazy about this one. 😑
@Nanci Ives
That’s alright, not everything is gonna be your cup of tea 😁
@@andyandalex Mahavishnu Orchestra - Meeting of the Spirits. The invention of progressive rock.

Just wanna warn you, if you're planning on doing King Crimson on your patreon page, there's probably going to be very little of the original material from their proper albums to use. Robert Fripp tries to keep a very tight grip on his stuff. So what you end up reacting to may very well be a remixed, rerecorded, unused take or any such thing besides the actual familiar song.
Just FYI.
The amount of people disliking Mars Volta makes me weep.
Makes it more special for those of us that "get it"!
spotify's top 50 makes me weep.
those people have no fucking souls.
they just don’t get it and you can’t make them. we are a special club. 😂
yep. in their hayday fricken 8-10 piece band all playing amazing prog rock in unison, sometimes in 19/16 time signatures. If you hate Mars Volta, you simply hate complex music. Cedrics voice isn't for everyone but all of the music behind it is stellar and frankly ground breaking at the time of release sans some greats like King Crimson and Yes, etc.
I'm surprised by all the dislikes, this band is on another level.
Dislikes is not about the band but about is being a reaction video. :R
Legit one of the best prog albums of the 2000’s
You must be new to the internet
@@AV-RC LEGIT!!
The Mars Volta was was too advanced for some people. Their music is insane. The guitars, the drums, the vocals. It’s all just truly amazing and unique
One of the most creative/artistic albums of all time. It's a complete masterpiece from front to back. So underrated...
James Wyatt
Absolutely!
Couldn’t agree more. I completely get lost in the music, particularly from this album. So much love for their artistry.
Frances the Mute >
@@BonzoDrummer Nah
No it isn't.
This album is sacred. It’s like they captured his spirit and made him immortal. Best tribute to a friend ever. First four albums are great, but this one ....🖤
TMV is easily the most original, daring, talented genre pushing rock band of the last 20 years.
Wow, this is a great surprise. The Mars Volta are terrific and this is a great example of their chops (not to mention an astounding album). Honestly, I never thought you would get to something like this. Pleasantly surprised.
One of the best prog albums ever.
Jeremy Hodges
No doubt!
Lets give the boys some up votes to counter the down votes. Just because you don't like as song as much as they do doesn't mean you should dislike their video.
@x420utlaw
Thank you! Lol!
This showed a lot of musical skill . Good imagination . I liked it and Im 65 years olds .
that's just the beginning of
TMV masterpiece
Loved the vocals and the music. It’s crazy since I’ve seen this album cover so many times but never c(d)ared to listen. Thanks for the introduction👍🏼
Mars Volta is definitely an acquired taste but its the filter that keeps alot of people off the deep end of prog rock. This is a mix of all kinds of cultures and generations of music in one colorful package.
Welcome to Mars Volta, glad you're here!
I love Mars Volta. Can’t wait for you guys to hear more of them.
the band no exist XD
Totally prepared to hate it but to my surprise, I liked it.
@Sandra W
Kudos to keeping your mind open enough to find yourself enjoying it! 🔥😁
Yeah the hate is unwaranted. This album is damn near 20 years old, was produced by Rick Rubin, and is amazing organized chaos for like 45 minutes. Need to take in the whole album to really appreciate it, it also might help to be high on mushrooms.
One of my all-time favorite bands. Thanks for listening. Dude on the right needs to listen to the whole album. This song is just an INTRO to an amazing concept album.
Also, like someone said below me, listen to their second album "Francis the Mute". Again, another concept album that tells a story all the way through, first song is technically amazing and the final song is 32 minutes of genius.
David Williams 💯
“The Widow” from their album “Frances The Mute” is another pretty accessible track. If you want to get lost in the sauce then check out “Meccamputechture” from their 2006 album “Amputechture”. 🔥🤯
So glad you guys did this. What a surprise on a Monday! Deloused is one of my favorite albums of all time in addition to Lateralus and Animals. If you do another solo track, do “Cygnus... Vismund Cygnus”. It’s the opening track on their next album, Frances the Mute. While I’m here I might as well remind you to react to Lost Keys/Rosetta Stones by Tool. In case you forgot.
I'm finding it oddly familiar so many tool fans enjoy mars volta too. Love it!!
That tension resolution about 7 minutes in after the first big solo and buildup in Cygnus is one of the most beautiful moments in music I can think of. The catharsis is real. Still hits me after hundreds of listens.
I was 19 when this album was released. It still gets me. Wow!!!!
If you love this you'll undoubtedly love the band they came from: At the drivein.
Ok, NO idea what I just listened to but interesting all the same. It seems the students have become teachers! And if whiskey is for thought this is definitely a Tequila track......🥂
I’m not sure where the half dislikes are coming from. Very cool of you to do a relatively newer track (although you guys were probably like 3-4 when this dropped)
Dude I saw these guys in 2003 at the Queen Mary All Tomorrow's Parties. I had never heard them! I had no idea what was going to happen. Life changer. So sick.
The newer prog bands owe so much to the likes of Yes, Emerson Lake & Palmer, etc. Please check out “Awaken” or “Close to the Edge” by Yes, or “Lucky Man” or “Fanfare for the Common Man” by ELP.
Probably not gonna happen. We've been hammering them to do “Close to the Edge” or “Heart of the Sunrise” for awhile. BTW I think they should NOT do Awaken until after those two.
I love Fanfare For the Common Man. Good choice. I also love From the Beginning, by ELP.
Siberian Khatru is my first choice from Yes....though I'd take either of those you mention. I agree that Awaken should be further down the line.
Even the Beatles - I heard one or two things that were reminiscent of their studio experimentation.
@@doplinger1 Yep, I heard that too!
At The Drive-In had a big hit with "One Armed-Scissor" toward the end of my time in high school. That band split up into Mars Volta and Sparta. I spent high school and the beginning of college listening to classic rock, but my husband introduced me to this band in '05 when we started dating our third year of school. My mind was blown.
Mars Volta are amazing. And they crush it live.
Guys if you go this route you must do Meeting of the Spirits by John McLaughlin and Mahavishnu. Every heavy metal guitarist since the dawn of time has wanted to play like Mclaughlin.
One Word. Dance of Maya. Awakening.
Wow!! Havnt heard that in ages
Mahavishnu Orchestra was unreal.
Or "Mediterranean Sundance Ochos Rios" off of Friday Night in San Francisco. Some say the greatest guitar song ever.
@@manjay49 If they like drumming, definitely One Word. Billy Cobham is a beast.
I like when he said "whoever was mixing this did a good job", yes it rick fucking rubin lol
Dave Schiffman
The vitriol is odd. Like it or don’t like it, but Andy and Alex gave the song an A+... ok you didn’t like it, fine. But it’s their channel and if they like something you don’t just say you don’t get it and wait for the next video. Easy peasy.
As for the album, Deloused in the Comatorium needs to be heard as a whole piece. The dissonance is part of the vibe. The album is a story about Cerpin Taxt, a man that overdosed and falls into a coma. The sounds in Son Et Lumière are the ambulance ride to “the Comatorium”. There Cerpin has lucid thoughts inside his immobile body where he tussles with what got him there. These thoughts would become too much for him to handle and when he awakes days later from the coma he jumps out of the window.
This album was inspired by an artist friend of theirs that had overdosed several times only later to jump off an overpass. But he was an amazing artist that painted and drew dreamscapes which the writers of the album used as their muse. It was a cathartic reaction to losing a friend and lesson they’d like to not follow.
I wonder how many listened to this in good headphones? How many paid attention to the amazing bass played by Flea or insane key play by the late, great Ikey Owens? This band is not for everyone but they really are.
yes, thank you!
this might be a good time to show a little appreciation for this channel and how you guys have exposed yourself to and appreciated so much of the music of folks that came a few generations before you. and what's more.. always, always respected the music even when you may not have cared for it that much. gentlemen you've more than earned this moment of musical indulgence, and the least regular folk here can do in my view is return to you that same respect. regardless of our fuddy-duddyness. Lol! keep up the great work!!
@flubblert
Appreciate the kind words man! We have a lot of fun!! 🔥😁
Indeed! Best comment I've read, flubblert. Have a great day, friend. :)
@@andyandalex it shows. and is often contagious for most of your viewers. more so than you may know.
@@lisaw5604 thanks Lisa!! have a good'n.
If you get exposed to this album at 12 years old....it blows your mind! Then you see them live how they play a long set with out stopping blending songs into each other with new solos on all instruments. Best band for for me of early 2000s. You had to be there to get it right?
I saw them open for A Perfect Circle. Still one of the best shows I've ever seen.
One of my all time fav bands. This album is a masterpiece “De Loused In The Comatorium”.XX
That was awesome dude, the craftsmanship on this song is amazing. 👏👏👏👏👏💯💯💯💯
Karn Evil 9 1st Impression Pt. 2 - Emerson, Lake & Palmer. Get some ELP for the prog fans!!
No way do it right, Karn Evil 9 from the start. part 1
To me, Cedric Bixler-Zavala's voice reminds me of a young Robert Plant.
exactly!!
Best prog extravaganza band of the 2000-2010 decade. Try Drunkship of Lanterns next ;-)
Just do the whole album.....
My son did his report for music class his senior year on The Mars Volta, and this was the song he used. His teacher was blown away that he was into prog.
OMG Dudes! You are finally reacting to my favorite band and there is so much hate in the comments from the older generation. I am the first to say that The Mars Volta gets better with every listen. These two songs are the first two songs from their first album which is a concept album about their friend who committed suicide. I would recommend "Cicatriz ESP" from the same album if you are having doubts about them now! They have SOOO many more songs and they literally change up their sound on every album and almost every song! Please don't write them off!
A completely different sounding and more amazing song off of their 3rd album is a song called "Tetregrammaton" which is supposed to mean "the four letter name of god" or YHWH short for "Yaweh." This is a reference to religious fanaticism in South America which in some instances involved murder and torture. The lyricist encodes the meaning in cleverly complex lines. It's 16:41 long (lol) but it is really like 3 songs rolled into one arrangement. I guarantee you will rate it A or higher!
Excellent review. I’ve been in the Fandom since inception. Mars to me is one of the best acts of modern music. They can’t be explored piecemeal. They need the time and attention they deserve. I’ve heard others say it’s “organized chaos”. All of their sound is intentional. No missteps.
I'm 69 years old and I love Mars Volta, so cut some of us in the "older generation" some slack, we're not all musical luddites. Francis The Mute one of my top 10 all time favorite albums.
You guys earned a sub just for the fact that you’re closing your eyes and clearly listening to and internalizing the music… instead of watching a music video and commenting more about what’s on the screen. Love The Mars Volta and now I love this channel!
That's Flea on bass on their first album, btw.
only on two songs
I love Frances The Mute, The Bedlam in Goliath, and Amputechture albums
IMO their best album
I would put this in my top 10 records made past 2000. PERIOD.
Well that was different. But enjoyable. I will definitely be listening to more of there stuff. Ps we need more who, BEHIND BLUE EYES. Pps if you could see your way to doing la woman by the doors on patron I would be eternally grateful plus you will love it. 👍Keep rocking dudes😊❤️
That song is amazing, it makes you see the world from other view
Happy New week Guys. I was jamming this track a couple days ago! Check out One Armed Scissor when the Band was Called At the Drive in. Enjoy the music.🙂
They became instant favourites 15 years ago upon first listen. I was already knee deep into prog.
Feels like they took the heavier bits of classic prog like Crimson and Yes and built up from there, mixing it up with some of the more aggressive and heavy Zeppelin and more modern punk stuff, and cranking it up to 11.
I really like The Mars Volta and understand how it is not everyone's cup of tea. Tetragrammaton off their third album, I think their third anyway, would be my suggestion for the next cut. Cheers, and keep spreading your wings!
That and Cassandra Gemini!
No one should ever skip Frances De Mute, their best concept album IMO.
I seriously wonder about people who dislike your videos.
If you don't like the song just leave a comment, or say nothing.
Why dislike their video?
That's just mean.
This is a GREAT channel.
Lets keep it that way 🙂
Big thumbs up for giving Mars Volta a go
You liked Volta, gotta give Sparta a shot. “At the drive in “ split, half went Volta. The other went Sparta! Both Great!
Sparta "Cut Your Ribbon" is a great track to start with and At The Drive-In "Starlight" is still one of my all time favorite opening songs for an album.
Sparta "Porcelain" album is amazing as is At The Drive In"Relationship of Command". When At The Drive-In broke up Mars Volta and Sparta were both born
I remember when this first came out this band this time was in fire
Prog recommendation: “Entangled” by Genesis. Beautiful 12 string arpeggios by Steve Hackett and the haunting synth solo at the end of the song by Tony Banks will transport you to another dimension.
2 years late on this one. But these guys are amazing. The mars volta are deffinitely an unknown tool level band. The music is so good and just hits different.
As a 66 year old cowboy type dude I was ready to dislike. However, changed my mind. Great vocals, missed a lot of the lyrics. Probably just hearing loss from to many 70’s concerts.
Honestly, the lyrics are supposed to be an after thought to the vocals anyway. Think of the vocals as another guitar. They cut through the mess to give a melody and beauty.
they are heavily influences by Yes
Cracking album.
Philip Joyce
One of the greats
The Mars Volta is one of my favourite bands ever. There are a lot of gems in their catalog waiting for you to find them.
So glad you guys finally got to Mars Volta. They are definitely one of my favorites. I remember seeing them for the first time live, my jaw dropped. I Was so blown away by them. From the first couple songs I heard before the show, I thought they were weird. But once I saw them live and started listening to albums, it just clicked.
Songs but Mars Volta that I think you should check out Day of The Baphomets, Goliath, and Francis the mute (Skip the 4 minute intro of noise).
Who's with me on Porcupine Tree? Speak up guy's.
Brian Newell definitely these guys would love porcupine tree!
Porcupine Tree best prog band imo.
Porcupine tree, for sure. But where to start? lol.
@@cbh440 I think Blackest Eyes, or Anesthetize - Live would be great starting points, kind of the basic recommendation songs but whatever. What Happens Now - Live is also great or Hatesong - Live, for introduction.
Agreed. I recommend Sound of Muzak
Finally you've broken out of the 70s! Happy to have you introduce me to to newer music.
I’ve been following you guys for a while. I’m one of those old middle age guys but I really like this a lot. Never heard of this group but they really kick it up a few notches. Keep up the great work/lovin’ what your doing & I’m still pushing for Gerry Rafferty rocking Baker Street. Do it & you won’t be disappointed on any level. Ciao!
This album is phenomenal. A big influence on me as a musician. You should check out At the Drive-in which is some of the members original band. Also if you like this vocal style you might like the band Mew. Another amazing band.
Love the Mars Volta.
this band is amazing
Love it! This whole album is an experience!
A perfect album
Different! Loved it. Thanks.
This band is pure fire 🔥.
Love it! Can't wait to play this for my son. Lots of awesome newer rock/prog groups that don't get any exposure in the commercial-sheep world of public radio...thank goodness for the internet and self publishing.
I rarely listen to them anymore, but when I do I'm shook! Once again.
Love the visceral energy the Mara Volta evokes, hoping for a reunion sometime this year so that’d be rad! Definitely the beginning of a rebirth in prog once this band emerged, many others tried to reciprocate their energy!
Try TMV Cassandra Gemini the long 32 min version
This is one of their masterpieces!
Whats with all of the down votes? I like this song a lot more than most of the recent ones. Must be the older viewers who are used to you guys reacting to old rock music.
x420utlaw it happens, we don’t chase trends though, we’ve had a lot of people thank us for showing them a new band or even hate it but tell us why, in either case I think the downvotes are more knee jerk reactions than anything
I'm 64 this year, and was a RUSH fan from Day One. My sons, now 34 and 31, were both born sharing their dad's enthusiasm for the band, as well as others with virtuosic players such as Racer X. During their teenage years, our tastes in music began to diverge: My youngest son got into The Mars Volta in part because Racer X bassist, Juan Alderette, had joined that band in time to record "Francis the Mute," but I just couldn't connect with TMV's esoteric material. Bands such as Racer X, Symphony X, Children of Bodom, and Into Eternity--even Linkin Park-- were much more my thing.
ronforeman
Very cool to read your post. Love that you came to Mars because of Racer X and Juan. Very sad news about Juan’s bicycle accident and coma. He’s going to have a long recovery but they’re updating his condition and it has improved.
Have you tried any other songs after Frances the Mute? Their sound evolved over the years. You may like other stuff more.
Try Viscera Eyes, Metatron, or Goliath.
I really enjoyed hearing Alex's breakdown on this. I have to tell you I am a bit flabbergasted. I don't mean to patronize but as musicians I would have thought you both were familiar with this. This came out in 2003 and maybe I don't realize how young you are or where your musical vocabulary basically starts. Most of your reactions have been 80s or before. i understand that isn't going to be as fluent a period of music except for pet bands like Pink Floyd, etc.
Anyway, are you aware of Sufjian Steven's Illinois or Joanna Newsom Ys? What about Blood Brothers' Burn Piano Island Burn? This opens up an entire new window of chronology for you guys and I hope you respond to this because I can definitely turn you on to some shit.
OMG Joanna Newsom is literally my favorite musician of all time, Blood Brothers? Yes please, Fucking love Burn Piano Island Burn, as well as their other albums
Burn Piano Island Burn, I knew the guys and got to hear it on a shitty stereo-I had never heard that kinda music that well produced. It was a game changer. I never would’ve thought people were still into it!!! You guys rule.
GREAT STUFF!!!!! Incidentally the album artwork was done by the late Storm Thorgerson. Who also designed many of Pink Floyd’s album covers as well as many other bands album artwork as well.
@Trent Fry
That’s awesome!!
he's the one that came up with the prism design for Darkside. possibly the most iconic album cover in rock history. may he rest in peace.
I've always loved Cedric's lyrics. Probably some of the hardest to interpret, but are very deep. The album is largely about their friend that committed suicide. "Clipside of the pink eye flight. I'm not the percent you think survives. I need sanctuary, the pages of this book." After mourning the death of his friend, he's not the same person he was before the events that happened, he's changed. He needs a distraction from all the pain, the book is the way to escape that.
If you guys like The Mars Volta, you should check out their precursor At the Drive-in, and the successor Antemasque
Love that you guys reacted to this! Incredible album. Love your work keep it up fellas
One of my favorite Albums of all time!
And now for something completely different : )
That was interesting, for sure.
I second the Mahavishnu Orchestra request, but I'll go even more obscure on you. Brand X, The Poke.
The bass player will blow your mind and I believe Phil Collins was on drums. It's jazz fusion and it's an instrumental.
And I have to keep requesting the best piece of Prog Rock ever written; YES, Close to the Edge. I just can't wait to "watch" you listen to it, let alone what you'll say afterwards : )
Brand X? I thought I was the only person who liked Phil Collins side project but you've proved me wrong. Close to the Edge, one of the best prog rock albums ever made. The Yes Album comes a close second though.
@@ianross5970 and Fragile. Nice to meet another fan of Brand X. Any chance you also like The Dixie Dregs? If not, check out the piece called I'm Freaking Out, and get back to me : )
Lightmane will do
So, this album had Rick Ruben co-producing, and it's their most accessible album in terms of production. Their later stuff got more challenging ("Cassandra Gemini" is probably the song that first springs to mind, in terms of "difficult to listen to but still good."). They had a heavy Latin Jazz influence on their stuff. They're from El Paso (fun bit of trivia: former Democratic presidential primary candidate Beto O'Rourke actually played bass in a band with Cedric, the singer, back in the day).
My favorite tracks from them are probably "Meccamputecture," "Cygnus... Vismund Cygnus," "Day of the Baphomets," "L'Via L'Viaquez," "Cassandra Gemini," "Cotopaxi," "Goliath," and "Take the Veil Cerpin Taxt." But most of their stuff scratches my itch.
They are VERY challenging, though, at times. They have a song that is an acoustic-guitar-backed Spanish-language prayer to Satan that ends with some really janky distortion that is... Well, it's rewarding, but you have to get through the rind.
Never heard of them. I really enjoy it!
The members of The Mars Volta had a band before this band called At the Drive In. They put out one album "Relationship of Command" - I believe it was called - before they broke up and reformed as THe Mars Volta. It's an awesome album and it spawned a hit single called "One Armed Scissor" . I"d love to see you guys react to "One Armed Scissor". Keep up the good work!
I KNEW THIS DAY WOULD COME
This is great... It's for aquired taste for sure
I love the Mars Volta! Just do the album in order
Excellent song, Next is Van Der Graaf Generator - Meurglys III
The reason people may dislike the song or the band in general is because it is not for the weak of heart. By that I mean, it takes a very VERY active listener to be able to listen and pick up what TMV is putting down. This album is flat out perfection if I've ever heard it. To dislike it, is in my eyes, admitting you have no clue what's going on with the music.
Love this album and TMV! Would love to hear Eria Tarka or Viscera Eyes!
Can we take a sec to acknowledge Flea was the bass player on this album and he fits the band like a fucking glove?
I had no idea wow that’s crazy
Interesting music!
Cicatriz Esp is the best song from this album, you guys should do that one 👍
Thank you guys. Love it. It's great that you guys honor the bands from the '60s and '70s that I grew up with. But I would like to hear the bands that formed your listening groove. :)
I wish I could listen to this for the first time again. 🤯😍
How could I forget the Mars Volta?!?
it gets points for sounding like nothing I've heard before. Also, it doesn't sound like they're trying too hard. It works for me.
The production was good, because it was produced by RICK FUCKING REUBIN. The man, the myth, the legend. Fuck the haters, glad u guys enjoyed this.
i love to see people first react to my favorite bands kind a remember my first time too
