    Daniel, I find it very interesting when I watch you cleaning a coin. To go from what you started to the end product is pretty neat. Some don't like it but I do.

    Q-Tips are a very important tool, which can also cut down the amount of silver dip you use. They are excellent with acetone to help remove glues as acetone alone will evaporate before the job gets done.

    Thanks Daniel. I've used Go Gone to remove tape as well. It's a petroleum distillate with a citrus additive. As long as you don't leave it on the coin for more than a minute, it's fine. Of course I would not use it on a US (or other country) minted coin. But for rounds who cares! :-)

    I set them on aluminum foil in a near boiling water with washing soda solution and let them sit. Gets rid of tarnish with no abrasion.

    • @CoinHELPu
      @CoinHELPu  Рік тому +3

      My method doesn't cause abrasions, I have multiple videos proving this. The round already had abrasions.

    • @billguthrie2218
      @billguthrie2218 Рік тому +2

      @@CoinHELPu I know. I like your method too. I just mentioned that mine also doesn't cause abrasions in case someone might wonder. . It is a chemical reaction that removes the tarnish only. It also takes off glue, but it has to set in the hot water quite a while. Your acetone method is much better for that, no doubt.

      @bussamio Рік тому +1

      Same here. Bowl lined with aluminum foil, pour in baking soda, place silver, add boiling water, let it sit for a few minutes, and rub the mix around on the coin til its clean, rinse with clean water. Shine like new.

    • @billguthrie2218
      @billguthrie2218 Рік тому +1

      @@bussamio I read some place that washing soda was better and safer than baking soda for some reason. I don't recall why.

    I must say that I did prefer the toned pre-dip coin, but I understand dipping it for demonstration purposes.

  • @wandlbaker

    The key that I always go by is, will it damage the original surface or is the original surface already compromised. If the surface is already messed up them make it look as nice as you want. If what you plan to do will damage the original surface there are still a few things to think about; Is the coin/round worth more uncleaned or not and, is the coin/round unrecognizable unless you do something. With the last one, ONE RULE - ONLY CLEAN IT ENOUGH TO IDENTIFY AND PRESERVE THEN GO NO FURTHER.

    I use the boiling water in an aluminum foil lined pan with lots of baking soda. Gets rid of the tape too. A short vinegar bath gets rid of unwanted toning.

    • @CoinHELPu

      I don’t recommend these techniques.

    • @rufferto5429
      @rufferto5429 Рік тому

      @@CoinHELPu Why? I understand not using vinegar to get rid of toning as many folks find it attractive (I don't). But what's wrong with baking soda and aluminum foil?

    Hello I'm new to the channel, my grandfather has a massive coin collection from pennies from the 1800's to buffalo nickels and beyond.
    What's the best and safest way to clean some of the dirty aged coins?
    Read not to use anything with acids and also read the professional use ultrasonic cleaners.
    Any advice would be appreciated, or a video of yours I could watch to learn.
