Owls are my favorite birds. I love that they are nocturnal birds, those thick legs, and of course those beautiful eyes. They always seem calm. I just love everything about Owl. I even picked my in game names Owls :D. Thanks for covering this one.

I had one in my shop about four months ago. I live in central FL and have a shop in an agricultural area. I came in around 11 PM to lock up and he was on my tractor. I tried to shoo him out the bay doors but he went for my table saw behind me and I didn't want him to hurt himself by accident flying around the shop so I just left the bay doors open and watched him. I watched him for quite a while and was able to get really close to him. I didn't know what kind owl it was and judging by Coyotes distance I was probably too close, but it didn't do any sort of dance until I was at nearly touching distance, so that's where I backed off and took a seat. He didn't do much but watch me watching him and bob his head when I got close, but it was still super cool. After a while I assumed he wasn't leaving because I was there so I went out to watch from a window in my house so he might leave safely through the doors, but he never did. I went back in and locked up figuring he'd be fine overnight and I'd get a pro to make sure he can get out safely the next day, but when I opened my shop he was gone. 2 AM he was still walking around my table saw and by 7am he was out of there. I don't know how he left or if these buggers can get in and out through attics or some such, but they're super cool, and must be really clever to figure out a way in and out. The only thing I can figure is he crawled through my sawdust vent, but that's just because he flew in that direction and seemed to favor the table near the vent, I saw no trace of dust on the actual bird.

We have a nest across the street from us, and sometimes I would see them flying around and hissing looking for food. I would try to mimic the same noise and they would come flying towards me! One started to hover over my head! I wasn't sure if I were insulting it or saying, "Hey! There's food over here!" But they are just sooo cute!

If you watchers out there ever see a strange burrow that could fit a chihuahua with little pegs of wood nearby, don't touch it! I once participated in a Burrowing Owl Conservation Program with Arizona Game and Fish. We dug artificial burrows for owls who lost their natural habitat. We released them into a protective netted area until they claimed the burrow as their own.

The burrowing owl can make a hiss in its burrow and the sound bounces around the burrow making a rattlesnake sound to warn off predators. They are also endangered because they need gophers and badgers to make their homes. First a gopher makes a hole and then a badger comes to go eat the badger and digs a bigger hole to get the gopher and the burrowing owl lives in there. But gophers are a pest to farmers so they kill them, and without gophers there are no badgers to dig a bigger hole. That is why they are endangered.

I am a volunteer at the San Diego Zoo and I teach guests about our conservation efforts and these guys are one of the many species we are helping. They are very important for the grassland ecosystem and unfortunately, their population is taking a significant decline in especially, Southern California. Some of our efforts include releasing ground squirrels in attempts to create more borrows for the owls to live in.

I live in the Phoenix metro area here in Arizona and every evening at sunset I walk around my neighborhood. I see this little burrowing owl every evening and he seems very friendly and docile. He lets me approach to within a few feet of him I just stand a nd watch him for a few minutes. Are they an endangered or protected species? I look forward to our nightly meetings and have even named him "Ollie", he is such a beautiful and wonderful little bird.

The song, "Stuart" from the Dead Milkmen brought me here.
    And I quote.
"Anyway, Ten Thirty the other night, I go out in my yard and there's the Wurster kid, looking up in the tree!
I say "What are you looking for?"
And he says "I'm looking for my burrow owl!"
And I say "Jumpin' Jesus on a pogo stick!
Everybody knows the burrow owl lives in a hole in the ground!
Why the hell do you think they call it a burrow owl, anyway!?"

So are burrowing owls not nocturnal? And if they are nocturnal then how did they become so well adjusted to daylight?
I suppose I've always imagined owls strongly disliking daylight, as if it would harm them, but I've got nothing to base that on.
