All my music folders are created on the hard drive itself. All Genre, plus a top chart folder by year. I then can create playlist by those folders using serato, virtual dj and engine dj. I then make a folder titled backup, there I drop a copy of the above software database and copy it there. That way if serato get corrupt. My music is safe and restoring the database places all those years of organizing is back!!!
Only caveats would be how large your collection is and how accurate the metadata (ie Tags) are. In my experience Lexicon was helpful for initial organization, duplicate removal and tag updatea. Once you get past that most dj softwares are extremely efficient when it comes to library management
Fantastic advice Phil! If you use Virtual DJ, make sure you remove any database files from your music folder. Even fresh installs will look for that database files. Great feature for backup gear, hard to start fresh if you don't know about it though.
What’s the long version? I‘m rather well organized but still have everything in ITunes. Also have loads of duplicates which I need to get rid of without hurting existing playlists.
If you do all the organizing in the Dj software, if one day you want to use another Dj software you have a problem. Isn´t it better to do all the organizing in iTunes ( now called music) and then get this music synchronizing iTunes to o any Dj software ?. Would like to hear your opinion.
Serato virtual DJ and denon prime 4 all have the same Playlist all because the software see folders on my hard drive. I just have to backup the software database
@@RappDaddy502 folders in the hardrive i am afraid is a terribe solution. Beacuse you can not put one song in 5 diferent folders.. you would have to have 5 mp3.. Playlist allow to have the same song in several playlist..
@Amatteus why would you need the same song in multi Playlist? I freestyle without a Playlist. If am skating. I go to the skate folder. Should feel a vibe to throw a jazz hit in I just go to the jazz folder. I have the same title song by different artist, like: mary j and Beyonce did a rendition of maze song before I let you go. Michael Jackson and Jackie Wilson share the same so g title, so, Jackie is classic while MJ is pop folder. No confusion. Same song. Some times jazz artist do the same thing. My way just isn't best for everyone. So far I wouldn't change my system...
Why does Djay Pro want to force you to use iTunes? Trying to use an external is painful. I really wish they’d improve that. It should be priority one for the next version.
Simplicity and consistency is what pros want, but as a hobbyist, if chopping and changing is more your thing, then yeah, maybe this isn't the route for you.
There are apps that will allow you to migrate your collection as well as beat grids, cues, loops, etc, to another DJ program should you decide to move. In fact, Phil did a video on just that.
Does this apply when using djay Pro AI? I generally use Apple Music (iTunes) playlists to organize, and the software finds my library by default, and it’s synced across devices. Still better to organize in the DJ software?
Hi Phil, I’ve followed your stuff for years and as well as buying courses and even winning competitions you even called me a long time follower 10 years ago 😮. Previously you always recommended to organise the libary in iTunes (as was), I’d been wondering if now different?
If you are happy, stick with iTunes/Music. For new DJs, we wouldn't recommend that nowadays, for loads of reasons. Don't sweat it, do what works for you.

Simple ..yet effective
Indeed!

Is it possible to arrange my playlist on serato dj lite?
Was advice since 2004 by a scratch live tech to put all my music in an external drive 😊
No regrets so far
Glad it works for you!

When your organization is placed on the hard drive itself. All you need to protect us your dj software database file. Simple, and secure.

It serve my needs. I actually never create Playlist.

We agree.
An’d i’m forever bound to that dj software …
Not such a bad thing. For mine, been wishing it had better STEMS since it got surpassed, but divorcing from DJ software is miserable anyway.

no, not if that workflow works for you.

Imports 64,000 files at once. 😮.
Lol what if you have itunes tracks on a PC? How tf are you doing step 1?
