As a guitar player, I don't hear this bass as overlapping a guitar. It has a different sound, and an actually very enjoyable one. I think you did a great job playing its strengths.
Well that just shows that your ear could use some training, because at 440, it's in the exact same frequency as your guitar. It has a different sound? Do you mean tone? Because all guitars have different tones from each other, or there would just be one guitar for everything.
It's a very short scale piccolo bass which is a really great idea and I'm surprised it's not a more popular concept. Thank you so much for this video! Very short scale basses have been around for a while but there aren't many videos of really good bassists playing them.
Of course it is, you can hear it all over today's top 40 music! Actually if you listen too much, your cholesterol and blood pressure shoot through the roof.
I saw this video a number of times but didn't do anything to listen to it. I finally broke down and listened to it. Wow, I'm totally impressed with the sound and playability of those little guys. So glad I stopped and gave it a listen. Now I want one. I have been playing guitar and bass since my teens and now I'll be 70 in June. I learned something new with seeing this fine instrument demonstrated. This guy can play that little bass very well. Thanks for sharing how wonderful this little instrument is.
Received my Cali4 today and you are right, the are a great deal of fun and indeed very well made. Somehow I expected it to be much lighter. It is a little piece of art created by the craftsman and/or woman of Mayones. Love mine 👍🏻✌🏻
Okay - this just blew my mind. As a guitar player of 10 years, bass has always been a secondary instrument to me. However, I could see myself making so much music with this. It's the perfect travel instrument somewhere between the guitar and bass, and absolutely gorgeous to boot. Jealous!!!
Actually I think they're going to sell a lot of these. The built in headphone amp is brilliant. I could be wrong ( I usually am ) but I think the demand for these will will outpace the availability of "scrap" timbers.
I think it’s sick idea for an instrument , I just wish it was a more affordable. $1500 (dollar conversion and minimal shipping) is a lot for something that would not be my main instrument. Hoping this idea catches on and other companies start making more affordable ones.
In my local store there are ukulele basses, i think even amplifiable. They have rubber strings but sound very cool. Expecially the fretless one i tried. I think they are between 100 and 200 euros.
@Lee McDonald There are much cheaper uke basses around and even those are useful, if not exactly fun to work with. However, the Kala is a quality instrument (spotty QC notwithstanding) with plenty of professionals around that are using it well. If you don't know what to do with one, that's on you, but it's a good rule of thumb not to project your failures onto others.
Very cool, I would never think these could be of any use in a normal setting, but the octave pedal solution is very neat. They look and sound magnificent. 1300E is a lot, but you can instantly see the design and build quality is top end

Gregor and crew, keep up the good work! I love the snarky humor in this video. It’s nice to see the lighter side of things. Opening joke almost make me shoot milk out my nose.
Many bass players I know find something like the Bass 6 to be difficult to play. This mini-bass gives bass players a melody instrument that has a familiar feel.
Marleaux has a very similar concept (as far as I can tell) callef the Marleaux Soprano. It looks like a down version of their Consat bass Modell, with only one Humbucker and higher Tuning.
I’m a jaded guitarist of 10 years and recently bought a Harley Benton bass (it’s amazing) been playing it for like 2 weeks solid and picked up my guitar to see if I could still play and it felt like a toy! I no longer give a shit about guitars...bass all the way
I like how smooth and rounded the body is. It’s probably very comfortable to play. I have a short scale acoustic bass so I have a hard time finding anything strange anymore.
You forgot, with thicker strings that are placed further apart. I don't know... you have to add so many caveats to the "guitar" moniker that I just don't think it works anymore. Its like saying a motor cycle is just a bicycle that you can't peddle, has an engine, requires fuel, etc..
Everyone should realize that the same about of labor and time goes into these as it does standard scale instruments. When you state "It's only half of a bass, it should be half price" is thinking about it all wrong. We started in 2015 making these (winginstruments.com) and try our best to make it affordable (~718 EUR). This is the lowest we can do to make a small profit. Also, the point of these is to keep the same feel of the lower half of the bass... standard strings, standard spacing, standard pickups. We also offer to build an EHX Nano POG right into the instrument, and with the flick of a switch you're back down to standard range. Granted, it's not the same as using a standard scale bass but it's a believable tone. Most of our customers travel or practice where they can't have access to their main instrument, while others have created a different voice with them.
I want one! Why not , I have plenty of 4 strings & 5 strings... a little pricey, but sounds great. Great to double it with a regular 4 string. I don't think I'd use it without an octave pedal.
Just ordered mine. Got to pick out the wood for my Mini Bass. My Mini 4 will be Walnut Body, Walnut Burl top, 9 ply mahogany-Maple neck, ebony fretboard, natural finish, Aguilar DCB pick up.
I think these are very cool. I'd buy one. I could see it being useful in low volume settings in combination with a percussionist as a duo, or in a trio with a lead instrument; for entertaining small (lol) crowds. Of course, it's just fun too - and isn't that what music is all about?
This is great! Have you all seen the great stuff Wing Instruments has been making? They make a lot of short scale basses, 4-7 strings, fretted/fretless, and more options. Haha sorry for sounding like a commercial. I really love the fact that Mayones is making sure they use what they’ve already taken from the earth. Plus, they appear to have the typical incredible quality for which the company is known.
The acoustic ones with rubber strings sounds much lower than the electrical, metal string, ones. The flexiblity of the rubber allows for much lower sonds than metal strings, so they are usable as a bass in some cases.
Fits in a suitcase, so I'm happy. My only complaint is that the white strips in the center made me double-take every time the camera hit them; it looks like a string is going under the pickup.
i could never understand why they dont have more mini basses available. I think every bass player would love a mini bass to carry around with ease. I think every manufacturer should make a half bass and they should be available at a moderate price. Either bass or octave higher. 12 fret, light and easy for a noodle.

Are there any good quality ones that won’t take a year to manufacture?
There are not many bassists wearing bass picks because it doesn't make sense. In that case better to use a guitar with many more harmonics
