I recall a radio conversation a few years ago with Don Black who wrote the lyrics to this great song. Four or five musicians were tasked with writing the music for the song, and as Lulu was to sing it in the movie, she was asked to pick her favourite version. "Thank God she chose the right one" said Don ! But I have often wondered if these other versions of To Sir With Love still exist. Wouldn't it be wonderful if someone could unearth them and ask Lulu to sing them again. What a documentary that would be !

As a kid of 12 in '69, i loved both Lulu and Mary Hopkin.
Now, i dug seeing Jimi here.
His sorta Hey Joe performance was epic.....poor Lulu. She was thinking of a duet.
Jimi, "We're gonna stop playing this rubbish and do something by the Cream,,," Sunshine....
saw here this film was nearly thrown away.

Lulu , Sandie Shaw, Cilla Black Shirley Bassey & Petula Clark were the first Girl singers that I was aware of as a young kid when growing up in England during the late 1960s. It was great to see Lulu being exposed to a younger audience by Take That along with , Sandie Shore with The Smiths & Shirley Bassey with Yello in the 1980s. Thanks for your brilliant musical history lessons 👍❤️

Lulu has been my favourite singer since I was a 1960's high school student. In 1980 I finally was able to meet her when I went to Birmingham in the UK and saw Lulu in concert for 3 consecutive nights at a club. Knowing I had come from California to see her I was invited to hang out with her in her dressing room each night after her show. The next week I had afternoon tea with Lulu at the Ritz Hotel in London. It was my favourite 2 weeks of my life!

To Sir With Love (the song) wasn't exactly a hit in the UK. It was simply the B-side to (I think) Let's Pretend which was a hit. Lulu had had a ton of hits in the UK and Europe and is still going strong today. She's fantastic - what a survivor! I'll be singing Boom Bang A Bang all day now.

Maurice was only 19, when he married Lulu, at her age of 20. They were married for four years.
Lulu was married to John Frieda, for 16 years (?), and had a son, Jordan.

One hit wonder as a pop star. Fame for a metaphorical five minutes with "To Sir With Love" released concurrently with the film featured as its title track/recurring thematic. She lingered on the coat tails of that for about a year then pretty much disappeared from the AM radio airwaves and TV outside the UK, the two avenues of exposure of the time. While I don't think any teen of the era wouldn't know who she was so massive a hit was the film and the song accompanying it throughout late 1967 and 1968, as pop music is by the end of that year the song was spent relegated to occasional play and other than in the UK as host of contrived TV show, so was she. Even an attempt to resurrect the success of her piggybacking 1967's "To Sir With Love" in 1974 by singing the title track of a Bond film "The Man With The Golden Gun" crashed and burned spectacularly failing to chart in the UK or USA, unique for a Bond film title track.

Very much a One Hit Wonder and not a very good one at that. You overstate, somewhat, her claim to fame. Much of her output was banal and, at times, even off-putting. Of all the girl singers from her epoch, she certainly occupies the lower end of the scale in terms of creativity and artistry and was never assumed to be quality material, as they say, by any stretch of the imagination.
