  • Emma and Edo were once a hotel stage show dance team, until they quit to live out their dream of rescuing animals (Emma) and farming (Edo) on the island of Tenerife. They bought cheap land and began to transform the rocky, dusty soil into a lush homestead.
In the beginning, it was just Emma, Edo, and some family toiling on the land to create basic accommodation. This was at a time of bare basics, with no electricity, running water, or toilets. Soon they were joined by volunteers, and they got creative building homes out of old vans, hillside caves, mud and clay, and scrap materials (including a lot of old pallet wood).
After a couple years, they had expanded beyond an animal sanctuary into a full-fledged community with 40 to 50 volunteers living on-site who all worked to live as lightly on the land as possible. The Tenerife Horse Rescue community is completely off-grid, using solar power, but also clever inventions like a horse poo water heater and a pedal-powered washing machine.
Since the average rainfall on Tenerife is between 11 to 30 millimeters for most of the year, all water is reused. Kitchen and shower water (greywater) is filtered with natural materials like pebbles and papyrus. Toilet water (blackwater) goes through a more rigorous process of biofilters. First it goes into tanks where it is oxygenated to separate liquids and solids, then it flows into a biofilter basin which works as a hydroponic pond (gravel, water, plants but no soil). Then it goes through a biofilter basins which use gravel and papyrus to trap particles and compounds after which it is finally clean enough to water the garden.
To feed what has now become a small village of people and animals, the villagers have graduated from dumpster diving to “freeganism”: they have an established relationship with a local supermarket to collect all damaged, ugly or out-of-date food. Every day, three volunteers pick up new van loads of food, it is then sorted for humans or animals.
To be sure that nothing gets wasted, and to give back to the community, they’ve gone one step further by registering as a local food bank so they can distribute food to local low-income families and other animal sanctuaries.

Yes, I didn't understand why there wasn't a lot of dialogue between the camera people/persons and the people of this place... in other episodes, when it's about humans this-and-that, they go on-and-on about the smallest things... and in this one, where there seemed many interesting things to discuss and understand, nothing much was said.

I found a great Indian video about a family that moved from the city to an overfarmed area where locals were struggling with drought/water table lowering etc. This urban family used Permaculture principles to restore their degraded block and quickly made it so productive (three years i think) that all their neighbours wanted to learn about Permaculture too. Its a great video, should be easy to find.. There are online courses i think, if you can't travel to learn about how to do it.

i'm noticing more and more of these types of communities springing up in various countries, its great to see. Ever since Permaculture practices have really spread around the world, i see transformative communities springing up also, If you are wishing to be involved, there are Permaculture courses even online nowadays - and probably some group near you doing either this or learning to build with straw bale or adobe, you name it...(create a house that doesn't need fossil fuels to heat or cool it). If i was young i would be out there looking for what's happening near me, or that i could easily travel to so i could help out. Good luck to all!

That was fantastic. That aspect called Freeganism is interesting and it has to be acknowledged that it takes some special co-operation from supermarkets to facilitate it. Even though it is a win win situation there is a history of antagonism from commercial operators and it's great to see that ridiculous 'waste' being put to good use. Keep up the amazing work!

    • @pipfox7834
      @pipfox7834 Рік тому +1

yes, some places i guess have very strict rules relating to ''food hygeine'' or what have youl. Where we are in southern Australia, in the cities most supermarkets are very aware that the ''wastage'' can be safely repurposed and are willing to help out. Our universities also work with primary producers to encourage them to re-badge non perfect fresh produce (apples, pears, carrots etc) that might be slightly the wrong shape or size, and resell it separately in bulk bags for the bargain bins. Its a win win, as the budget conscious shopper gets a cheaper deal and the produce is not just ploughed back into the ground or dumped. Our government here is doing a lot to reduce waste that way....thankfully.

For water, all they need is to take water from the ocean, then using the sunshine and some recycled panes of glass to create a type of greenhouse where the water is heated by the sun and the evaporated water collects on the glass which is angled down so the condensation trickles down into a catchment trough, like a plastic pipe cut in half, and the water travels along that into a water storage tank. The leftover salt can be collected and used or even sold as sea salt, if they use a Food Safe system of making it in stainless steel trays or whatever is required it could be packaged as Tenerife Sea Salt, "Buy this salt to help support the animal sanctuary."

Love how everyone works together. I would make it my goal to grow and become as self sufficient as possible in case the stores stop donating. Would like to create a kibbutz or small house community here in Texas.

@ruth37331 it wasn't explicit in the video, but it looks to me that they are slowly buidling a food forest of sorts, using Permaculture (Permanent Agriculture) principles. This template is fantastically successful wherever it is adopted, but it does take time to establish all the ''moving parts''. I wish Kirsten had asked more questions about that side of it, because you are right: its better to be self reliant in case of shortage. I was stuck on an island once due to a bad storm, and we all had to pool our food resources til the ferry resumed service!

That free "waste" food is mindblowing!!! Why are there starving people on this earth? 😭🙌🙏💖🌎

I love how EVERYTHING here is reclaimed, refurbished, repurposed and resourcefully used. All of this initially from saving the animals and the land. I only wish I was young and could go there. I have always detested waste and seeing this community makes me so happy & hopeful for the future. I hope many people see this and learn how to live simply, sustainably and joyfully.

Amazing story as always. I am interested in the people that live in this place. How does one end up living in such a community? How long do the people stay? Why did they decide to leave 'normal' society? I think this kind of life is in all aspects better and healthier than modern 'normal' lifestyles.

I've lived there and planning to go back. Most of the volunteers have found us trough Workaway nowadays I guess. Some stay for 1-2 weeks, most 1-3 months, some have been there years. For me I felt that "normal" society isolated me and couldn't give me real purpose. That's my main reason to go to Tenerife but everyone has their own reasons. Short term volunteers mostly are just on their holidays. ☺️❤️

@rubenk202 you can also go WOOFING around the world, every country has quite a few places to do this (similar to Workaway). It's mainly organic small farms seeking short term volunteers who want to learn about organic farming. See also Permaculture communities, these are groups interested in a transformative way of creating food and co existing with nature (its a system that does not need fertilisers and poisons, very productive if its done properly). There are Permaculture courses and workshops all around the world, in every country.

well everywhere in the West, anyway! WWOOFING stands for Willing Workers on Organic Farms., where you work for board and keep.
