For me when I lived in Chicago, I wore fleeced lined leggings, a half-slip a skirt or dress that covered my calf's, knee-high socks, laced up winter boots that are knee length, knee length cloth coat that had a detachable hood (cloth holds in heat better), a crocheted hood that I made myself that covered my neck so I did not need a scarf ( and does not mess up my hair-do), added a cloth jacket/ sweater under, and wore t-shirts under my tops.
For gloves I learned mittens are the best, and gloves with fingers are added under the mittens in case I needed to take my hand out of my mitten so my hands will not get cold. And I also carried a muff to stick my hands in for even extra added warmth. I learned the muff needs a handle/ neck holder, this way the muff is not in the way when you need to use your hands. I got the faux fur muff from amazon and made sure it was machine washable. Home girl does not have time to go to the dry cleaners, LOL
When I moved to Texas I could not find a cloth knee length coat anywhere, they have puffy waist length wind breakers that they call coats, and I was freezing so bad. Thankfully I did buy a man's cloth work jacket that was lined and hip length I was cold even with layers but not as cold when I was wearing the puffy wind backer.
For people that sweat more than the average person, such as myself, I wear Thompson Tees under my dresses, so I never get my dresses sweaty, and I just wash the Tees instead of the dresses.

HOORAY, for the cotton petticoat, been looking for so this much needed Item for years, and the closest I got was a cloth half-slip which did not keep me warm.
OMG, I love that coat of yours! So gorgeous! As for tips, if it's freezing, you can use two pairs of gloves, some thin modern ones, the ones that let you use phones and on top of them some cuter, warmer, vintage gloves. Those thin modern ones are not great for warmth on their own, but they add a bit of warmth when layered, and also when you need to check your phone you still have something on your hands, so it's not such a big temperature shock. Also if you're wearing boots, then add warm socks, with boots they aren't visible, so you can use any socks on top of tights. Also, thick woollen tights, especially those ribbed ones, they were popular in the 40s, so they don't look out of place. :) Also fur hats, my grandmothers always had at least one, and there's plenty of old fur on the market, so we don't need to buy new ones. And I feel fur hats were a bit less influenced by fashion, they weren't changing as much as normal hats, so you could probably find a hat even from the late 20th century and it would still look good with a vintage look. :)

I buy fleece lined or very thick flesh coloured tights, then I wear my very light seamed stockings over the top. Once you've got your top layer on it just looks like your skin underneath. I love the idea of ice skater tights. They often wear flesh coloured tights, that would work really well

Shein has the absolute best tights for plus size. I don't like supporting fast fashion but they really do have true plus size tights that are good thick quality

Love this! I really like the idea of wearing a skirt over a dress for extra warmth from the layers, it's like a double hack because it also gives that extra versatility to pieces in my wardrobe :) will definitely be trying it!
When I lived in Austria I used base layers of both silk and wool pointelle knit which I preferred because it shifted less under my tights. I recently found a store on Etsy (Thunda Thighs) which make thigh high acrylic stockings that I live in. If I'm laying a skirt with a dress I use the skirt as a petticoat so my dress doesn't bunch. A neckerchief with a cardigan has become my signature look. I love the coat in your thumbnail! Such a pretty color on you.
I was looking at the Thunda Thighs, do they stay up well on their own or do you wear them with garters?
@@TheGlambassador for me they stay up fine BUT I am short so I have to roll them over at the top and I don't do a lot of walking during the day with them. I'm mostly wearing them while sitting at my desk. I work from home and my office area gets cold. If I wear them outside I normally fold them down a little more so they're midway between knee and thigh. I don't have any issues with them rolling like some of the reviews but I wear them over tights. Oh and I have a 28" inseam.

Hello, I’m glad you found the video helpful. Yes, I dress in vintage style everyday. I’ll generally wear a house dress or a comfy shirtdress during the day or a skirt and blouse or sweater. I keep it pretty casual.
When I do chores around the house I’ll typically wear an apron to keep my clothes clean and tidy.

I’m not sure exactly where this one came from, I have a few made from friends and I’ve purchased some from Etsy.
I would check out Snag Tights, they are super comfortable and I love their wool tights.
Silk is wonderfully insulating. I will have to check out the Lands End camis. I wear silk glove liners under my gloves or mittens. I think wearing skirts is actually more practical as like you say, there's a lot of layering, more than just wearing trousers. Thank you for such useful tips.

I live in scoop neck undershirts from 32 Degrees under my sweaters and tops. Super comfy, and affordable. I buy mine at Costco.

I am always upset when the cold season comes, it lasts a long time here, 7-9 months, and I am upset that I cannot demonstrate my looks, put on a dress and brooches, my whole look is hidden under a down jacket. Your tips are very inspiring! I confirm that silk is excellent at keeping warm. I live in Moscow, it's really cold here, but I can go outside in just a silk dress and coat, without putting on anything extra, neither a cardigan nor a sweater, and I won't freeze.

@@TheGlambassador Thank you, dear Christine 🙏😊 Yes, of course we have 🙏 in winter and late autumn it is mostly cloudy here and from May to October it is warm, summer can be really hot for us 30-35 degrees, but we have to wear some light and warm coats since September to May. So I have a chance to wear my light vintage dresses from May to September only 😩😁
Where are some good places to get plus sized clothes made of natural fibers? It's a struggle to find places especially for those who want and or need to be on some sort of a budget.
I recently created this list for size inclusive vintage reproduction/retro clothing lines. They aren't specific to natural fibers, but a lot of them do use them. This would be a good start for you.

Great tips! Funnily enough, I've found through wearing vintage that I am usually better suited to face the temperatures throughout the year. As in, I feel less hot in the summer, and much warmer in the winter than I used to in modern clothes. It's my first full winter in Germany, and so far so good!
That's an interesting assessment, I 100% agree. I'm sure it has a lot to do with wearing more natural fibers that either let your body/skin breathe and wearing fabrics that insulate our bodies properly.

@@TheGlambassador I'm in the north, in the border with Denmark (the city is called Flensburg)! Sometimes I'm shocked at how much I learned from having to speak German at work and in life situations (like renting an apartment, getting health insurance, going to the doctor...) and then I'll just not know how to say the simplest thing and feel dumb again lol!

Another great video!! I wonder if you have tips for shoes or boots? My problem is that even though I can dress up warm and comfy, I wasn't able to find winter shoes that fit vintage style dresses. Any suggestions for brands or sites?
I wear boots and shoes from Clarks and Cobb Hill most of the wintertime. Closed toe oxfords or ankle boot are very vintage-style and I wear them with dresses a lot. I'm always on the hunt for lace up boots that will fit my wide calves.
I can highly recommend Memery fur/fleece lined ankle boots (they have two 1940s styles) - I have the popper closure ones and they keep my feet toasty - and I get cold very easily. They're based in Sweden I think but I live in the UK and service was quick and shipping wasn't expensive at all.

Where do you get your beautiful coats? I'm a big fan of wool, I haven't delved into silk much but I'm wanting to.
I have a few from Collectif (the one featured in the video and on the cover are both from there), and I have some from Hell Bunny as well as a few vintage coats (I have a video showing those).
Do you wear short sleeve dresses in winter? I find it hard to find long sleeve vintage dresses. I can only find them on Aliexpress. I live in Oregon where winters are in the 40's degrees. and I keep my apt cool cause my rabbit.
Sorry for the delay, I could have sworn that I responded. Yes, I wear short sleeves in the winter. Usually if I'm at home I'll still wear short sleeves and just have a cardigan nearby if I get chilly. But even if I'm going out I'll wear a short sleeved dress with a cardigan over it. And if it's extra cold, I wear a long sleeved silk undershirt under the dress and the the cardigan over that. I helps to extend my wardrobe a bit.
I do the double layers with the tights it's the best. Have you tried SNAG tights yet?
I have!!! I love them so much. I have the wool tights and the regular thick ones. So comfy!
