    When I went with Dish in 1999, I had to buy the receiver & dish/LNB combo. Maybe Direct/Dish may have to go back to that. Buy your equipt and then no fee early termination fee. But it probably would go in today's world. But this may force Direct/Dish over to streaming only...

    DirecTV can try and blame the FCC all they want but them not being able to charge junk fees won't be their reason for raising prices, cooperate greed will be the reason. First off they are significantly more expensive than anyone else so it isn't like they were saving people money. Second, they can easily move people over to the app if cost of the equipment is so high. What this really tells me is that this was such a huge profit source for no extra work they are afraid of losing it. If it were really about recovering cost of equipment then they would charge each individual customer for that cost.

    • @GeorgeVCohea
      @GeorgeVCohea 2 місяці тому +1

      DirecTV should be exempt. The termination agreement is not junk, because its market is different and requires a totally different pricing scheme. DirecTV spaces out the installation expenses into the entire contract, and the early termination fee is a huge chunk of this. The target customer base is not likely capable of just moving to an app for television service, and the expense is worth it to many of those customers, since it is pretty much their only option for television service in their locale. Those lot do not have a Time Warner Cable, Comcast, Cox, Brighthouse Networks or any other wireline provider to offer television service. Frontloading the necessary equipment and installation expenses is not at all like having a local cable installer connecting to the neighbourhood distribution system and connecting a few cable boxes in someones house and is expensive, time consuming and requires mounting and pointing a dish, sometimes in awkward spots.
      Comparatively speaking, yes, it might be a bit profitable for DirecTV in some situations, but in others, it costs more than the contracted fee. When you factor in all of the necessary equipment that the local cable company does not have to pay, satellite television is similarly priced.

    • @kenyattaclay7666
      @kenyattaclay7666 2 місяці тому

      @@GeorgeVCohea sorry but their market isn’t any different than anyone else. As I said before, they already charge more than any other TV provider yet offer the exact same product and in some cases a lesser product for more money so whatever extra cost there is for their satellites is already baked into the price of the service.
      Also, about 5 years ago they announced that they would no longer be launching satellites & wanted to move people to that crappy box that they were trying to push on people then when that didn’t work they started allowing people to sign up for regular DirecTV but use the same app as the streaming service. This is 100% a junk fee because there is ZERO equipment cost to them for people to use the app that they can get on their own streaming device.

    • @GeorgeVCohea
      @GeorgeVCohea 2 місяці тому

      @@kenyattaclay7666
      In many rural locales, which is DirecTV’s huge market, customers almost certainly do not have access to quality Internet and likely cannot easily stream with what they can obtain. If it were only a matter of downloading an app to their streaming player, then DirecTV would not be a good choice for those lot. It is best for customers, who do not have any other television options, and for whatever reason, cannot relocate. Also, the cost of installing and pointing a dish and wiring is not baked into the price of service, DirecTV has offered a cheaper DIY installation kit for decades.
      .
      If you want to argue about pricing and the cost of satellites, then you are missing the point. Satellite television is more expensive and not desirable for anyone, who does not have to have it to receive _“cable”_ television. I wish, it weren’t the case, but too many people do not have access to better options. DirecTV, or a third party, may just have to start issuing a separate contract for installation and equipment services.

    4K on physical media looks great, although most movies in 4K are of little interest to us. 4K on streaming doesn't look all that much different than 1080p. That may be due to video compression on streaming. I wish most of the live TV stations, currently in 1080i or 720p, would transition to 1080p. That would be especially nice for sports programming.

    4k makes a big difference with larger TVs. We have 55” in BR with sitting area, a 60” older Sony in LR with HD only. We always watch on 4k TV and yet my husband says not that big a deal to him yet he only watches 4k TV. We are in late 60’s and stream only. Gave up DISH Network probably 10 -15 years ago as I was sick of their pricing changes and we of course used a DVR and couldn’t imagine watching live TV. Stream everything mainly news and how-to videos on UA-cam but also can watch from TV apps that came with LG TV. Don’t use as many movies to entertain as years ago because they are crap now! • @yourpalfranc

    I'm confused by your story on MLB. MLB has always, or at least for several years, been available stand alone through the MLB streaming app. About this time last year, MLB put access to all teams on sale for $39.95 for the remainder of the season, and I bought it. I watched every Orioles game for the rest of the season and playoffs through the MLB app on my Roku, Shield, and FireTV. So, what's different now?? Also, on the 4K issue, I'm less interested in the higher video resolution than I am having access to movies that have Dolby Atmos audio. So, I have been considering the higher Netflix tier that offers 4K and hi-res audio. Sorry for your family loss, Luke. May peace be with you and yours. ~Frank

    • @timphelps605

      Yes, you're confused. MLB Network is a TV network that's available on cable. It has games, features, movies and in studio shows. It's like ESPN with its sports programming, NFL Network with football, NBA wth basketball and NHL with hockey. The only difference is that the MLB Network only shows baseball. It has games a few times a week in addition to talk shows about baseball, including analysis and highlights. It also shows movies such as Field of Dreams.

  • @DaveNLR2
    @DaveNLR2 2 місяці тому

    That is total BS. DirecTV sends used equipment to new subs, and even those who have working dishes and own their own equipment from before AT&T bought it, are still required to commit to a contract to come back (and no longer allowed to use their owned equipment). DirecTV is flat out lying here. If they are worried, charge up front for installation for new customers, and stop requiring a contract for any upgrade or reactivation of a currently working system.

    MLB starting a streaming channel for $6/month? I live in the Angels viewing area. With the year-over-year performance of the team they'd have to pay me $6/month (maybe more!) to watch those games. Put a winning, title contending team on the field and I'd consider watching it. / On a more positive note the Angels broadcast their games on Bally sports so if Bally goes bankrupt that would be an easy decision to go on the new streaming platform.
    HD vs 4K? Its easy to tell the difference between both. I look at the price tags on both in my local retail store and HD looks great.
