Nice design but your missing a fundamental thing about cross bows.... your bow is bent way too much and it only gives you a few inches of push to the bolt... instead simply un bow the bow and lengthen the stock a few more inches so when the bow is bent now the bolt will be pushed several more inches to get the maximum speed for the bolt.... yes most commercial cross bows have this flaw, but if your making it yourself do it right ! also the bow itself should have it's tips parallel with the bed where the bolt slides this reduces drag and increases the velocity by a big amount... it usually means making your own bow from a car spring but with your talent you can do that ! I have a crossbow hanging on the wall of my shop that has a PVC (double pipe) bow that is very strong. the bow string is almost straight by the way with very little arch to the bow itself but when it is cocked there is a big bow in the bow..... so the bolt has the whole length of the stock to accelerate not just 5"~6"
@@articwarrior9872 It is surprisingly HARD to get alot of power from a crossbow ! the first few I made were barely strong enough to fly 50' the reason is the bow, drag on the string and ability to cock it. at a bow strength of 100 to 150 lbs it comes to the point of having to cock the crossbow because you can't cock it by hand lever action that slides works the best i think. winches are slow and troublesome. I made a balastia out of an entire set of leaf springs from a truck.... had to cock it with a winch it shot a broom stick dead level 50 yards into a pine tree and went in 6" with the metal tip.... although it was more a conversation piece than anything else it did work and work well with only about 5 minutes between shots ! LOL in my experience most commercially available cross bows are not good enough for hunting, their just too weak.... I even took a full size 75lb bow and arrow and put a stock on it.... that worked very well but it was clumbersome... so in the effort of making the bow smaller you take away the bolts speed.... but the bow has to be smaller to be viable. it's a hard balance to achieve....people do not realise how powerful a bow and arrow are.... My 55lb pull Howard Hill long bow will shoot an arrow as fast as a 30.06 rifle bullet.... dead level trajectory and go completely through a bail of hay... the penetration of the arrow is the key... My Dads 65lb Howard Hill bow went completely through the deer he shot once through the shoulder and then through the hips..... the arrow went completely through the deer ,through bone and all... a good hunting bow is hard to beat, silent and deadly....
@@bobkelly2447 I don't have much experience with bows except for the 20lb compound bow and 50lb recurve bow that use use for practically just building strength, so I hardly understand most of what you said, but I would like to learn more ngl (especially if it helps me turn the shotgun stock I have into a crossbow that is very effective)
@@articwarrior9872 Well that shotgun stock will be fairly short for a crossbow.... you'll have to lengthen it one way or another.... it might be easier to just make another stock from scratch.... a 2"x6" 28~30" long is usually a good thing to make a stock out of, or as long as 36" depending on the bow you plan to use. a bow that is barely strung and only has a slight bow to it say the string is only 2" from the bow center will throw a arrow/bolt much faster than one that has 6" between the string and center of the bow..... the reason is because it pushes the arrow/bolt much longer and the arrow/bolt receives a much faster speed as a result... it's all about speed.... speeds of 250fps is not very fast the trajectory will be arched to the target 50' away...but a speed of 1200fps will have a flat trajectory to the target at 50' so speed is the key .... a compound bow is alot different than a traditional bow, it puts the power into the very last of the push of the arrow/bolt... it's harder to cock as at the first of the pull it is very hard but gets easier as it goes further back that is what you really want for an arrow/bolt to achieve the fastest speeds. the next important thing is string drag on the stock itself. mounting the draw string on top of the bow goes a long way in reducing drag or making the bow that has a angle up to both of it's limbs... this is hard to do from a construction standpoint.but the end results means faster arrow.bolt speeds..... Also arrow weight is important.... shoot a solid steel rod and then a hollow fiberglass arrow and you will see what I mean... but what is not apparent is the penetration power of the two.... that heavy steel rod will penetrate much further because of the weight involved. once mass is in motion it tends to stay in motion. using the lightest arrows you can find will give you the fastest speeds but the least penetrating power. I tend to use a light arrow shaft with a heavy steel tip and find that to be the best all around for target shooting....
Damn, man! We both think alike) I did the same crossbow two years ago, but yours looks much pretty. Try somewhen to make bolts from composite reinforcement, they are indestructible.
I didn’t understand - why do you need to loosen of the hardened metal, then forge it, and then harden it again? These actions greatly complicated the technology.

The stock almost looks like it from Springfield or Nagant rifle. Nice skills. You can be a gunsmith.

Does having the pulley system usually add power to a crossbow?

I would prefer to extend the stock ngl. It just looks to short to me, and more so kids size crossbow.

Metals are hardened in many different ways, not necessarily according to one standard, depending on the purpose and steel material.
