*"Forget your lust for the rich man's gold, all that you need is in your soul."* Tell me a single line in any other song that strips the meaning of life right down to the very ground with the level of passion and blatent, honest sincerety as well as this one verse in Simple Man does. Ronnie Van Zant was truly a musical genius if ever rock saw one.

This is my favorite song by them with a great message. Great southern rock band from the 60's-80's. It is very sad what happened to this band in losing so many members in a plane crash in 1977. They had lots of great songs such as "Sweet Home Alabama", "Call Me The Breeze", "Tuesday's Gone", "That Smell", "The Ballad Of Curtis Loew", "What's Your Name", "Gimme Three Steps", "Saturday Night Special" etc.

And only ONE had done a great job. The one who did - Shinedown - could do it, because they had married in the van-Zant-clan and got the permission.
And their life-performance in germany is - well as good as any played version of LS. At least 99%.

After Gary's mother and Ronnie's grandmother had passed away the two of them were talking about the advice the women had given them for how to live their lives and they decided to write a song about it. It took them about an hour to write the song. They probably couldn't have imagined that fifty years later people would be listening to it and talking about what a great song it is.

@@JaquelineGoodspeed The original was done by the songwriter, Steve Gaines with his band Crawdad. He gave it to LS for their last album. Ronnie did great when he hired Steve Gaines. It was so tragic that both him and his sister died in the crash. She was one of the backup singers, called The Honkettes. The backup singers weren't at the Oakland Coliseum performance but they were at Knebworth in 1976. Steve's version. ua-cam.com/video/PT3XYUegiNs/v-deo.html

Oh I know skynrd. Love them. There's more to that crash then what was told. I believe Ronnie and the band had good hearts. And yes the band never got to really take off with Steve. He's one of my favorites of the band. The autopsy report on his sister, her throat was slit. But the industry covers that up. But the other band member died with his throat slit too. Coincidence? Nah.

It was released on their 1st album in 1973 and AL Cooper who helped produce this album did not want to put it on the album. The whole album is awesome starting with "I Ain't The One." From 1973 until the plane crash in Oct 1977 this band made alot of great music. Great band and my favorite band. Everything they came out with was great. But this song worked overtime at being just a simple message wrapped around some awesome instrumentation. I'm impressed that you two seem to easily see the meanings behind most of the songs you react to. My generation, I believe, had the greatest music in the history of music. Only sad thing is, we won't be around forever to continue the legacies of the great bands and singer/songwriters. I would like to see some reactions to writers like Carol King, Kathryn Bayer Sager, John Denver, Barry Manilow and so many others who helped shape the musical history of the 70s. Thanks you two for honoring the artists you've reacted to so. Keep up the greatness!!!

Lynyrd Skynyrd has always been a guitar powerhouse. Even up until Gary Rossingtons death just not long ago they are a powerhouse. They lost a great guitarist in the crash, Steve Gaines. Ed King left the band not long before the crash. After the crash Alan Collins died. when they regrouped they got Ricky Medlocke who was a drummer for them in the early days of the group. He is also an outstanding guitar player and singer. He had formed the group Blackfoot before rejoining Lynyrd Skynyrd. Blackfoot is a group you should check out. A good starting place with them would be their song Train, Train or Highway Song. Diary of a Working Man is also a good song.

At 65 I heard Lynyrd Skynyrd from the first album till October 20, 1977 when the crash happened in a swamp in Mississippi because the plane ran out of fuel. Ronnie VanZant, Steve Gaines, Cassie Gaines and road manager Dean Kilpatrick were killed plus the two pilots. Ronnie's baby brother Johnny VanZant took over the lead vocals for Skynyrd in 1987 and an guitarist for Blackfoot Rickey Madlocke who did play with Skynyrd for a very short time in 1971 as a drummer. Anyway, there is nothing i do not know about this band, even to say that the last album LS released in 2012 called "Last of a Dying Breed was the best Johnny and Skynyrd put out. I love every song on it and it was classic Skynyrd if you ask me. Anything else you wanta know about this group ask.

Lynyrd Skynyrd gotten their band name from then coach, Leonard Skinner of their old high school in Jacksonville, Florida. Back in early 70's, Coach Skinner got on members of the band because they worn long hair (hippie era) as Coach was clean cut. As a goof and revenge, they named band after Coach Skinner. Then band became well-known internationally. One concert in Jacksonville, they invited Coach Skinner onstage with them. Skinner is mentioned in Rock Hall of Fame.

Rossington and Collins played all the leads. Van Zandt played rhythm a lot and one of the others played guitar too. There was almost always 3 guitars playing at any given moment and sometimes four. You probably want to listen to The Ballad Of Curtis Lowe, keeping in mind that this song is from a Deep South band over 50 years ago. And if you’re enjoying this Southern Fried Rock sub genre, you really ought to listen to Molley Hatchet, Dreams I’ll Never See. There’s an incredible guitar solo that you can listen to over and over and never get tired of. Much love ❤️

The next Skynyrd song to review must be "Tuesday's Gone".
There aren't many good live recordings of that one (of the original Line-up featuring Ronnie Van Zant, though there are many performances afterward), but the album version is amazing.
The Mellotron adds a lot to the song, but as usual, the guitars are the star of the show.
The lyric is about saying goodbye to love. But if you didn't hear the lyric at all, you would absolutely pick up on that from the guitar alone, which tells as much of the story as the vocals. This was one of their first songs, and probably their greatest in terms of composition, which is impressive because it's very simplistic, but every little nuance is flawless, and they all serve the song well.

Metallica also covered that one with an all-star line-up of guest musicians, including Gary Rossington (one of the founding members of Skynyrd, who survived the tragic end of his bandmates). Also featuring Jerry Cantrell (Alice in Chains), John Popper (Blues Traveler), Pepper Keenan (Corrosion of Conformity), and Les Claypool (Primus). Hetfield's vocals on that track are amazing. They take a more Modern Country approach to the song. The song rocks, but it's not a "rock song" in this version.

Given a choice between the original or the cover, go with the original, but the cover doesn't disappoint.

Not all of them passed away in the plane crash. Ronnie Van Zants brother took over the group. The last surviving member of the band passed away just a couple of months ago

The next incarnation of Skynyrd after the plane crash was a band Alan Collins and Gary Rossington put together, simply called the Rossington Collins Band. Perhaps it would have been the direction Lynyrd Skynyrd took their music sans the plane crash. You guys should check it out.

You must try Can’t You See by the Marshall Tucker Band for a Southern Rock classic

Awesome song for sure. Shinedown does an outstanding cover that is phenomenal. Would be a good one for reaction to see an updated version.
I’d really like to see you do Twelve Foot Ninja - Coming for you (official video). Not super hard but an outstanding band that has humor! Or Volbeat - Still Counting! This is from a former death metal musician that wanted a change and this is just a great tune by a great band!

They were just coming into another phase with Stevie Gaines newly in band. Gave them three excellent guitarists and Stevie was helping write some great songs. Sadly he died along with his sister Cassie and singer Ronnie in crash

This is a song that's based in truth. Many of the members were related or grew up together. This something that thier mothers actually said to them. They had to fight to record this song. To the point they locked their producer out of the studio to get it done. Personally I feel this is one of the best from them.

Every song from them tells a real story about life and what they have experienced, “ That Smell “ tells about the band and drugs, alcohol abuse that they were living with from their last album Street Survivors
