In the fall of 1973, for about $5000 I purchased a new 914 1.7. I wanted a 2.0 model but the price boost of several thousand dollars more was just too much at the time. Luckily, the 914 1.7 is still in my garage and it remains in excellent condition.

Excellent video Dan. You really nailed describing how 914 came into existence. The guy driving the 914 looked really sharp

I have had three of these cars. Each one was great, but my first was special. I had a 1970. 1.7 in Dark Red paint that I put fiberglass GT flares on and had it lowered and repainted. Had 215's front and 225's rear and that car was like a slot car in the canyons of Southern California. Later in 1980 I picked up a 1975, 1.8 that was very nice and drove great, but wasn't up to my 1970, LOL. Fast forward to 2005 and an article in the paper about the 914 community. Got interested again and picked up a 1976, 2.0 that need a lot of work. Due to advancing age and a bad back, this car hurt me physically trying to do the work at home. Ended up getting it running well, shifting better than stock, and electrically sound. Sold it to a young fellow to finish and enjoy. Wish now I had them all back.

Nice summary of the history of this car. I just got a nice 1974 1.8L car. It's not fast, but it's comfortable, smooth, handles great, and seems to be very well built. Compared to MGs and Triumphs of the time, this was a very sophisticated car, even with the relatively simple air-cooled engine. It does make me appreciate how horrible the ride is on most modern performance cars with their low-profile tires and overly stiff suspensions to help control their weight.

I owned a 914 1.7 from 1970 to 1978. Karmann produced all the unibodies. VW 4 cylinder version was finished in Wolfsberg. The 914-6 was finished in a Porsche factory. Loved the car.....

I always thought the 914 was a great looking car, even though the performance was not there.

Nice job. Will always have a “soft spot” for the 914, it was my 1st car. Bought a ‘75 1.8L in SoCal and put lots of freeway miles on it! It even had aftermarket a/c, though when the coolant charge ran out it was top off and windows down!

Great explanation of the crazy deal Porsche and VW cooked up over a lunch meeting creating such a cool little car.

While still a senior in HS. I noticed a car tucked in some back driveway/Woodline while riding the bus to school. I rode my bike down the road to see what it was. Yes it was, a Porsche 914. Just sitting there. I called it my "River Road treasure find". I called a number found on it several times, but never got a reply. I wanted that car so much. Here I am at age 54, and still no Porsche, yet. The ugly 914 holds a place in my heart. I see a handful here in Maine. At some point, I will own a Boxster. What a cool video, thank you.

They didn’t get the fuel injection right until ‘75 either, a lot of these cars caught fire, usually a “cough” at a stop light. This drove many away from the car. I love my 76 spare leftovers porsche
