School will suck your money, just get good from learning online and lots of practice. Build a Demo reel and forget about school. Coming from experience.

Yes. Yes you can. There are enough tutorials out there to learn the basics of AE (or other compositing applications), and then you can build up from there.
Note: once you have the basics down, don't rely on tutorials. Try to find ways to do things - not saying that tutorials are bad, but soley relying on them would never help you.
If you want to get into 3D integration into after effects, get Blender. Just to get started :)

Recommendation would be to quickly describe why the order of plugins is important each time you do it... I watched some of VC videos several years ago, but the level was so advanced for me at the time that I couldn't grasp what was going on yet. Now I follow it well enough, but...

I'm trying to make a superhero who has telekinesis but I don't want the powers to be super flashy and colorful like magic but I don't want them to be just plain hand movements either so I am using somewhat of a shock wave and heat wave distortion effect as the hero uses telekinesis by the way of molecular manipulation, moving the molecular energy in air and the objects and organisms around her.
I feel like that part is easy enough with some overlay effects and the distortion tool. The next problem is that said hero also suffers from an unstable molecular structure due to her powers. This renders her intangible at times unless she uses her powers to control and stabilize herself (until she eventually finds a conduit). So I'd need a ghost delay and dissolve effect like she's blurring and flickering in and out of her structure (this Ghost from Ant man and the Wasp).
