Insightful vid. Had 3 PS2's all getting disc read error after a year. Had an original PS3 for 3 years until I got the disc read error, replaced the blue ray drive, got another 1 1/2 years until ylod (4 1/2 years total), now got a PS3 slim, hopefully that will keep me going until the next generation.
for those who don't know the reason the Ps3 and 360 get the RLOD/RROD is because of the lead free solder used for the GPU and cpu processors in them and after a while will dry and crack.
hell man every 1st gen playstation brand anything has kicked the bucket and needed to be replaced by 5-10 additional versions. look at the psp 0_0 hell the ps2 and ps1 are nearly as bad
Hey man, how are you? My PS3 60GB I had for 2 years, and it has never been opened. I'm surprised it has lasted 13 years, and it got the yellow light finally. My brother is going to fix it. I am going to put graphite thermal pads in it, a fan mod, and capacitors if they need them. Recently people have found out, that it's not just the dry thermal paste that causes the yellow light. It's also bad capacitors, and the lead-free solder.
The funny thing is that I still have my PS1 that I got back in 1998 that still works, and that has moving parts in it as well. My Super NES that has been collecting dust in my closet still works, and I got that and my brother and I shared the costs to get the system. That system still works today. It beats my mind why this console generation introduces a feat when lots of people have broken systems. My XBox360 just red ringed when trying out kinect. I hope that the PS4 doesn't have issues
I agree. I been lucky not to get it yet but I have a psx and run perfectly find thats how should be. I seen many Atari 2600 systems work to this day and most companies can't even try making a console to last besides one but the Wii isn't powerful enough to handle most other games.
my ps3 got the ylod last night...i didnt even know this problem existed...its funny how my nintendo 64 and super nintendo still work.....I respect what you stand for jak
My Gamecube lasted for about 8 years or so. I have an original playstation that still works perfectly. My Gameboy still works. And, believe it or not, I still have our family's original NES fron 1985....and it still works. Well, as well as NEs's ever worked.
Totally agree with you. I shouldn't have to worry or think about my console dying when buying a new game console it's totally unacceptible. Also making excuses/justifications is essentually saying to Microsoft and Sony that, "Hey it's okay that the life expectancy is very short, but i'm still happy to fork over my hard earn money to you."
yeah i agree with the techie saying that blowing out cold air is bad because it's supposed to blow out warm air or hot whatever it is....because thats the heat sink's job to let the hot air out...
thanks for the video.I totally agree with you.Im on my 6th ps3 in 3 years.Im not happy right now. 2 of the ps3 were bricked by sony and there updates and no i didnt hack my ps3,i just traded my harddrive out.Ive had 3 blu ray drive failures.I have a 320 harddrive in my ps3,got tired of sending it out and paying for it to be fixed.my latest problem is overheating and am watching your video to put the thermal paste on ,so thanks for the info.
I still got a PS2 and a Nintendo GameCube that both work perfectly fine. These idiots say that constantly playing DVDs in it ruins it but I mainly use it for a DVD player and I've had it since May 31st 2002 and never had a problem with it. Might get rid of the GameCube though since we got a Wii now.
@jakthebomb the YLOD hapopens because the game console is running at 90 degrees for a period of time and that happens because the console has the holes where the air passes are blocked with dust and the solders of the gpu start to fissures, that's the main reason for the ylod, you have to clean those holes or radiators by opening the console and clean the dust up, btw i am telling you this because I think you should teach everybody how to do that ,one way to repair ,
Launch PS2 - Still working to this day, the only minor problem it has, it takes a little longer to read discs. PSP - R button is electronically stuck PS3 - October 2008 Blu-ray failure, February 2009 blu-ray failure again, February 2010 YLOD
Planned Obsolescence is the deliberate shortening of product life spans to guarantee consumer demand. It has been a while since any product has been built to last. Companys have found a way to get us on team A or team B to promote loyalty to a brand regardless of quality. I.E. you spend x amount of dollars on a product so it must be the best. No one wants to spend their money on something and admit that it sucks.
My ps2 fat is 11-12 years old and still works well. Mostly the ps2's that i've heard have stopped working were just not taken care of. Sony need to step up their game...
you can thank ROHS (reduction of hazardous substances) for that. The solder they used in the 360 and PS3 under the GPU's and CPUs is tin based so it isnt strong at all and will crack, losing connection to the motherboard after a few years of use. The Wii uses lead solder and has lasted longer than 360 or PS3. The only way to fix your PS3 is either to mail it for reballing in a reputable repair center than sending it to Sony as they will put tin solder spheres in again and it may not work.
Sega Genesis, NES, SNES, N64 were built like bricks!!! In fairness, the YLOD sounds like an Nvidia bumpgate issue with failed solder points of the RSX GPUs. Nvidia saved $ on poor soldering which later resulted in millions of failed GeForce 8/9 series (RSX is GeForce 7 based GPU). Thankfully Nvidia uses higher quality soldering now and regardless PS4 is rumored to have an AMD GPU. YLOD shouldn't be an issue this time related to solder points. I totally agree with Jakthebomb. :)
@CristinaDeLaRawr yeah don't thermal paste it its not gonna get rid of ylod but you have to do it professionally by replacing the solder and stuff and doing that is the way to prevent ylod but you have to be a good tech or something to do that
No. He has no basis in fact saying they last 1-3 years. I've had 2 PS3's since 2007, both still work perfectly, and I'm willing to bet anything that as long as I take as good of care of both of them as I have for the past 5 years, that they will still be working in 5 years time. Your console has a much much much much higher chance of not failing than it does of failing.
@shankly1985 I played with my PS2 to death and that system still works. I had played my PS1 to death, and that system still works. It still makes no excuse for Sony or Microsoft to make systems that breaks in a matter of months to a few years.
its the same for cars, there is way too much technology these days to where it would be cheaper to buy a new car than to replace this and that on a modern car, too much technology.
My original fat ps3 only worked for 3 years... I treated it exactly like my ps2 which works ever since i got it for over 6 years... This isn't the user's fault, this is Sony's problem... I really hope the next generation consoles step up their game.
i apologize for sending you a message on psn. i'm jessethedragon on there. sorry if it annoyed you, but again thanks for all these vids. i agree that the life of consoles should be 10+ years my NES still works 26 yrs, SNES 20 yrs, still works, Sega Genesis 17 yrs. my dad's 800xl, still works fat ps2 9 yrs, works half got disc read errors on certain games, fat ps3 4yrs hopping it won't die ps3 slim 1 yrs, don't care for the slim. this shows your right about consoles lasting. take care friend
Completely agree with you. I don't have a PS3 but I really want one and I hope to get one soon. I recently hooked up my old N64, PS1, and PS2 and all three of them still work. My 360 on the other hand? I'm on my fourth one right now. Fuckin' Micro$oft.
biggest problem with wii is disc read failure. I read that the wii has a 6.8% failure rate. That is not near as bad as the others, but still not great.
I've encountered a problem with one system or another. NES: Doesn't load properly-contacts have contaminants. SNES: Something went wrong with the graphics & system stopped working. PS: Laser went dead. PS2: Still works but loads kinda slow. PS3: Frame rate issues. PSP: Screen has some weird blotches in it. I feel sorry for those who bought a gaming system that dies on them after a year, but i don't blame Sony for selling crappy electronics, i blame the industry for allowing this to continue.
My 60GB lasted the 2 years I had it. It has never been opened, I'm surprised that it lasted 13 years all this time. I need it fixed as it has the yellow light. I am going to have graphite thermal pads on it, a fan mod, and replacement capacitors if it needs it. My brother is going to fix it, and jailbreak it for webMan on it for fan settings.
peoples like you and me understand how the methods works and how to deal with it, but what you can say for someone who dont even know whats inside the ps3 and he came up with ideas that will make you amazed i mean there is allot of peoples out there just looking for Fans and Likes and popularity, they are not really care about if someone ps3 have a some kind of a failure they just keep coming up with new tips new stuff thats dont even going to make someone ps3 work better,
that's completely true because i got the ylod on my ps3 40gb and i never did any damage to it, i cleaned it regular and never dropped it etc. But yet it got the ylod... i was pissed!
my ps3 is the original 60 GB one. Lately, it has been heating up easily in about 30 minutes. I bought it the first day it came out. Is this a symptom of yellow light of death jak? Do you think that i should plan on getting another ps3 or what is your opinion?
Damn, well does that mean my 5 year old PS3 is a lucky one? It has never had any issues and I have never had to get it repaired, although only one thing in it has been changed and that is the HDD. I had to upgrade it from 40gb to 250gb. Although I am not one of those idiots that laugh in the face of people who's consoles have broken, I wouldn't put any money on the future of my ps3, who knows, it could break tomorrow and never come back on.
Either my console just died on it's own suddenly, or their new update fucked it up. As soon as it finished downloading and it was going to do the reboot, it never turned on again, no red light no thing.
My 12 year old ps3 ( CECHGxx) motherboard SEM-001. Released in 2007. one week ago i was like " my ps3 will be still working after 30 years... week later she got YLOD ( Yellow light of death) What should i do?
Don't be fooled about the ps3. I had mine for about 4 to 5 years since the ps3 has been out (I lost track of time) and I thought mine was invincible as long as i kept it clean, but it still died recently and I am pissed. If the YLOD happens to you don't be suprised about it because it is happening to everybody, even people like you and me that take good care of their systems.
@moderndude1234 yeah I know, and when it happens I won't be buying anymore ps3s -__- or consoles if there going to just break down on me within a year or so
@JDonahue79 I think its more down to these's console's been much more powerful and alot more heat coming from them, am not saying am 100% just my guess ;) Also I say people these's day play lot more hour's on console gaming, with having online etc so more chance consoles will fuck up.
so if i were to fix my ps3s thermal paste thingy manually theres no way to tell how long it will last or should it hold off for a while i dont want to keep replacing paste
What do you mean by take care ? My Ps3 obviously never fell to the ground, it never hit anything, it has never even got dirty. I took perfect care of it for years. TODAY I bought Black Ops 2, and TODAY, while playing it, i got the damn YLOD.
fxxk PS3 and Sony, they produced faulty products and force us to pay for the repair fees again and again or simply want us to buy a new PS3, but jacthebomb you are the man! i love your video too!
U r right jack the bomb but on top of it 2 they aren't much airflow in it eather look at desk tops PC u can actually keep it on all the time u can't keep laptops or game system on tht long eather I went to computer tech school 2
@CristinaDeLaRawr ps1=laser died aswell ps2 fat=laser died ps3 slim=working scratching discs psp working wii=working xbox=completely dead xbox 360=rrod xbox 360=rrod xbox 360=banned xbox 360 slim=laser died gb sp=working gba=working gba=working gba=working nds=working nintendo=working dreamcast working n64=working gamecube=working
Your biggest oversight is you're referring to the original PS3s, NOT the slims. So when your PS3s died in "2 years" you didn't add in the years of service the console worked prior to you purchasing them. I have had a second hand first gen PS3 for over 4 years now, and it has just now started to show its age. Which is how I found your channel, FYI. Maybe you were referring to the slims, but last time I checked, PS3 Slims don't come in 60gb or 40gb models. Those are the models you say you owned.
This is not my case at all. I had the original ps3 from janurary 2007 and it broke in 2012 because I didn't clean the dust. Now I got the slim, and I believe that it's gonna last long. Xbox is worse. It had the most brake downs in console history. 3 out of 10 broke down in 2005
i dont know if someone noticed that there is allot of websites out there who just wants, ''make your ps3 work better for 10$ bring your shutdown ps3 to us we will fix it for 20$'' like that the reason why people keeps looking for this shit on UA-cam because of sony didnt offer to fix their ps3 for free even when they came up and released the the very first ps3 and they was know that its for testing but they didnt tell people who bought,
PS3 life is not short It depends on how you took care of them.If you want to maintain it cool then use a cooling fan/pan or place it in an Airconditioned room where you want to play.PS3 slim has less chance on overheating, your very lucky xbox360 uses poorer thermal paste and has a weaker hardware than the PS3.PS3 slim has more advanced hardware than the xbox so it overheats less.Xbox360 is known to have RRoD.
Dear Sony, I bought my ps3 from my uncle who replaced his motherboard with cpu&gpu etc. He only used it for 2 hours to see whether it would function correctly. i bought it for 150 euro. and after fucking 3 moths the thing commited its suicide. WTF? my ps2 was bought somewhere in 2003 and up till 2day is still fucking works. My laptop has all the chips and hardware the ps3 has got and why does it still fucking works? Sony, I'm gonna fix this=, but if it happens again... ill see u in court sony
ps1 still working but doesnt play disc ps2 fat-dead ps2 slim working ps3 fat working but has had ylod but fixed it on my own ps3 slim working psp dead wii working nintendo gameboy working gameboy color working

Yay :D My PS3 is on its fifth year and still working like a charm!
for those who don't know the reason the Ps3 and 360 get the RLOD/RROD is because of the lead free solder used for the GPU and cpu processors in them and after a while will dry and crack.
This guy needs more subscribers. Nuff said.
if only ps3 has the same life span as the ps2. cos my ps2 fat is still working.
hell man every 1st gen playstation brand anything has kicked the bucket and needed to be replaced by 5-10 additional versions. look at the psp 0_0 hell the ps2 and ps1 are nearly as bad

my ps3 got the ylod last night...i didnt even know this problem existed...its funny how my nintendo 64 and super nintendo still work.....I respect what you stand for jak
Never had an issue with my ps3, I have it since 2007, the 40gb version... sad to see that's not the case with most of us...
My Gamecube lasted for about 8 years or so. I have an original playstation that still works perfectly. My Gameboy still works. And, believe it or not, I still have our family's original NES fron 1985....and it still works. Well, as well as NEs's ever worked.
My Sega Genesis has been working for 20 years. My cousin's PS3 worked for 2.
I like your videos man. You tell like it is.
My fat PS3 is in its 11 year now and it runs just fine without any issues, without ever opening it or changing the termopaste..
ever since i saw i this video i had almost no fate on MW2 or battlefield 3. Now i want to play metal slug on the ps2.

@jakthebomb
i agree with you :) some people just dont get the concept and some gamers just dont know what a dam heatsink does...
Customer support form sony told me " Well, your PS2 is 5 years old, its lived a good life". It had disc read error. PS 1 still running.
thanks for the video.I totally agree with you.Im on my 6th ps3 in 3 years.Im not happy right now.
2 of the ps3 were bricked by sony and there updates and no i didnt hack my ps3,i just traded my harddrive out.Ive had 3 blu ray drive failures.I have a 320 harddrive in my ps3,got tired of sending it out and paying for it to be fixed.my latest problem is overheating and am watching your video to put the thermal paste on ,so thanks for the info.

i hawe a ps3 slim 160gb model its 2 yrs old and still alive
I say wii dont fail has much, because they not has powerful same has ps2 etc.
But you defo right 10 years is about right.
i apologize for sending you a message on psn. i'm jessethedragon on there. sorry if it annoyed you, but again thanks for all these vids. i agree that the life of consoles should be 10+ years my NES still works 26 yrs, SNES 20 yrs, still works, Sega Genesis 17 yrs. my dad's 800xl, still works fat ps2 9 yrs, works half got disc read errors on certain games, fat ps3 4yrs hopping it won't die ps3 slim 1 yrs, don't care for the slim. this shows your right about consoles lasting. take care friend

MY Nintendo 64 (1992-present)
Sony PS3 (2006-2010)
biggest problem with wii is disc read failure. I read that the wii has a 6.8% failure rate. That is not near as bad as the others, but still not great.
i've had my ps3 for nearly 4 years man
Had to buy a slim because of YLOD. That's extra 300 euros to Sony because they make products that break after a couple of years.

My PS3 fat lasted ONLY 28 months, prior to it getting the YLOD. I tried getting it fixed. However, it messed up.......again.
that's completely true because i got the ylod on my ps3 40gb and i never did any damage to it, i cleaned it regular and never dropped it etc. But yet it got the ylod... i was pissed!
@CristinaDeLaRawr
SLIMS CAN STILL GET YLOD BUT NOT AS MUCH AS THE OLDER ONES (sorry about the HUGE CAPs)
aw, i wanted a Ps3.
Has the technology goes up, reliability goes down, and that goes with all new products..
Btw, that song is catchy.
my ps3 is the original 60 GB one. Lately, it has been heating up easily in about 30 minutes. I bought it the first day it came out. Is this a symptom of yellow light of death jak? Do you think that i should plan on getting another ps3 or what is your opinion?

Nice video man ! My PS3 lasted for around 5 years which is still bullshit ! I got the YLOD yesterday.
my n64 and ps3 have never had a long term problem
@CristinaDeLaRawr
because of sony being a horrible thermal pasting i suggest just take care of it until that day comes
Either my console just died on it's own suddenly, or their new update fucked it up. As soon as it finished downloading and it was going to do the reboot, it never turned on again, no red light no thing.
well im lucky i guess cause iv'e had the same ps3 since i got it on release day so about 5 or 6 years
My 12 year old ps3 ( CECHGxx) motherboard SEM-001. Released in 2007. one week ago i was like " my ps3 will be still working after 30 years... week later she got YLOD ( Yellow light of death)

"i should say the life expectancy is *video needs to load* what??!!
3 out of 10 broke down in 2005
nice vid
i dont know if someone noticed that there is allot of websites out there who just wants, ''make your ps3 work better for 10$ bring your shutdown ps3 to us we will fix it for 20$'' like that the reason why people keeps looking for this shit on UA-cam because of sony didnt offer to fix their ps3 for free even when they came up and released the the very first ps3 and they was know that its for testing but they didnt tell people who bought,
Yo why do blue ray drives fail ?
I think it Economic Rules ....
PS3 life is not short It depends on how you took care of them.If you want to maintain it cool then use a cooling fan/pan or place it in an Airconditioned room where you want to play.PS3 slim has less chance on overheating, your very lucky xbox360 uses poorer thermal paste and has a weaker hardware than the PS3.PS3 slim has more advanced hardware than the xbox so it overheats less.Xbox360 is known to have RRoD.
so which do you prefer,PS3 or Xbox?
Dear Sony,
I bought my ps3 from my uncle who replaced his motherboard with cpu&gpu etc.
Sony, I'm gonna fix this=, but if it happens again...
ill see u in court sony
ps3's or Xboxes i think PS3's ylod has a 10 percent chanse and the xboxes 40-50 percent i dont know about the slim but
SHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIT MY N64 is 17 year old that shit still bounsin

Long living consoles aren't money makers. A console that crashes after a few years will make money. Fucking sucks, but that's business unfortunately.
What do you mean?
oops i mean i have a ps3 slim and still alive
