    So much fun to find a Swede moving abroad to live off-grid! All the off-grid Swedes I've seen have stayed in Sweden.
    My husband is also foreign, and we've moved around the Nordics for a few years, but are likely aiming for Spain, though we've gone through a lot of countries in our thoughts (everything from Canada and the US to Ireland, and even just staying in Sweden or Norway).
    I'm right now looking through as many off grid channels as I can to see what people say about how they make a living, because husband mine is really hesitant and wants to be sure at least one of us can have a full-time job (which is looking difficult in Spain), while I try to assure him that tons of people do it without proper employment.

      @@StarfireReborn Thank you for your kind words. I know it can take a lot of trying and giving, without necessarily getting enough back, to find a place to feel at home, where your presence can feel more meaningful and appreciated. Even if on paper some places, jobs or organizations may seem like a perfect match, it could be even more important just to feel welcomed and free. I've sometimes jumped on trains with likeminded people that derailed quickly when people started competing for the same types of roles and glory :D I don't know if that made sense. I hope you found your roots already! :)

    Wondering if you could look into the info to be a general contractor? They would have all the code requirements! My husband got the books as if were going to get his contractor’s license 😉. So happy to be part of your journey ❤

    • @mikaelnorlen7734
      @mikaelnorlen7734 10 місяців тому +1

      I'm not sure if I understand what you mean by general contractor. In italy there is a person called Geometra that works kind of like a spider in the web and in theory should know all the requirements and talk to the municipality/regional offices etc. But for some reason, different Geometras can arrive at different conclusions and there always seem to exist some secret workarounds. For example, if you want to build a small structure to put solar panels on your land, there is a lot of bureaucracy involved. But if you put it on wheels you're good to go! :D

    • @julieknitsandspins
      @julieknitsandspins 10 місяців тому +1

      @@mikaelnorlen7734 Here in the US there are inspectors who
      Have to approve for example of the electrical installed is correct to “code” before the construction can continue. So a general contractor would know the rules. It sounds to me that Geometras would be the same as inspectors here. The code requirements should be the same for everywhere in the US but I’m sure there are inspectors who are asses 🙄. Maybe you can ask the head of the well and/or the solar installers for information. They should have rules/codes they have to follow and their installs will be approved by the Geometras? I’m sure you will be friendly with the installers and the Geometras who in turn will want to help you!

The two of you are young, healthy and strong, you share your love and your dreams, you have knowledge, abilities, enthusiasm and a huge zest for life: there is no doubt in my mind you will succeed! 💕💕

      We had an apartment that we sold, basically funded from our families. I guess the only advice I can give, if you are willing to move around, is to find a place where houses and land is cheap. Sometimes the cheap areas are even more beautiful. And sometimes cheap can be really really cheap. I know in Italy some sparsely populated municipalities have been selling properties for 1€ or renting out apartments for free, just to bring life back to their villages. We passed by some of those areas and were definitely considering some of the places. Most of them, as most houses in general, were in villages. We were looking for something more off, otherwise it could've worked. Good luck!

      @@YanavM Sounds great! So good to hear that people are studying these things. I haven't actually started thinking too much about our garden yet as we've been so focused on the house. I guess we have to do a more dedicated episode on it later so we can discuss it better.
      But in general now that you mentioned this, What do you think about something like this?
      1. Start with just hand planting some symbolic trees that we like.
      2. Buy a diverse mix of low-growing, perennial cover crops to protect and cover the land suppress invasive plants and reduce the need for pruning.
      3. Buy seed mixes or transplant more trees and bushes, a bit ordered by height to define natural rooms.
      4. Meanwhile Martina creates a beautiful garden with all the plants she loves (she is the herbalist)
      5. I also want to plant a lot of bamboo!
      6. Start digging swales for water retention.
      I think I would like to call our strategy low-maintenance ordered chaos gardening.

      @mikaelnorlen7734 Yes, I think this sounds like a great plan! And for the cover crops, try to choose species that do fixate nitrogen. There are even some trees that can fixate nitrogen as well. Also, think about planting trees next to the house to provide shadow during summer. And yes I think a low maintenance garden is important now you are working most of the time on the house. And for the herb garden, think about the different zones in your garden. For something you visit daily, place it next to the house🙂
