    Now THAT is some smooth trombone work. Simply amazing. Very beautiful and swingin'.

    What a great pianist. I mean, not that these trombonists are anything short of amazing, but it was good to finally hear a little improv and true jazz style between the two videos.

    Just perfect in all ways. That's the way a trombone must sound like. Gentlemen, listen to the trombone gods.

    I agree with you that they swing like a set of set cats in this piece. However, this was taken in 1995. They've gotten better since then, especially Alessi.

    As much as I love Alessi and Lindberg and the gang this just cracks me up. They are so SQUARE and out of their element. But I love watching this and seeing how uncomfortable they look when they aren't playing. It is great. Oh and Alessi kills that bass line. Love that.

    Now this is what trombones were made for, not background noise. And I play trombone, so to me this was...well, I guess I can say that I have a new way of thinking. Thank you all for this experience. Gentlemen, good day.

    I keep lostening to this, and I keep loving it, but when I play along I want to hang back, and they're pushing along... it's so difficult.

    Not bad, considering that they're the finest classical cats around. Their classical training shows in a number of spots, but sometimes it also sounds like they're really getting it too, so...

    I was there at the concert. It was a really great moment. Joe had a great sound, Scott was also great though he was having a bad day, CL was as always and so were the other two Joe's album is much better speaking of improv but in this night that was not the point. Five of the greatest trombonists living in earth today adjusted their schedules to fly into Tokyo and get together and play in one 'band', taking turns on the solos and the leads, although Joe ended up leading the most part.

    THIS IS HONESTLY WHAT CLASSICAL PLAYERS THINK JAZZ IS

  • @herminestover

    OK, this piece lacks negritudinosity from jump street, but one cannot deny the skill of the players, eh? People have accused the MJQ of the same flaw, and of course, I disagree with them in the matter of the MJQ. I think it displays an amazing desire on the part of the musicians to DO IT ALL. and for this I salute them.

    Piano solo? I thought this was a jazz trombone quintet. Alessi and Lindberg should have had long solos well actually all of them should of had solos

    Dont get me wrong, after revisiting this video, it sounds very good. But if I had my choice between this or Carl and Frank. I would choose the latter. This particular ensemble doesnt swing very hard either. I mean thats not a downer either, they are classical players after all, theyre probably not running home so they can practice on their ii-V7-I licks.

    Strange as Slide Hampton ,Steve Turre ,Ray Anderson,play large bore trombones and are world class jazzers ,I think your comments are just petty nitpicking really...I enjoyed the performance and their lovely sounds even on large bores...and I think they would be the first to admit they are not trying to masqurade as Jazzers they just having fun

  • @DrMichaelRath

    Yes I know that one, that's a lot better indeed, but still not what it shoud be I think... Alessi shoud stick to what he's good at

  • @herminestover

    Oh you mis-spelled it, it is "Negritudinosity". you know what it means. I made up this word DECADES ago.

    Dudes, the recording Alessi has of this on his "New York Legends" album is so much better. Mostly because he didn't bother with a bunch of stiffs like CL and Hartman and Solkar. He got some real jazzers in there and this adaption for trombones really cooked. That and this rhythm section isn't helping.
    And if anyone disagrees, please spare me the whole "you don't know music" crap. Nobody knows what other people hear.

    Of course, it "sounds" fine, from a technical aspect, but it just doesnt swing, its not cool, which what jazz is, just no soul, after it was Rosolino who said "It has to mean something everytime you play it".

  • @Zombbg4

    classical players playing jazz kinda rubs me the wrong way. just don't dig it.

  • @macree01
    @macree01 16 років тому +1

    No soul, No groove, no feeling, and it swings about as much as rachmonioff paino concerto. Im telling Frank Rosolino and Carl Fontana would turn in their grave if they heard this.

  • @ottsirq
    @ottsirq 16 років тому

    Agreed. They clearly don't listen to jazz or even know what swing feels like. This is embarrassing. Proof that "most of the notes being there" means nothing.
    Would they ever deign to present a classical piece without having done their homework?

  • @JonBlondell
    @JonBlondell 9 років тому +1

    Extremely square. And smeary and no balls. And everything you get from "legit" bone players. You could take session players from any city over 100,000 population, and they would nail it! Geez!

  • @fvboeschoten
    @fvboeschoten 16 років тому

    Great, great classical trombone players, but they just should NOT do this....sounds awful, swings like a German apfelstrudel... Fontana, Rosolino and others did not try to play the classical stuff either
