- It's finally here!! The much anticipated A500 Mini gets it's release (at least here in the UK it does) today!! To celebrate I present to you my guide to adding your own games to the console via WHDLoad, on your own USB stick. It's a fairly simply process, so follow along with me and you'll soon have your shiny new A500 Mini full to the brim with your own games!

I've been having trouble all day and have tried copying a few UA-cam channels to no avail. It's the same with your instructions I'm afraid, which I have followed step by step. Whatever I do I keep getting the screen telling me the download package isn't installed on the USB stick. The differences on my system that might have something to do with it are
1. I can only format the stick in exFAT (default) or NTFS
2. My laptop operates with Windows 10 but the screen appearance differs from yours, though I can't see why that should matter.
I've e-mailed Retro Games for help but all in all a very frustrating day.
@@RalphAstley I don't think the mini recognises USBs that are too big, just tried a 480mb one and it recognised it straight away maybe 4/8gb is maximum size?
@@RalphAstley oh no really? That sucks. The only thing I was wondering was if it might be the usb stick itself? I bought a new SanDisk stick especially to use with the mini, as I used the same type in my c64 maxi. Do you know what brand yours is? It might also be the capacity. If its too big it could cause an issue. That is speculation on my part though. Can't understand why Fat32 is not an option
@@DrNotAsEvil I started with a stick that had 8Gb memory and not realising the size might be a problem I went out and bought a 256Gb memory. I'll have to get hold of something with less memory and try that.
@@YouveBeenGamed I didn't know about the size issue - have tried two - Lexar (8GB) and Verbatim (256GB). Now on the lookout for something smaller.

I wish that there was a way to provide a custom menu carousel for WHDLoad, even if it would be a format specific the TheA500 (e.g., a Cover.jpg and Cover.txt in the archive or right next to it named like the archive). But still, this is awesome! Already prepared my list of games to put on it, though it seems that it'll be until Late May/Early June before it's available in the USA.
Yeah I agree adding games to the actual carousel would be awesome. I know some mods came out for the c64 to do that, but I didn't mess with them. Feel sorry for you guys having to wait so long. Really sucks
It's ok you'll end up with 2000 games and the carousel become impractical anyway. Just a simple text list is fine.
Cannon Fodder was the first game I added to my A500mini. It's just the game you have to have! 😁👍

I discovered yesterday that you can use a PS4 controller via the USB, this adds a new level of control when playing sensible soccer, simply brilliant.

I’ve ordered my a500. So excited for a blast of nostalgia! Hopefully adding games goes smoothly. Anyone know if there are any issues in using a MAC to format usb drive then add the games??
I think you're fine with a mac mate. I have a video on here with how to do all that on Windows. Some of it may also apply to mac
Got mine today too, had to re-download all my games though as they were adf files. Had no idea it could play CD32 files.
Apparently they are adding adf support in an update, at a later time. That's the rumour anyway. Hope it's true!
The version of Cannon Fodder is not from the Amiga CD-32. The CD edition had video and stuff on it. And this version is only 1.4 megabytes.
I just tried to install some games on my new A500 mini. Used an 8gb USB drive (FAT32). Downloaded the .lha files. But when I select a custom game on the A500, it starts loading but after a few seconds a blue AmigaDOS prompt windowd pops up and that's it. Also with the included Citadel game. Any idea what I could do?

Yeah I think we'll need a keyboard fir those. Unless there's a way to map them to the controller. Hmmm that might actually work. Maybe I'll mess around with that later. I HATE those fighting bits!!
Is it just me or do all emulation devices seem to be graphically lower in quality than an original Amiga 500 games? Is that just part of the emulation process where they seem to be more pixelated or am I getting old and my fond (distant) memories of playing games like Kick Off 2, Xenon 2, Shadow of the Beast, Supercars 2, SWOS, Flashback for hours on end being remembered through rose-tinged glasses? I’ve played Amiga games on PC, Xbox and seen lots of videos of games being played with PiMiga and A500 Mini but they always look inferior - am I going mad? Cheers
It could be the difference between playing them on the old original CRT TVs against playing them on the modern flatscreens. They tend to show up a lot more of the little flaws etc. Just a theory of course
ive just ordered the A500 mini , my one will come with a usb stick with AMiNIMiga on it , have you tried it or know much about AMiNIMiga? also dropped you a sub mate

None of the amiberry games load for me which is a bummer since they're the ones I want to try out (check out Denaris if you want to confirm). Otherwise, it's been a fun trip down memory lane playing games I couldn't but wanted to (and now realise were better after all on the C64 like Creatures and Armalyte)
I've been hearing this from other people. It's a realy shame no-one seems to be able to get them to work thus far. Glad you're still having fun though. You never know, these issues may be ironed out with future updates
hi. do you feel the desire to show us how to install some music demo's like JesusOnE's on the stick. I like to run some. but i know how to do it with the games.
but Dan Wood showed us demos running but i cant get it working. when i click on a demo (i downloaded from whdload-de) it goes to Amiberry and setpatch not found and then it says file created but then it remains silent. :(

I think it would be beyond my abilities right now, as I think it is a problem with the A500 Mini itself when it comes to running anything Amiberry. I have spoken to dozens of people who have tried Amiberry with the same error you mentioned always being the end result. It also happened to me last night on a bunch of games. In fact the only ones that failed were Amiberry. Until they release some kind of fix we may not ever be able to load that stuff. I'll keep trying though, and if I have any kind of breakthrough I'll do a video on it
It looks like if you need to create your own WHDLoad package, you need access to an Amiga, in addition to the disks / disk images. The WHDLoad web site includes a dev package for creating new packages, and the docs in the package make it fairly clear that it's run from Workbench or an Amiga CLI.
However, it may be possible to package these up from an emulated environment such as WinUAE - actually I'd be surprised if it were not possible.
On the whole, I'll probably just run those games from WinUAE. I might go through my disk images (made from actual floppies...) and see if there are any worth coding up. Main one I'm thinking of at the moment is Lost Treasures of Infocom. Probably exceeds my hassle factor though...
Zak McCracken and the Alien Mindbenders is also missing. That one will be difficult as it uses manual-based copy protection.

Yeah I'll probably just wait for the rumoured adf support rather than mess about too much, though it's cool that you can do that sort of thing
@@YouveBeenGamed Hmm - just checked and there IS a Zak McKracken image up there. No LTOInfocom though. Also no Gravity Force 2.
If it's uncracked, there's a copy of the manual online.
One of these days I have to figure out what to do with all my old Amiga software. I still have most of it, haven't touched it in years - would donate to a good cause but the shipping would be a pain in the neck. I remember buying "Yolanda" specifically because I had Amiga games beginning with A-Z except for Y :-)

@@YouveBeenGamed well never had 1200 only 500. but when taking a 2 year trip round europe i picked up cd32 and 50 games in germany for peanuts and loved it so happy see they work.
@@themadmoderator8465 same here, I had a 500 and then decided one day to go for a CD32 and it was awesome. I sold it about 8 years ago for practially nothing. One of my worst decisions EVER 😢
apologies if this is a really obvious question, but I can't find the answer anywhere - is it possible to delete any/all of the pre-loaded games?
There is no way that I know of. Maybe some clever hackers have managed to, but that ain't me 🤣

Update... it does not work with exfat for sure for me, tried two 128gb drives that need exfat...due to size i think. If i remember, fat 32 only went up to a certain size back in the day..hence exfat. However..my old 4gb stick works with fat32. Happy days, delete all them rubbish .lhs files your never gonna play, and you are good to go fron what i see.
Exactly what I was about to advise my friend. You need a 32gb stick or under as fat32 can only be used on that size stick or under. But hey, you soved the problem so I'm happy for you! Enjoy Turrican 2, it's a bloody great game!

Is it possible to play Amiga games which are .ipf files with the A500 mini or only . lha?
Hmmm I've not tested that, but I alos haven't heard that it's possible either! Might have to test one later

I have problems with secret of monkey island and operation stealth. They don't start. I've tried different setting with the memory. But nothing will work. Setpatch not found does appear.
It sounds to me like you have the amiberry versions of those games installed and there is a problem running them right now. If yo go the lemonamiga.com, and search for the games and then redownload them (i show you how to do that in this video) then those versions of the game should work. Hope that helps

I received my new A500-Mini, loving it with the games installed....:)
But I have downloaded the bonus game Citadel to a USB Stick after installing THEA500 WHDLoad Package, but I`m getting an error code when it tries to load.
the error code is:-
DOS-Error #205
(object not found)
on locking SaveDir "Saves:Savegames/"
Am I doing something wrong?
I would be very grateful if you can point me in the right direction
I've tried a new 2.0 32gb USB Stick formatting at FAT32, and a factory reset via the menu but every game I try loading off the USB it comes up the same error has above.
I`m just getting a bit frustrated with it now :(

i had this error too, are you using winrar? because when i downloaded winrar and tried again i managed to start the games. Hope this helped.
Is there a limit to how many zipped games can be held on the drive heaps of my games aren’t showing up
There is a limit of 250 per folder. But you can use multiple folders to get around it
I tried multiple folders but heaps still don’t show up, organised them in alphabetical folders but still no luck
how did you get on with Indy? i remember you needed a keyboard for the fighting sequences

Got my mini 500 today I've followed the video but keeps saying I've not got the whdload software on my USB, im going wrong somewhere I'm guessing?
2 things it could be. You stick needs to be compatible and formatted to FAT32. Then secondly you have to unzip the whdload package directly to the root of your usb. THEA500 folder should be the first thing on the stick.

Yeah the guide is all i got. Only the influencers got a fancy manual, we have to download an online version. We're not worthy apparently!

Nah you're not a pain my friend. I use a USB 2.0 it's a SanDisk Cruzer Blade. Putting up a little video about it tomorrow actually

i find that most load fine from usb but the amiberry launchers dont load skidmarks ,new zealand story and turrican dont load for me at least
I haven't come across any problems so far but I'm sure I will at some point. I guess it's expected this early on
I can't get any to work that come up with the Amiberry Menu, all fail. Haven't been able to get any Turrican or Lemmings to work or Superfrog, Xenon II or Settlers :( A lot of the older games work straight away without hassle such as Hunter, Chuck Rock, Troddlers and a few more like Bubble & Squek. One tip for everyone is that the A500 mini is very low powered so trying to use USB extension leads for the mouse and joypad draws too much power and prevents the USB drive loading anything. You'll need a POWERED USB hub if you want to use USB extension cables or want more USB ports. Also the auto crop function works great for USB games to make the screen image larger. Have tried messing with the advanced menu settings to try and get my fav games to run from USB but nothing has worked so far. Hopefully someone will figure it out or we'll have to wait for a firmware upgrade.
@@scotchthistle6604 I've yet to dive too deeply in as I spent a while recording and editing this video. So far only tested the 4 games in the video and they all worked. It's frustrating to hear people are starting to have a few issues but I guess it's gonna happen in the first few months. Hopefully the can iron out some if not all things with a few firmware updates. I'm sure we'll get a ton of support as they seem to love this project! I sure hope so anyway
Yeah ive tested Turrican 1 and it doesnt work but the others in the series do also Aladdin has glitches and sound issues

@@YouveBeenGamed Pleased to say I found an old 1GB USB and reformatted that to FAT32 and it's working a treat. Had fun playing Lotus 2, Lemmings and The Settlers this afternoon- managed to sneak an hour to myself whilst the kids and wife were out!

I got mine yesterday and I booked time off from work for it. I found that some of the games crashed at different points (back to the future 2) and the guardian angel ran really fast I don't know how to fix it or if they will need to include it in a firmware update have you experienced that?
I must admit when a game works I haven't had it crash on me yet, or run fast. I've had a few not work at all, but they were all Amiberry files, and they all failed the same way. I haven't had to tinker with the advanced settings yet, or I would advise you. I know that some people have found they can slow games down by changing a few settings. Might be worth looking to see if there is a video out there that can help with that specific problem. Wish I could be of more help. It's either that or hang in there for an update sadly

Vroom runs really fast and the screen flickers. There is an expert settings menu option which I have turned on but can't figure out how to access it when in game.
@@Pulsed101 not sure if you've figured this out by now. You need to press home and go back into the USB stick. Then press menu and the options should pop up. Once you've tinkered, back out and then use home to resume your game
Today I decided to buy USB keyboard. In some WHDload games its really a huge issue to make good and optimal configuration for the gamepad, virtual keyboard sometimes is not practice and even sometimes it even doesnt appear.
Did you try using the tip I suggested for the virtual keyboard in this video? It's worked for me every time so far. I have a usb keyboard but if I use it I have to unplug something else, which is a little frustrating! Lol
@@YouveBeenGamed yeah! I exactly face this problem. Try to play frontier- Elite 2. Control for mouse and keyboard....work well. Unless you quit the game (when not through the save t
or through F10.) And then the system is fucked up. Even you switch mouse or keyboard to joypad, then its not working again and i had to switch off whole system. Too much few USB slots! We need at least four!
Hired guns...i moved a bit forward. Start the game, pick up 4 character...but wasnt able to start the game itself. 😡
But on the other hand Fire Force work well combination joypad plus keyboard.
So still there is lot of stuff we have to try and find the right way how to do. I believe in the end we find it.
Just to be patience.

@@YouveBeenGamed one more example from yesterday..I played Alien Breed (1st) and i wasnt able to change to a new weapon i bought in Intex. I tried all keys on virtual keyboard. When I played it joypad + USB keyboard then its working simple (i think is left shift) and the weapons changed.

Wish they would’ve added an option to toggle A/B buttons for when using a joystick. Massive oversight unless your thumb is 6” long🤦♂️

you can remap the joystick buttons and swap the a and b butttons I had to do that for xenon 2
Yesterday I tried to use memory card reader with 8 GB card which I formated to FAT32. I follow manual and this useful (THX!) video.
It was not working. USB didnt appear.
Today morning I bought regular 64 GB USB. It was in exFAT format and was not possible to make format to FAT32 similarly to the memory card as I mentioned before.
But in properties of USB it shows its FAT32 format. And its working.
That's a great victory! I'm not quite sure how you managed it, but let's just take it! 😂

And no USB at home. Only memory cards and reader. I thought it should work but was not.
And in case of USB...if you make rightclick and choose properties then shows some info (eg. available space of memory) and also information that type of files is FAT32...

From some games I tried during this day, I have already bunch of things to solve...(all games downloaded from amigalemon pages as those pre-installed zip files).
Hired guns...virtual keyboard not working...I didnt move deeper then ,,start the game,,.

@@senaoutofspace apparently someone on Facebook just said there is a setting in the advanced setting menu to bring up the virtual keyboard. I've been having trouble with it on the WHDLoad games too. I haven't looked yet, but I will later!
I tested one CD32 games so far and it worked, well it loaded at least!
Yep just gotta keep trying and eventually we'll succeed. Either that or we have to wait for their bug fixes lol

Hmmmm that's weird because none of my games from there came unzipped. They have to remain zipped to work. Try the CD32 version, as I did in the video and see if that is any better

I would say 8gb is ideal. I have a SanDisk 32gb though which works fine. I think if you're using an unbranded stick I'd say stick to the lower capacity. That's what I've heard. Hope that helps!

Big shame the controller appears to lag quite a bit. Try Pinball Dreams and you have to react far too much in advance as the delay is quite noticeable. Anyone notice this too?

I had the same issue but changed my tv setting to game mode and it fixed it.

The games do not need to be in the A500 folder, they can be put whevere you want on the stick. That's why the free Citadel game is in an A500 Games folder when unzipped.
Cool to know thanks. I guess for neatness maybe it's not a bad idea, even if it's not required. I've actually put my games in multiple folders now, just to keep the whole thing tidy

hmmmm a lot of people have had trouble with their memory stick. If you're having trouble I'd advise starting there. Maybe a smaller capacity one, and a known brand. Try it and see, if you have spares

format it fat32. then download the THEA500 WHDLoad package from their site. extract it and drop the THEA500 folder to the root of your usb stick.. if this dont work just try another usb...i use a micro sd reader atm and works perfect with thousands of games loaded already
Yeah I can only echo what overoula wrote. It seems the memory card has to be a little more precise than we first thought. I always buy SanDisk and they have worked with all of my mini consoles. Try keeping the size small, around 8gb maximum, format to fat32 and drag and drop that whdload package folder directly to the root. Let me know how it goes my friend
@@YouveBeenGamed i use 32gb sandisk no problems . You just need the right stick and to have their TheA500 folder on the root

SWOS 97-98 version works fine for me. Try fiddling with the JIT and Copper settings.
This is what I wanted to know about but he didn't go into career mode to find out.
Every time I try to play on my Amiga forever emulator in career mode it crashes & the same goes for the rasberry pie & I can't seem to get championship manager games working in whdload as well.
I know I can play on the PC for sensible world of soccer for free but I need a Internet connection to play the game.
Championship Managers are fine on my PC.

@@davidearl1510 by 'he' do you mean me? Because the purpose of the video wasn't to test every game completely but to help people set up their whdload. If I was to thoroughly test every game it would be a long video 🤣. That being said this us a game I love so at some point I will be trying everything I know to get this game working as I NEED it to!

I did mess with the advanced settings. No fix for now. Test drive 1 works perfectly though.

I took my memory card reader (dont know if this is problem), I put 8 GB card in it, erased it, made format to FAT 32. Then i downloaded WHDLOAD pack from amiga500 mini web. Unpacked it on that card. Then downloaded WHDload files on lemonamiga pages (those you did) and unzipped put them on the card as you did in your video.
Problem is at all...i put it in Amiga USB and nothing appeared in the game caroussel. Like Amiga doesnt know I put it in.
