HOW TO MOVE A CABIN!! (Off Grid Alaska)

  • The day has finally come! We took the plunge this week and tackled the cabin move. We wanted to get this done before the ground started to thaw and become mucky. The project went well and we spent our first night near the edge of the lake. The cabin will now remain here until after the snow melts and the ground dries up. Then we will position it better, as we want it to be, and set it on it's permanent foundation.
Next week we will be working on the shop roof. We are looking forward to getting a nice indoor workspace set up. It rains a lot here in the summer and we need a place to keep things dry!
Oh, I almost forgot. I have a surprise for everyone next week! I think you will enjoy it.
Have a blessed week my friends. Much love to you from Alaska

I forgot to mention in my previous comment that a couple we became good friends with while living in Wyoming had a similar squirrel 🐿️ encounter. She found it living outside their home, thought it was cute & fed it nuts to help it survive the winter. Meanwhile, during that long, lovely winter, said squirrel set up camp in their beautiful RV, happily making nests & chewing wires it didn't like. 😳🫣 I don't know what became of 'said' squirrel but I guess the lesson that can be taken from both encounters is .... never trust a squirrel! My aunt used to fondly refer to them as 'tree rats'! 😀 Oh, also, awesome job on getting the cabin moved! Woo hoo! You go! 👍😉

First press like, then watch the post, enjoying every moment, then write and say hello to the two (three) most humbling people on internet. Stella reminds me so much of my late dog, exactly same behavour, full of life. It’s real good feeling to watch you two. Thankyou, by the way the translation of the word ”hygge” was correct, it’s used in Denmark and I think Norway as well.

I too enjoy your youtube channel and I'm amazed at all the construction you get accomplished in the middle of the winter. And secondly, your grandson is a handsome little helpful guy. I absolutely enjoy watching you instruct him on how to build things. This is the type of relationship a boy should have with their grandfather; nothing complicated, just simple instruction on how to take care of himself and his future family. I did not have a relationship with either of my grandfathers, but I envision my relationship with them, being a lot like the one you have with your grandson.
Thank you for the great commercial free and non-preachy content. You folks make me want to grab my backpack, move somewhere far away from all the crazy people and enjoy a simple and scaled-down lifestyle.

Your adventures together are entertaining & amusing, especially when you don't edit the goof ups & chuckles. We love it when you laugh at each other rather than get upset. We've had some fun & adventures but none in Alaska. This May, we'll have 50 years together, 5 years dating (the old fashioned way) & 45 married. We sold our home & most of our belongings over 15 years ago & bought an RV & hit the road. What adventures we had. We lived in Florida & completely flipped a house... together, like you two do. We sold that & moved to Wyoming & bought a place out there. It was spectacular but after a few years found it necessary to move back home to PA to take care of my mother. Needless to say, we had to build a place back home in PA. Watching you two work together & take on challenges brings back both good & challenging memories. Gayle is like an 'Ever- ready Bunny'..does he ever wind down!? 😀 Tonya, you & Stella are the rocks that keep him anchored! We can't wait until you get the cabin set into its permanent resting place & see what else you have in store for the property. Keep up the humor & the good work & as always....hug Stella! 🤗

Alaska has great memories for me and I can relate to all that you guys build and experience. I have been watching you guys for I guess a year and have never commented. Not sure if can handle the cold now that I'm in my sixties, but I plan on flying up in a couple of years. At Adak we would fly rod fish during spawning season, I think it was late july early August, quick season to fish. Thanks for the memories.

Joe, you were here at such a cool time. Many things have changed and yet the wilderness is largely unchanged. I remember how it was in those days when the JC Penny parking lot was unpaved and 5th Avenue in North Pole was a dirt trail. Do you remember Uncle’s Pizza Parlor? (Maybe it wasn’t around until the 70s). We also enjoy thinking about those childhood memories. When you come back up I hope you will stop in for a cup of coffee and a chat. Thank you for watching and for taking time to comment. Take care friend.

@@ThisIsMyAlaska I do remember the fishing and camping season from about 1960 to 1967. We never had problems with bears or moose... I also remember the earthquake in anchorage 61 (I think) and the ocean water reaching the second and third story of many buildings. We went to anchorage the next summer for a camping visit. Two of my brothers were born in Fairbanks. There were seven of us plus my parents. We did a lot of outside activities in the warmer months. Back in those days there were shacks that they would smoke fish and meat. They would sell it and it was the original jerky, but better. We also went to Lake Louise before it was a resort, just timber houses with barely wood floors. It is in Canada, and I think it is a fancy resort now. I have so many memories, I think that is why we sold our big house recently and now live in a very small cabin that we built (I made my extra money building things for people). It is kinda like Alaska just not as much snow, and I have kept my friendly attitude from that wonderful state. Oh I also remember the ice breaking up in the rivers and water ways, what a noise.... Ps I would like to visit when we go up, it would be great to see what I remember and visit the changes...

I thought to myself several weeks back ... “Is Gale making a giant sled out of his house? Nah, couldn’t be... that’s ridiculous! Why would he add runners to his cabin?”..... me on Friday morning while enjoying my coffee “holy smokes! Gale and Tanya made their house into a giant sled so they could move it!!! genius! Pure genius!”
It all makes so much sense now. And the timing was perfect. No wonder you needed all that snow.
I Thoroughly enjoy every second of every minute of every video. Cannot wait to see how things unravel and I’ll never doubt a far fetched notion of what you “might” be doing.
All the best from eastern Long Island, NY.
PS. I love how you guys get along... always laughing and enjoying each other. What a wonderful thing! Say hi to Stella

I never imagined that what happens in my country is that to buy a lot equal to your cabin, you have to work half of your life to save and thus have as buy it but if you own that land you can place it wherever you want greetings and it looks beautiful annelo see the summer to be able to locate myself well my family loves you gale tanya

Forgive my silliness, but I just couldn’t help it. When I heard you say that you where moving that small cabin that close to the lake, my first thought was, “There making a Houseboat”. It took me several minutes through this video to realize what a crazy idea I had. But I know y’all could do it.👍

I came across your channel through your construction videos as I am a project manager for a construction company. I love watching your workmanship. It’s hard to find a quality like yours these days. You show me what’s possible in Alaska. Your videos are calming. The dynamic between you two is just so bucket list. You have the whole package. Your channel will take you to the stars. Keep up the amazing inspiring work and thank you.

Finally a dose of reality! “Where’s the pencil?” Love it! Granted it wasn’t 10 minutes of, “I just had it a second ago” and a litany of cursing but it gave a sense that the struggle is real. 😉
I just about fell out of my chair when the rails were within a 1/16th!! But then again, it shouldn’t surprise me. Your work is impeccable! It did remind me of a joke - you’ve probably heard it…
What’s the difference between a carpenter and a cabinet maker? 1/32 of an inch. 🤣 However, a 1/16” over a 20’ span is cabinet grade precision in my book! Well done - loved this week’s video! Have a great week!
