The Crying Game: A Scientific Voyage into the Tear Ducts of Caleb Williams and Bill Belichick | PTFO

  • A viral video of a weeping Caleb Williams, the top prodigy in this week’s draft, “scares the sh*t out of a lot of NFL teams.” So correspondent Dave Fleming breaks out the tissues - and a stack of research - to discover what the science of crying disproves about the pseudo-science of scouting; why a Super Bowl locker room was like a scene out of “The Notebook”; and how even the Darth Vader of football (allegedly) choked up. Plus: Domonique Foxworth names names - and changes our basic understanding of the most masculine of sports.

I came here thinking Caleb would be trashed. I left knowing more about crying and the role of family as its triggers. Fair and informed. I am now a fan and will be touching base with Finds Out. Thanks Pablo.

The world would be a better place if there were more people who watched PTFO than watch the nuclear waste dump that is Outkick

Throughout the history of the NFL Draft, professional football scouts have proven exactly one thing; They have absolutely zero ability to predict who will be a successful NFL quarterback. None. So you'll have to excuse me if I take this nugget from an anonymous scout with the biggest grain of salt that has ever existed.

That was exactly my thought. We want players who care a lot but we’re gonna dictate HOW they care? What are these people doing?

Just found out there’s virtually no qualifications to be an NFL scout. Can’t believe it isn’t a licensed profession. They make-or-break the futures of thousands of young athletes every year. Teachers must have a 4-year degree and hundreds of hours of experience to be full time.

What do teachers and talent scouts have in common with each other? Please tell me. One us evaluating Adult professional athletes with zero to minimal instruction, and writting a report on what they see and giving it to their employer to see if it would be a good fit for the "company" aka team to "hire" aka draft the 18+ year old plus professional athletes. They are not trusted alone to be a supervisor of other people's kids, they aren't responsible for educational instruction of what we have collectively said should be a base level of knowledge for any individual capable of entering the work force when becoming an adult....... what do those jobs possibly have in common with each other?

And there are only 1696 active players at anyone time plus practice squad players. There are close to one million players that play HS football, only 81000 are able to play college, and 250 to 300 people get picked to be on a preseason roster for an NFL team, and a lot of them will get cut before the final inseaon roster. How many schools would you like offering a major in something for something that affects 300 people getting ready to make more money than most people will ever see in their lives?

Scouts talking about how "weird" a quarterback prospect is, in a league where the likes of Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson have championship rings.

Is it any surprise? These are the same dudes who said Mahomes freelances too much and his skills don’t translate to the NFL, or that Lamar Jackson isn’t a QB, but that they should spend top 10 picks on Jake Locker and Blaine Gabbert because they’re tall and athletic. I can’t believe we still listen to these dudes

It wasn't a meaningless game. It was their 3rd loss of the season which he knew meant it knocked them out of contention of a PAC 12 Championship which inadvertently meant no shot at the College football playoffs. So hardly an insignificant outcome from that game.

You missed with this one Pablo. Big time. You spent half the episode inexplicably making Bill Belichick as some sort of standard as to whether it’s okay to cry, and the other half mercilessly mocking Caleb Williams, not for seeking solace in his mother, but rather his “mommy”. Was that supposed to be funny? Was that supposed to be any indication that you understood YOUR OWN assignment? Then you rush a tacked on ending about how we shouldn’t be so quick to judge Williams. But you never sufficiently made your case as to why. Also interesting is that you chose to only frame the conversation from a very male-centric point of view. Where’s the examination of women in sports? Or is it that women are just expected to cry? A better, smart episode would have examined how men are essentially as emotional as anyone, they may not cry, but what is punching walls (or teammates) anything other than men who also can’t keep their emotions in check? Breaking shit is acceptable, crying is not. Just a really half-baked and poorly executed episode

Let's be honest, the hype around this young man is ridiculous. You would think he won consecutive national titles at USC. I don't think he is going to be a bust, but it would not shock me at all if he is just half as good as everyone says he is. It's okay to be skeptical because since all of you trash a former scout, the ones who are hyping him are people who only see Caleb Williams through the prism of highlights instead of watching an actual college game of his. I'm a Bears fan, and I could tell you, he doesn't know what he's in for. If he doesn't produce the dynasty that all of you say he is capable of, Chicago will unleash a torrent of criticism his way that he will wish he was back at USC. And it won't be all his fault, it's because of all you believed him to be something he isn't.

The best two qbs in the draft, imo, are Williams and Penix, but both have shown emotional stability issues...
