  • Body integrity identity disorder (or BIID) which is characterized by a desire to be amputated or paralyzed due to a mismatch between one’s ideal body image and the actual physical appearance. As a result victims of BIID believe a part of their body does not belong to them.
It is also known as Body integrity dysphoria, amputee identity disorder, voluntary amputation, transabled, Apotemnophilia, and xenomelia.

I don't think it's properly characterized as "a desire to be disabled." It's rather a desire to rid oneself of something that feels alien. If the desire was "to be disabled," the person wouldn't be picky. You could lop off a random limb or damage their spine and they'd be happy. But the person wants to get rid of, say, their left leg from the knee down. If they lost the right leg in an accident, they'd be disabled, but they'd still want to get rid of the alien-feeling left lower leg.

Indeed. It is not about a desire to be disabled for disability's sake, but about wanting to correct (a) specific wrong(s).

I only found out about this when I were in my 20s googling for answer to the annoying feel which leads me to temporarily numb my lower limbs whenever it triggers. I do not wish to be labelled transabled, I simply wish to get rid of this permanently and live a normal life rather than thinking about severing my own limbs. My best option was to meditate, for those out there who suffering the same, try meditating, it helped me very much, hope it works for you too.

i have this, most of it is correct, but there are a few issues. firstly, we don't use transabled, most other biid sufferers hate that term. just saying biid is fine, we don't mind. it's also not about being disabled, it's about removing the limb that feels foreign. it doesn't sound like a big difference, but it is. also, it isn't caused by brain _damage_ per se, it's just a difference in structure in the part of our brain that maps our bodies. it's from birth, and just as much "brain damage" as autism or adhd is. (that is to say, not brain damage at all.)
otherwise, great vid. hope it can spread awareness about biid, it's a terrible condition

Always makes me happy to see you pop up in my feed 😁. Neurology is a complicated and abstract subject (less than psychiatry but still) and understanding it can be quite hard at times like these where dysphoria is both used by people that actually suffer from that condition and other that want to use it for an ideology (even if they're the minority), confusing people even more about a medical condition. Starting by the brain is a beautiful and easy to understand way to do it. Keep up the good work this channel will blow up I'm sure of that🔥

Sometimes one of my legs or an arm feels like it's not mine.
I DO NOT WANT A DAMNED AMPUTATION!
The feeling normally doesn't last too long, but I can't sleep when a limb feels like this.
If I'm in bed, trying to sleep, I HAVE to get up, make myself a cup of coffee and take a pain tablet even though I am not in pain as such.
It's just that the limb feels wierd.
I suffer from major back pain, and walk with a cane.
I can't stand for too long.
Sometimes a nerve pinches, randomly effecting a leg temporarily, making loose support in that leg.
Most of the time I catch myself or hold onto a wall for support.
I do not know if my back problems are related to my temporary borrowed leg syndrome.
Since my back pain seems confined to my lower back, I can't see how that might affect my arms occasionally.
Because of this recurring problem, my sleep patterns are irregular.
Luckily I am unemployed or my work would suffer!
I don't know if this is a psychological or physical malady.
I take as few painkillers as possible, fearing addiction, so don't think I'm a pill popping drug fiend, in fact I've learned to live with the near constant low intensity back pains.
Maybe I have BIID on a budget?
(Yes, my sense if humour is still intact, as laughing is better than crying.)

What I still fail to understand or failed to find an answer is what is the difference from this and gender dysphoria. Both stem from the same place. The brain. And yet for gender dysphoria, we prescribe the amputation of healthy organs and the masking of the "gender".

Hi there ! Do you'll think that Autogynephilia is also a BII Disorder ? It does have some sexual aspects, but it definitely has some similarities to BIID. There are some people who receive relief from transitioning in the short term, many others detransition, because they feel uncomfortable in their new bodies and in presenting as the opposite gender. We do not have any studies on long term outcomes for the same. What do you'll think ?

    • @GalaxyGal-
      @GalaxyGal- 3 роки тому +1

It might be LIKE a BII disorder, but that's probably only for clinical disordered anatomical autogynephilia. More research certainly needs to be conducted on autogynephilia gender dysphoria.
It can be analogous in my opinion. Some people with BIID are happier after having becoming disabled, but I don't think any clinical research has been done yet to understand how it works.

There are long term studies in the form of trans people who have had surgery for over 100 years now. detransition makes up less than 0.4% of people who medically transision to any extent and is usually due to external transphobia.

I’m originally from India. Both of my parents are from New Delhi India. This disorder breaks my heart in so many ways that I cannot even begin to explain.
India has been voted as the most corrupted country in Asia. There are criminals in India who kidnap poor children from the streets, poor families, and orphanages and use them for begging.
Sometimes they amputate one of their limbs or blind them so that they can earn more money as disabled or blind beggars. The maimed children are dispersed into different areas during the day and are taken back to the criminals during the evening time. All of the money goes to the gang leaders. The worst part about all this is that the government is not doing anything about the criminals because some of the money used is to bribe the police.
This is still happening as we speak and the government of India is not doing anything about it. The same thing happens in China 🇨🇳 as well.
