- Short film of my Tamiya r/c WW1 Mk IV tank.
Visit my channel for more rc conversions: / @gonzomechanic7196
The model's appearance is based on the 'Lodestar III' vehicle which can be seen in the excellent Army Museum in Brussels, Belgium. Supposedly the only surviving example in its original colors.
Paint stencils for the name and number provided by the very efficient Mal Mayfield at Miracle Masks.
The model has smoke exhaust and pyro effects for the guns. How realistic this is or isn't can be assessed from this video here:

Hope you like it.
As usual it was filmed - with considerable patience - by my eldest daughter.
The music was from here:

Quick update: I had to convert this tank to rc myself as the kit at that time provided only a single motor and no r/c features. However, apparently a fully r/c version is now available from Tamiya. - Наука та технологія
Yeah this video just persuaded me to buy that kit. No shame at all, I mean look at it! It’s glorious!
How much is it and where can I find it?
@@colinw1552 some of them probably at verdun
This is so cool and underrated as hell.
I wanna have this as a pet 😍
I guess so

yes master
All I can say is "WOW!" in addition: great work! I am very impressed! Thank you for sharing your amazing handiwork with us!
Thank you, these videos were meant to be fun - so am always pleased if someone likes them.
Even the exhaust? Amazing!
It must have been an absolute nightmare to be in one of those things, rocking back and forth in the blasted war torn terrain in a tank with NO suspension.
I think that every time I see this vid. Working models sometimes tell the truth about the full size thing.
I just ordered one of these! I can’t wait to build it!
Most impressive for me is the proper scale-appearing drive speed. Well done.
Many thanks!
Even more impressive in such a small scale
That why this tank is design like that was😎👍
Can't wait to build mine. Great vid
Can we see more of this tank? It was really cool
Fantastic work also by the nice slow spead, very realistic.
Thank you. Was worried people would think it too slow - but this is pretty close to the 'walking speed' of the original.
How does this only have 45k views? This is amazing! Reminds me a bit of the game Toy Soldiers
Thank you
great Model, great Movie
A small .22 would be fun for the cannons! 💥
I think it might struggle to move guns that big around! The scsle bore on the guns is less than 1/16th of an inch...
"Indy, they have your father."
"Where's my father?"
"In the belly of that steal beast!"
Neat! I wonder if all the R/C and effects weights it more or less to scale as well. The big thing is electric motors have way more torque, so I don't know if we can extrapolate mobility from the model.
Still and all, outstanding job! Thats a labor of love, right there.
I'm not sure as I haven't weighed this one. However my 1/35 Challengers and Chieftain armoured recovery - see vids on this channel - are very close to scale weight and pretty mobile. What I have found is that models do predict real behaviour in some specific instances. For example, with amphibious models, the real challenge isn't getting into water but getting out of it. And this is very much the case at full scale as well. Also, model tanks get effectively stopped by scale obstacles of the same type and design as the full sized versions.
Amazing job with the guns how do you get them to shoot? I have a karl mortar I am making and I want the guns to shoot or have a shoot simulation
they dont shoot
@@mrfloaty7253 You might want to watch to the end of the video...
@@gonzomechanic7196 o cool BUT HOW DO YOU DO IT
This is so cool
Ok I just need to know how you got the little guns to fire
Bruh it is so cool!
this is amazing ,thank you
Thank you too!
This is BANGIN!
quite literally...
That is fucking adorable.
Shows off it's prodigious trench crossing capability
Yes, it does. It's probably the best model I have for this and shows that models can often predict the performance of the full-size thing. For example, with amphibious vehicles, forget getting out of the water without all-wheel drive - whatever the scale.
I like this!
So how to you build one and how do make the tracks and track assembly?
That is a bit hard to explain in a single comment... but I'll be doing more 'how to' vids in future
Where did you get the music from?
In the video description
man awsome tanck hstoricalay acurate to
Wtf
How much did it cost
Now they cost about 105usd.
Srry little late
What type of kits did you use?
Use the vape liquid that works great for the smoke might smell better!
That's a good idea. I also discovered glycerin works. Anything has got to be better than what I was using.
10/10
Nice
hey i'm a little confused on this did you add the smoke and gun effects yourself ?
Yes. The smoke machine is a small, sealed, hand made brass cylinder about an inch long, containing a heat source wrapped in cotton cloth. Cotton chars rather than burns. Glass fibre mat would possibly work better. The cloth is soaked in 'baby oil' through an openable tube. When the heat source gets hot, smoke forms which is blown out of the smoke cylinder by a very tiny air pump of the kind you can find on Asian trading sites, online. The smoke travels down the model's exhaust pipe - which is brass tube rather than the kit plastic piece - and exits at the back of the tank, as per the original vehicle.
Design and operation of the guns are both classified ;-) But it is a micro version of the system I built into my 1/35 Challenger tanks - which you can see in action on my channel.
I thought they used to have those bars on the back so that they didn't fall completely into the trench?
That's a sweet build....
As far as I know, the wooden bars were attached to the tracks themselves by a very brave soldier poking his head out of a hatch on top and then they were rolled own over the front by the tracks themselves, until the bar stuck in the mud. This then gave the tank traction to move out of whatever bind it had got itself into. A bit like sand channels.
@@gonzomechanic7196 Oh no you're talkin about the on ditching log, I'm talkin about there were some World War One British tanks that had a little wheelie bar on the back.
The carpenter and fire ants are at war again
The more model conversions i watch the more it makes me want to do it. I just don't know what to buy or what transmitter and receiver to get. Also what moter do I get
There are lots of videos that do 'how to' build diaries. There is a UA-camr called 'Allen' who does this well. As for transmitters, they are pretty much all 2.4Ghz now and FrSky do very good value sets. They usually come with a reciever or two. Also companies like Clark model will supply many useful parts and electronics. Most of my motor controllers come from him. RC 35tank used to do full conversion sets and maybe still do. Tank gearboxes by Tamiya, are very robust, and easily found online and good value. My suggestion is start with tanks as they are by far the simplest conversions. Trucks and amphibious stuff a bit more fiddly. Hope this helps, Gonzo
@@gonzomechanic7196 thank you very much! I see some people who take a cheap rc tank for 50 dollars maybe and take out all the electronics and put it in theres. I really don't wanna do that. Your saying that website has stuff on it you can buy to make a rc tank? Also I see some of the tank controllers are like 250 dollars, and the cheapest is 100. Is there any way I can do it without buying those?
@@bernardberben4852 You could make a simple tank go with this.

I use this kind of thing on smaller, lighter tanks like my M113 which you can see in one of my vids.
But, in any event, good idea to do lots of research on the web first to see what others have done. Like this gifted chap in Japan - ua-cam.com/channels/MmqdQUuyBleSoqC-qTqKgw.htmlvideos
And pay attention to voltage etc. These small cheap circuits fry easily. Hope this helps, Gonzo
👌
I want that :(
Where can i buy this tamiya tank
You can search up Tamiya ww1 tank and go to shopping.
No controller £60
Controller £160
But it doesn't come with all the cool stuff.
This is awesome! How would you create black or dark grey smoke for a Russian tank model?
That is a good question. Not sure. The things I tried: Diesel or glycerin tend to make white/grey smoke. I guess you'll just have to do some research on the net. But be careful, most smoke is not very good for you - and some is rather dangerous.
where did you buy it?
Well you got the maximum out of that kit anyway!
OMG
nice tank bro can you also make a ft renual tank
I am tempted - but at the moment am focusing on submarines and vehicles that launch rockets...
can it move thru the mud?
yes - but not if you want to use it more than once...
How can it be made to go faster? I want one now
It can't. It has a fixed gear ratio. Also, the real thing never went faster than 'walking speed'.
Where to buy?
What paint did you use?
Tamiya acrylics. It was a mixture: I was trying to match the paint remnants on the example in the Brussels Army Museum. It is believed to be the last in existance with its original paint.
What electronics was used?
Hi there, I used the Tamiya electronics from another kit. For most of my projects, however, I use the Flysky iA6b with a Flysky i6s transmitter. For controllers I use esc boards from Clarkmodel (CSCII or ESC4). For really small projects - like Humvee and M113 - I use cheap 27mhz recievers and tranmsitters from ebay, that don't need an esc.
Is it remote control or homemade
Both. The r/c system comes from another tank and the gearboxes found on the internet.
How hard was it to make this ?
It was reasonably challenging in that I had to find small enough gear boxes and fit them and make a tiny home-brew smoke machine and guns. But, unusually for my projects, it pretty much all worked first time - which was a surprise.

Rare Mk Iv Tank Footage (1917 colorised)
Is cute
That's a very slow Goliath
“Very good over fought terrain”
Yeah, unless your inside it
You can say that again. Zero suspension. Must have been a nightmare...
A land ship it be... Argh
Me grandma vs this, even
playback at 1/4 speed is more realistic.
Perhaps - but if you look at the youtube clip of the real thing in my description, it looks to me that my model's speed is not to far out. On the other hand, working out whether you are looking at the correct film speed on a clip from that period is tricky I gather - so you may be right.
Bugs : wtf is that
Fun Fact: The MK I tank could actually operate upside down because the tracks go all the way around.
But all the chunky stuff on the top.
But if you removed the chunky stuff then yea
Give me it
0:19 pretty sure everyone in the tank would have been killed if it fell like that. 0)
They were very uncomfortable indeed. No suspension and full of fumes.
If you ever want to sell it I’ll give you £100 or a bit more
Hi there, thanks for the offer! But I think you might be disappointed. Like most of my stuff this is very tricky to use - getting smoke fuel in etc. One day I'll make something simple to operate.
