    I think this could work. One of the problems Fisker has, as most new startups, is the lack of a dealer network and questions of how will my car be serviced in 10 years. If people can go to their local Nissan dealer and see/purchase a Fisker it will be a lot more appealing.

    The models produced by Magna Steyer are Jaguar E-Pace and I-Pace, Mercedes Benz G-class, BMW Z4 and Toyota Supra. And now also the Fisker Ocean.
    The Austrian Magna Steyer is an experienced car manufacturer. It's not the build quality of the factory.
    In the case of Fisker, the car was launched six months too early, because the software was not yet finished. This is now being worked on with updates according to a tight schedule.
    Only time will tell whether that will be enough to survive the start-up phase.

    If Fiskar has a good design, it could be a good deal for both. Nissan brings production capability that Fiskar probably can't achieve or source elsewhere. And Nissan can probably no longer afford a major breakthrough design effort. Their respective strengths fill in their respective weaknesses nicely... assuming that the Fiskar design is in fact good, and producible profitably by an experienced manufacturer. All big ifs, but what are the alternatives for each? There may not be better options for either. And it could perhaps even work.

    • @Hybridog
      @Hybridog 5 місяців тому +2

      I agree. Having Magna Steyr build the cars in Austria is very expensive. Nissan has excess capacity. Manufacturing of the Ocean and other Fiskars could be moved completely to Japan and produced in quantity and still probably be cheaper than building in Austria. Plus Nissan will surely be allowed to make their own iteration of the Ocean (and others) which would be an easy way fo them to get more EV models. BTW Magna has built a lot of good and famous cars over the years including Mercedes Geländewagen and BMW Z4. You should really look to Jaguar as the cause of the i-Pace being junk.

    Fisker produces a car which is mostly ready for prime time. Their top management has money management issues. Nissan may be able to "tweak" the design with no major changes, begin production in the US, and stop the hemorrhaging of money from the management portion of Fisker. Mr. Fisker may be a fine designer and marketing guru, but he is at least five years away from earning a Mary Barra level salary. So is Mary, but that's a different story.

    This move by Nissan does make sense. I heard that the collaboration between Nissan and Renault over developing EV technology isn't going that smoothly. The French can be difficult to work with, you would know that Sam because of the way that the Australian contract with the French shipyard to jointly build submarines end up.
    If Nissan can get Fisker's technology and designs, maybe tweak them a bit and make them in the US that could work out well.

    • @rogerphelps9939
      @rogerphelps9939 5 місяців тому

      Totally different. The submnarine affair was that the Australians realised that they needed nuclear powered subs to cover the very long distances around their coastline and the Pacific. That meant turning to the UK and the US.

    • @catherinegrimes2308
      @catherinegrimes2308 5 місяців тому

      @@rogerphelps9939 Things went wrong before that. At a meeting shortly after the contract was signed, the French wanted to redesign the submarine, they were patronising towards the Australians, they wouldn't help the Australians set up manufacturing facilities in Australia as was agreed in the contract and the costs were rising. Things started to go wrong from the start.
      The French were warned that things were going wrong.
      The Australians were disgruntled and on reflection they realised that they had signed up for the wrong type of submarine. I think that they contacted the Americans who brought in the British and the preliminaries were agreed at a marque in Cornwall and Macron could have been in a nearby marque.

    Makes sense. Nissan can just take over Fisker and give Fisker shareholders stock in Nissan so it won't really cost them anything.
    The real problem will be making money. Nissan might be able to help them make the cars efficiently and would gain valuable technology (or they both may go out of business together.)

  • @NackDSP

    It's the factory that matters. The product is a prototype without a factory that can produce it at a cost well below the sales price. Nissan may be able to help with material costs as they buy in large enough quantities to get better pricing than Fisker. Nissan manufacturing engineers may also be able to cut some fat out of the Fisker factory. The key is to get costs down and that takes engineering and volume.

    You haven't read the latest Nissan earnings or heard about any financial news concerning Nissan and Renault... Anyway, Nissan's net equity is 42 billion dollars... To prepare a platform for a car like Alaska, you need at least 1.5 billion dollars... So for 400m, Nissan is going to buy part of the rights to produce the Alaska as their own and pay a percentage for each sale to Fisker... It won't be the first time in automotive history... In addition, Nissan earned tons of money lately because of a deal they made with Renault...

    When the SUV craze started here in the US, some manufacturers were caught with their proverbial pants down and had to act quickly to stay in the game. Honda wasn't ready yet, so they worked out a deal with Isuzu to sell one of their SUVs (I think it was the Rodeo) as the Honda Pilot for the first year or so. I'm surprised more legacy automakers haven't done that with EV startups that have done a lot of the legwork ahead of time.

      I actually was thinking about this.
      I think its actually smarter to not jump onto every new thing.
      I started thinking about it, and in hindsight being late to innovations in certain industries is bad.
      However you normally only hear about companies that failed to get on the bandwagon soon.
      One thing to consider is all the new things that were thought were going to blow up actually didn't. Lots of times there are headlines about how some new game changer will break the stats quo. However most do not and they fall into obscurity.
      One thing I can think of is the digital gouges in the late 80s. People probably thought that would have taken off but didn't for another 20 years.
      Point being companies do keep a eye out for what the next big thing is. But lots of new stuff ends up not going anywhere and forgotten about.

      @@baronvonjo1929In the case of some legacy automakers, especially in Japan, they either bet on the wrong horse (hydrogen fuel cells) or decided that EVs were never going to go anyway and did nothing in that space. Toyota and Honda, for example, both spent well over ten years and billions of dollars on hydrogen fuel cell development and after all that time they have almost nothing to show for it: In the entire US there are only about 57 hydrogen fuel cell stations and all of them except one are in California. Combined, Toyota and Honda and a few others sell less than 10,000 HFC cars per year. Hyundai also developed HFC cars, but they did something that the others did not: They also invested in BEV technology and as a consequence they are miles ahead of the rest of the Asian market. The sad thing is, on paper, HFC looks like a dream: Refill in about the same amount of time as an ICE car. At a time when BEV cars were taking 45 minutes or longer to recharge this seemed like the answer, but they've taken so long that BEVs have almost caught up: Hyundai and Kia EVs can charge to 80% in less than 18 minutes and that number will continue to fall.
      Anyways, yeah, it wasn't super obvious that BEVs were the way to go but even after Tesla and others were showing that it can work, some companies still refused to see the light. I hope they are able to catch up and prosper.

I would state that Magna Steyr and Valmet are excellent car production companies with excellent quality of their operations. However crappy English car construction is nothing new and the actual reason why the English car industry is either bankrupt and out or in foreign hands of which the Germans’ seem to be the most beneficial choice. Indian hands seems to be less of an advantage which is why the entire Jaguar brand including E-pace is crap down the toilet. No blame on Magna.

    Well, Marcus was actually on the fence about the Fisker he tested. And he gave many reasons why. The vehicle, its design, its specs are actually good. They're just competing here in the US with Tesla who has the Model Y selling for a little cheaper and who can drop the price on the Model and still make a decent profit. Fisker doesn't have that kind of wiggle room. So you have in Fisker a really compelling vehicle but Tesla has a stronghold on the EV market share at the moment.
    As far as Magna, again...The Jaguar fires, like the Bolt fires have more to do with battery and battery provider than the company simply putting them together. But like GM, it's going to be Jaguar getting all the negative press and having to take responsibility for their total product...battery pack and all.
    As far as the deal goes, I suspect Fisker owns the design of the truck and Nissan will be partnering with them for the design by buying/bailing out Fisker with a sizable stake in the company. Nissan will build and manufacture the truck. The Ocean will most likely continue to be made by Magna.

That said, I do not understand why Nissan could not continue developing its Leaf, which was one of the most successful EV's. While this looks like madness, there's a kind-of genius to this. Consider: if you're a legacy auto maker, and you need to pivot to EVs, and you've got no EV capacity, no EV experience, no EV tooling, nothing ... you can buy an EV company that's going bust. There are so many EV company going *pop* right now in China, who make perfectly good EVs, this has got to be worth thinking about. Will it work in this case ..? Errr ... I doubt it. The battery problem is probably mostly related to the battery manufacturer.

    I usually love your channel but Marquez reviewed a car with old software. That’s Fisker’s fault for but Marquez should review it againz. The Ocean is ready to go and available. Any legacy company would benefit from rebadging the product

      @ABa-os6wm No. They'll have to bail out Toyota. They're too big to fail. That's all they can afford.

    Why you call him Énrique FIsker? His Name is HENRIK. He is from Denmark. not France. just say it as it is spelled! BTWMarques Brownlee. Did'nt say it is the worst car he has ever driven. it is the worst EV available because of faulty software. when the software gets better, then not much to complain about! in fact it has already become better in update 2.0 which no big automotive reviewer has tested.

    100% Fisker is a great designer. But couldn’t run his business if his life depended on it.

    Kia would be better suited. Fisker’s got great ideas and features and interesting concepts on deck. Unfortunately, the execution falls short. With Kia’s attention to detail and quality work, the two companies could get together and give Tesla some real competition. Of course, I’m dreaming but it’s fun to think about.
