What is your game of the year for 2023?

I haven't playing many of these games, but I did play Kena and I could even make it through the first couple bosses... it was very difficult for me. I completely agree that Baldur's Gate deserves it's own catergory for greatness. Probably the GOTY for the next 5 years.

Kena is definitely tough but rewarding when you do make it through. Requires a lot of focus and deliberate action though for sure.

I think for me 2018 was one of the strongest years we've ever had in gaming. Marvel's Spider-man. Assassin's Creed Odyssey. Red Dead Redemption 2. And as if THEY weren't enough of an appetite, God Of War was the garnish

Yeah 2018 was a stacked year for sure. It's interesting that it feels like historically there's always 1 huge year with tons of huge games and then 4 or 5 mostly forgettable ones with only a couple significant releases. You'd think devs would try to stagger things out more

Ngl this is nothing against you but the fact that some of the highest reviewed games and some of the most played are games we could have played in the 90s - it really does put in perspective how bad and where the gaming industry is as a whole. And I’m a huge DnD fan but the fact people are just now trying BG3 l literally can’t even begin to comprehend why, sure the choice and freedom is great as any d n d or larian game would be..: but when so called gamers are excited by 8/16 bit platformers / dice rolling combat… please game devs get your head out of your asses and take some pride in your delivery and development

An interesting take but you do make some good points. It is weird to me that the same teams who remake great games so well can't seem to make equally good new games in the same series. My understanding is the more recent star oceans haven't been as well received. And you can watch my last video to hear the same about final fantasy. I think gamers clearly send the message that the older approaches still work and are still desired yet it's hard to get those these days.
Personally I don't need graphics to make or break a game. I'm also not a huge "retro" fan (though it may seem that way with octopath and star ocean so high up). But it was the gameplay and stories in those that gripped me and that's the magic of the medium. You can be gripped and enthralled by games that maybe don't look all that great.
The BG3 take I think though needs some pushback. They turned DnD into a video game. So yes I think the dice rolls part adds to the experience. You're playing out a massive, expansive, wonderfully crafted DnD campaign. Again people are buying it for the narrative and not showing the dice rolls wouldn't mean they aren't there since you have %chances to hit, pass checks, etc. I dont see that as old or outdated design either.
What have been some games you've put at the top of your lists the last few years? Thanks for the comment and checking out the video!

Dang Star Wars Jedi Survivor robbed itself of a top 5 spot. Sad! I still have no idea what the Yakusa games are about they look silly and dumb but everyone says they are great. And of course, it wouldn't be a capt sarge GOTY list without some Japanese turn based combat RPG near the top!
Anyway... off to go play Baulders Gate 3 finally

Yakuza is GTA but in Japan, but the main narrative is 100% serious with no satire and all the side content is absolutely ridiculous.
