I’m originally from Connecticut, the “witch hazel capitol of the world.” The indigenous Native Americans discovered its medicinal properties centuries ago. My dad always splashed on some witch hazel after shaving and I do too. It’s a lovely mild astringent and skin toner.
I allways carry a razor in my rucksack when spending days or weeks in the wilderness, it helps me feeling hygenic and to maintain mental discipline and high moral. Never skept a morning shave for the last 3 years, doesn't matter the circumstances 😆.
Hey Ash! Greetings from Atlanta! I ordered all the elements used in your video via Amazon. The Merkur razor and the Proraso pre-shave arrived today and I had my initial shave. Wow, what a difference! My father taught me to shave 45+ years ago using a safety razor, but most of the time since, I’ve been using some brand of disposable, multi-blade razor. Those days are over! Thank you for making “old school” new again! Warm rgds, Geoff
A real chap always stands his ground, doesn't fall to laziness (like in the modern era) and shaves in any situation even if it means with icy cold water if that's what is available. I will look for the Reuzel.
My father told a story of WW2, before he got shipped over to Europe. He was guarding German prisoners, and they got up in the mornings to break the ice in a bucket to wash and shave every morning.
@@ryangrimm9305 that's what I mean. A gent stands his ground no matter what. Nowadays out of laziness (or thinking its trendy) many men shave twice a week and walk around like hedgehogs.
I'm of the same opinion. I allways shave, no matter the circumstances. Love shaving in cold mornings in the countryside 😆, never forget to include a razor in my rucksack. Discipline, hygene and moral, all together in a simple morning routine.
I tried Reuzel today for the first time. No pre-shave, just Reuzel, cold water and a Henson AL13, followed by an alum block, Thayer's Toner and Nivea sensitive aftershave balm. Reuzel was the only new ingredient and it worked just as well as anything else (TOBS, Proraso, etc.) I will be using it again, but a bit less of it. Being the first time I used more than needed...
I started to use a double edged razor in about 2018. I admit, I'm on my 2nd handset as the thread broke on my first one after about 3 years, but the replacement was about £15. The Astra blades I bought in 2018 (200 blades for about £20) are still going strong. Benefits of shaving like this? 1. It's an experience, a bit of meditative time in the morning 2. It costs a lot less than buying cartridge razor systems 3. There is far less plastic waste so it is much better for the environment 4. I'm putting far less gunk on my face (no aerosol shave gels etc)
I use the exact same setup. (Except for the handle). I swear by the combination Merkur, Feather and Proraso. I too had been searching for the perfect shave because my facial hair is prone to ingrow, but with this setup all my problems are gone now.
Hello Ash. Try out the Slant Bar Double Edged Razor. With my Legion Slant made in Italy, & my Edwin Jagger made in Sheffield. I've never looked back on Disposable or Cartridge Razors.
Floris is lovely stuff, perhaps something in their product line for every chap from Ian Fleming to Sir Winston and several royal's over the years. I believe they do bespoke fragrances too, for the well heeled. The use of a brushless cream caught me off guard. Face lathering is the most enjoyable part of the shave for me. For travel I like the Palmolive shave stick. Pair that with a Simpson Wee Scott brush and you are good to go without a large kit. The Reuzel shave cream contains witch hazel and rosemary extract. Perhaps you could skip the separate application of witch hazel when traveling, and not miss it. The company claims that this product is vegan. That has me scratching my head as to where the stearic acid is sourced.
Great vid Ash, a Franken razor nice. Not a fan of Reuzel but will try it once more to be fair and give it a chance. Yes language and your words elevate you more than clothes and things. Your speech and how you carry yourself speaks volumes about you. Enjoy the warmer weather! Starlight
Nice shave and discussion of your technique Ash. I'm a three pass shaver, 7 days a week and find that the mild razors with a good blade is the way to go for my daily pleasure. Have a great day and weekend
Quite an nice regimen you have there! I use a brushless shave lotion myself, but I do still like to get out the brush and a mug soap every other shave. I like the feel of it tremendously.
I plead guilty to alternating between my Braun series 9 during weekdays, I have two children so they take most of my time up but the weekends are a treat for me when I get my Gillette slim adjustable out with a feather blade and the shaving cream/brush out. My little way of relaxing. I will have to give the shaving cream a go. I always favour the porasa shaving balm (original) as it so refreshing and aborbs so easily, the trick is finding a neutral moisturiser that does not clash with my deodorant and cologne. Sounds silly to some but to me it is one of those "chap things" I do. Great video as always Sir.
I've started shaving this way after years of crappy plastic razors, the entire experience from pre shave to the witch hazel at the end is amazing, and @REUZEL is the best shave cream I've ever used, the smell alone before I even tried it was mind-blowing!
Lovely! If you enjoy the actual shaving process, you may like to use a harder soap and a brush and lather bowl. A good local brand for you would be Wickhams. Cheers and thanks for the video.
Traditional shaving is definitely a relaxing ritual that I would recommend to anyone. Feeling clean and fresh are both understatements. Having said that, I have come to the conclusion that it is wrong to recommend razors, blades, soaps or other related products. What works for me may not work for others. The combination of skin type, hair type, hair growth direction AND taste, makes shaving strictly personal. What I always do is strongly encourage other gentlemen to try as many different combinations as they possibly can. That is the only way to go. 🙂
