Major incorporated suburbs of Tucson include Oro Valley and Marana northwest of the city, Sahuarita south of the city, and South Tucson in an enclave south of downtown. Communities in the vicinity of Tucson (some within or overlapping the city limits) include Casas Adobes, Catalina Foothills, Flowing Wells, Midvale Park, Tanque Verde, Tortolita, and Vail. Towns outside the Tucson metro area include Benson to the southeast, Catalina and Oracle to the north, and Green Valley to the south.
Tucson was founded as a military fort by the Spanish when Hugo O'Conor authorized the construction of Presidio San Agustín del Tucsón in 1775. It was included in the state of Sonora after Mexico gained independence from the Spanish Empire in 1821. In 1853, the United States acquired a 29,670 square miles (76,840 km2) region of present-day southern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico from Mexico under the Gadsden Purchase. Tucson served as the capital of the Arizona Territory from 1867 to 1877. Tucson was Arizona's largest city by population during the territorial period and early statehood, until it was surpassed by Phoenix by 1920. Nevertheless, population growth remained strong during the late 20th century. In 2017, Tucson was the first American city to be designated a "City of Gastronomy" by UNESCO.
Tucson is sometimes referred to as "The Old Pueblo".
Downtown and Central Tucson
A 19th-century adobe house in the Armory Park neighborhood
Similar to many other cities in the Western U.S., Tucson was developed by European Americans on a grid plan starting in the late 19th century, with the city center at Stone Avenue and Broadway Boulevard. While this intersection was initially near the geographic center of Tucson, that center has shifted as the city has expanded far to the east. Development to the west was effectively blocked by the Tucson Mountains. Covering a large geographic area, Tucson has many distinct neighborhoods.
Tucson's earliest neighborhoods, some of which were redeveloped and covered by the Tucson Convention Center (TCC), include:
El Presidio, Tucson's oldest neighborhood
Barrio Histórico, also known as Barrio Libre
Armory Park, directly south of downtown
Barrio Anita, named for an early settler and located between Granada Avenue and Interstate 10
Barrio Tiburón, now known as the Fourth Avenue arts district, was designated in territorial times as a red-light district
Barrio El Jardín, named for an early recreational site, Levin's Gardens
Barrio El Hoyo, named for a lake that was part of the gardens. Before the convention center was built, the term El Hoyo (Spanish for 'pit' or 'hole') referred to this part of the city. Residents were mostly Mexican-American citizens and Mexican immigrants.
Barrio Santa Rosa, dating from the 1890s, is now listed as a historic district on the National Register of Historic Places.

Born and raised in tuc, moved to Texas and hate it. Sometimes when I miss Tucson, I’ll watch these kinds of videos just to feel a sense of home again.
👍
You don't miss it, it's just what you're used to
These are some awesome shots of downtown! Great footage! Good luck with growing the channel.
Thank you very much!
Aww! My hometown it definitely didn’t look like this when I grew up here. Thank you for the video ❤️
Glad you liked it! 👍

Such a scenic drive through Tucson’s downtown! 🚗🌵 The mix of modern architecture and desert vibes is amazing. what's your favourite thing about downtown Tucson?
This is a beautiful drive --- peaceful and quiet!
I absolutely agree with you 👍
@@RoadTripInsights lol. Thanks.
I have now subscribed. This gives me an opportunity to view different areas of the country, since it's not easy for me to do such a thing with limited income.
Awesome and thank you! More videos are coming out soon for you to enjoy!
@@RoadTripInsights I hope you make them before sunset or on rainy (cloudy) days
Every region of the US has kind of his own vibe. But this Arizona desert style is my favorite.
This video and downtown look amazing! I would love to someday travel to this city...
damn, living in Tucson was the best idea i ever had, i like it cuz everyone is so chill, that’s actually a calm place. And if you’re hispanic, at least 50% of the people speak both languages. Very recommended!
That's awesome!
I'm moving to Tucson late August. Can you tell me a bit of how it is actually living there? I'm military btw
@@cjello1 Ive lived here for about a year, and I don’t know anything about the military here or much about the city in general as I’ve spend most of my time outside of it lol. I absolutely love the area though. If you like to hike or off road or anything similar, there’s great areas just about 30 mins outside of downtown on all sides. Mt Lemmon is my favorite, tucson mountain park and both sides of saguaro national park are also great. A little further south the Vail area has some cool spots. As well as further north there’s lots of places in between here and Phoenix on I10 all less than a 2 hour drive (I really like Picacho state park). There’s lots of old abandoned mining towns too, but you might need an off road vehicle to get to most of them. Sorry I couldn’t be more help with the actual city haha, good luck with your move :)
I agree
What a wonderful insight into the difference between Tucson and other cities like San Francisco where streets are overcrowded (yes, with homeless), too many cars, too many people.
We are told how hot it is in Arizona and yet this did not show this. It showed civility, polite drivers, and polite walkers. Hooray for Tucson!
It's extremely hot in summer. The rest of the year is heaven. The people are very laid back . The drivers are very polite and considerate for sure.
@@jameswatson6 Hooray for Tucson!
I think it gets a little hot in the summer...
Tucson is definitely really bad when it comes to homeless and aggressive people
Thing is not much people means not good economy
Born and raised in Tucson. This was Sunday driving early morning. Since people move from other states they are rude and traffic gets ridiculous. Don't let these videos deceit you. Just remember this was like 6am Sunday morning.
Ok awesome info 👍
I was thinking the same thing. This has to be a Sunday morning. It's the only time downtown Tucson looks like this. And for those thinking there are no homeless here, think again. They mostly live in the washes, until monsoon comes around. Tucson is getting worse and worse.
This is also precisely what I thought, and searched for the comments. Thought it is so quiet, clean, has to be a Sunday, early before people wake.
Hello, is tucason safe for living?
@@linayang9022 Yes
I visited Tucson,it was so beautiful, so wonderful, like a different planet
Tucson is a beautiful city 👍
Beautiful, neat, aesthetic and well-maintained city.
I like Tucson too 👍
@@RoadTripInsights I was born and raised here.
Are you joking? most of the city complete dump and the roads are horrible.
@@brettano Yes he is kidding, Tucson is actually the most beautiful city
@@brettano yeah Tucson is awfully maintained and a borderline embarrassment for AZ. I was there in March and all I could think to myself was "when I'm in Phoenix it's never this bad". But to each their own I guess. It's still an Arizona city so I still like it, just nowhere near as much as I like Phoenix though.
This is a great 4K shot of downtown
Thanks! 👍
I was born in Tucson Arizona I still love it a lot ❤❤❤
Lucky you 👍
Thanks 👍
Gracias amigo 👍
Quisiera llegar a trabajar en es lugar
Thanks for the ride! 🙂👍
Any time!
Most of downtown phoenix looks like a spreadout, cookie cutter suburb. Just from this vid, it definitely seems like tucson *feels* more like a city, instead of being one never-ending boring suburb.
I totally agree with you!
Problem with Tucson’s downtown is that it’s very small.
The energy of the cities are completely different.
Downtown Phoenix is growing getting better for city it’s size and seems bigger then before cranes everywhere
Bro that crazy ‘cause AINT SHIT IN TUCSON. you either from there and cappin or visited phx once.
Tucson is so beautiful. Our gym is opening up in Tucson Arizona
Nice!
Can’t wait to go to film school here
Wow, lucky you! 👍👍👍
Visited Tuscan in1992. My route on Suntrans bus was from Tanque Verde to University of Arizona. If you had put names of areas, it could be better for me.By the way, I didn't see Suntrans bus ,Does it exist?
I’m actually glad i saw this i plan on moving there soon 😎
Awesome, lucky you! 👍
Moving here next year 😍🤭 Arizona is so beautiful from the looks of it. I need to be somewhere w palm trees 😩
Lucky you! 👍
i wonder how downtown will look in the future, its literally land locked by historical districts/ neighborhoods, so i think the only place to expand would be west over the freeway, or on 4th avenue and there is already development going on in both places so its going to be interesting to see
I think it will be interesting to see how downtown will change. Looking at this video you will know how it looked before those changes.
How cool, very beautiful and admirable. Greetings from Brazil.
👍
Yes! Can you do please Marble Falls, Texas | Driving Highway.
I can't wait to get back
Hurry up
I born in yuma Arizona I am going to Tucson Arizona that is wonderful
Lucky you!
Unsure when when this could’ve been filmed, Because there is SO much traffic downtown, and it’s very difficult to park or drive.
Well, I have seen plenty of paid parking space in Tucson
That's what I was going to say! Undoubtedly "filmed" over the weekend and NOT around 4 or 5 pm when everyone is going home! Also notice not many little businesses open anymore, just restaurants and bars!
driving and downtown should never be in the same sentence, but alas American exceptionalism. Thank you for the video!
👍
I moved to Tucson 5 years ago. It's the best kept secret. I love this place.
I liked it too
I’m planning on moving there in a year from Florida
I’m moving there in Late March-April
Hello, is tucson hot? Like the other desert cities? Thank you 😊
@@linayang9022 it does get hot here but generally it's 10 degrees cooler here then it is in Phoenix.
What camera did u use, looks great!
Thank you.
I'm going to Live here soon, it actually looks great city
Lucky you, good decision 👍
As far as I can see from the videos and google maps, US cities are always empty compared to European and Asian cities. What is the reason for this? Are Americans always at home or at work?
Yes, most people prefer to stay at home, especially in Tucson heat
Very very nice ... thank you!
I hope you can make some videos driving slowly between Tucson houses on Christmas evening. I hope also to see a video for 4th avenue (all the street) at night or on a cloudy day. This will be really great.
Glad you like it!

Nice little city
Dand, it's just as empty as whenever I drive around here. I wish Tucson had more to do than go hiking
Or off roading what do you expect Wild West
People are just chilling at home, lots of 50+ communities there
@@familyguy_funny_clipz Exactly. There are things to do. The Pandemic messed everything up. Don't forget about the outdoor music festivals in November and the monthly events they used to have before the Pandemic. First Friday, second Saturdays were fun. The Pima county state fair in April. Pandemic fucked all that up
If you want more entertainment go to the PHX area
That's WHY I love Tucson! The hiking is phenomenal and rich with experiences!

I think it's a wise decision to move there, it's a great place
@@RoadTripInsights I appreciate the response, but do your have more reasoning? Any advice?
@@robstilwell4274 sorry but your question is too general. Tucson is a great family town.
@@RoadTripInsights good areas to live. Good schools. Culture.
The education system is horrible, drug's everywhere, no housing, women and children sex trafficking headquarters is in Tucson Arizona, professor Richard Kellogg Jolly is the leader, law enforcement and system are trafficking.

For some California grass
Lol
after i moved out of San Fransico, California i will move to Tucson, Arizona

Im here from the western books and old Western movies. It talks about TUCAN being a small Mexican town in the wild West in 1800. Didn't think it was a real place in America until i googled it. It does not look like a small Mexican town. Its a every day average American city. Well it is 2024 i guess it makes sense. I think mexico used to own a huge part of the United States until it got pushed back in the 1800s. Im From PA Harrisburg city
Miss my hometown, do they still do downtown saturday night?
Yes they do )
And this is only one section of downtown. They didn't show 4th Ave, Mercado District or main gate square area
That's on my list for the next trip to Tucson
@@RoadTripInsights okay. Especially the MSA annex. It's a low-key hangout area. Shops and restaurants off Congress street pass Tucson convention center. Don't miss out
